I'm maybe a 15ish handicap and I love my 7 wood and I don't swing to blow out veins but it goes average 180-210. As for the 3 wood, I'm tossing it to get a 5 wood. I've tried a driving iron and a hybrid and they don't have a good feel. But hey, this is just me. Thanks for the video Mr. Fryer!!!

Throw that 3 wood away. I just replaced 3 wood with 5 wood. Now I feel good out there.

THis is interesting I'm a 17 handicap and I hit my 4i good on good days but my miss is a block right and that would be the case regardless of what I use.

Rarely use a 60 degree wedge so I took out my 56 and 60 and replaced them with a 58. Added a 5 hybrid to fill that 215 yard gap. Best thing I’ve done for my game in a while.

Great upload Matt, good for thought for us to consider what’s best for the bag. Also like the reference to trading the top end for taking a wedge out for a more well rounded set up.

I have a love/hate relationship with the 5-wood. I’ll go through periods where I’m timing everything right and I get decent distance with it (around 230-235). But that solid contact comes and goes, largely because I have a hard time tracking the head of the club during my swing. I think with the larger head and longer shaft, I don’t feel it as well as I do my hybrid with its compact head. I have a 4-hybrid , and if I have a 200+ yd shot that I absolutely have to hit with confidence, I’m pulling the hybrid every time, even though it goes about 20-25 yds shorter. I’m considering ditching the 5-wood for a 3 (maybe 2) hybrid.

I have 5W and 4H. I prefer to hit hybrid. I find the 5W hard to control with the long shaft, but it’s great off the tee when I hit it well. But it’s the least used club in my bag. The most important is to find a long club that really works. For me it’s the 4H. I really like the trend with bigger hybrid heads the last few years.

Try a 2 hybrid instead of the 5wood. You can get the loft down and shorten the length of shaft without missing out of yards.

I use a 7 wood shaft on my 5 wood and that made a huge difference l. Much easier to control.

Personally, I have a 3 and a 4hybrid reason why I use them as a mid to high handicap 24 to get it down the fairway which all is all I am looking for distance I don’t have a problem with as a 3 will go about 220 and 4 about 200 but don’t get me wrong you have a good bloody point and I love watching your videos

Very interesting, thanks. I’m a 16 handicap, but about 20 years ago I was given an 18 degree Fli-Hi by someone who, funnily enough, had just replaced it with a TaylorMade hybrid. It’s been my go-to club ever since for narrow tee shots, long fairway shots and even from the semi-rough or rough (unless the ball is buried). Back then, hybrids were a new thing, and I’ve still never properly tried one.
I also carry an old TaylorMade 200 series 5-wood (small, steel head), which goes a bit further than the Fli-Hi, but I don’t always hit it so well.

Go for a fitting. I used to have a 4 hybrid I’d either thin or push right. I replaced with a 7 wood that spins more, goes the same distance and lands soft. Fitter recommended and it worked out great

I'm a 10, and match the spec in the table in the video, except I got rid of my 3w and replaced it with the 5w. My 5w and 3h are the same loft, but work in such different situations, they are very different clubs. Good video.

I've got a 3 wood, and 3 and 4 driving irons (at 19 and 21.5 degrees respectively). I've never been able to hit hybrids, and I felt like I couldn't control the 5 and 7 woods. The driving irons give me confidence when I'm looking down at them.

For those, like me, who cannot hit a wood, I humbly suggest the hi wood. Easy like a hybrid with the distance of a wood

I have 5W and 4H. 5W off the fairway for longer shots, 4H out of first cut/rough and off the tee on long Par 3's.
I also use 3W as a 'fairway finder' if the big stick isn't working or suitable.
Each to their own, but i know i have a distance gap. 5W about 220 on a good day, 4H 190-195.

I carried in my bag the hole golf carrier only one SW and instead of a LW a long iron.... A 1 iron ping eye2 for example or a bladed 2 iron which belonged to my set. In modern times you take a 20 degree 3 iron and a hybrid for shots out of the rough maybe - or a 5 wood. But always a long iron!

Firstly have some lessons and practice, once you have some consistency, know your shape and misses, a good fitting and gapping session. I did this after a medical episode that changed my ability profoundly, my handicap is again dropping toward my pre event level. The way i hit the ball is different, but i am in control

Been in and out of golf for 20+ years, I've tried and tried to get used to a hybrid but just don't get on with them, 3W is just pointless and 5/7W are a bit hit and miss, been using the Ping Crossover 3 & 4 Irons for the past couple of years and I find them great, plus I can hit very low long stingers out of the trees with them which help a lot!

    Was using: 1w, 3w, 5w, 3-9 iron, pw (46), sw (56) and a lw (60). A few years ago, got a 3h to replace both the 5w & 3 iron, and picked up a gw (52).
Sometimes, it's fun to just load up all 16 clubs! LOL

I'm surprised you didn't talk about swing speed and its impact on launch and descent angle. I feel like a lot of slower swing speed players would benefit from looking at higher lofted fairway woods. High launch/soft landing is the key if you want to stick on a green.

I did a wood fitting. I ended up with a 5w and 3hb, both 18 degrees. The 5w was flying to where the 3hb was landing. Took me a while to get use to having two clubs with the same loft not doing the same thing. I don't have a 3w. Driver, 5w, 3hb. I'm considering a 7w.

I like my fairway woods to be shallow, low profile. Gives me confidence in the fairway. I prefer a hybrid in the rough. Don't need the iron but it's fun to hit on range.

This end of the bag gapping is something I struggle with (15 handicap). Irons and woods are ok and mostly straight ball flight. Hybrids hook on me. Looking at ditching the 3 wood and finding a 7 wood to pair up with the 5 wood.

The number tables were quite interesting. I would have thought a 25 HC would hit each club farther. Like 3 wood carry 180 or 190.

Can't get on with the look of a hybrid at address, especially the weaker lofted models (tried one recently at a TayloyMade fitting). Got some new clubs on order and it will be 5i to 7w for me.

As a 45 year old male, mind you I started playing golf around 14 years old and had a golf club in my hand by age 6 or 7 I reckon, I rarely carry an iron longer than a 5 iron in my bag. All my other clubs are Driver, 3 Wood, 5 Wood, a 3 Hybrid and 4-Hybrid and the rest is shorter irons all the way down to a LW. I can hit a 2 iron, 3 iron and 4 iron just fine. However, I do agree with Matt, the versitlity of a Wood or hybrid suits my golf game better.

    Driver carries 240 ish

I got talked into using an hybrid instead of a 4 iron and I can't hit the damn thing. I hit my 3 wood pretty good off the tee maybe I should consider a 5 or 7 wood instead. If I'm striking my irons well I can hit my 4 iron good but my miss is a block and it's usually goes straight out of bounds to the right which is lethal.
