It's certainly convenient, but when given a choice, sources should still be set to the same format as the switcher to avoid conversion issues like judder or softness from scaling.
BM Studio cameras are controlled by a return SDI signal and on the television pro 4K there is a separate output for each camera. I wonder how they do that from now on? I also wonder if the now general outputs are showing up as Auxes?
Excellent overview as always Doug! Your videos have been invaluable to me since I discovered your channel a couple years ago with the production trailer build series. Cheers!
BMD has not discontinued the Production Studio 4k product line yet, so I would assume that indicates a future Constellation 4k product release. Several BMD representatives at NAB were careful to choose their words when I asked about the potential for a future 12G Constellation 4k product line.
I really wish BMD would just give us some sort of idea on their roadmaps. They just seem to be all over th board right now, with very little cohesion and organization. From a company that prides itself on innovation, we keep seeing these strange (mis)steps with recent releases. From Micro 4/3 on the studios to sdi for devices that seemingly were intended for products that use hdmi primarily, and sdi driving new HD-based traditional-style switchers. It feels so haphazard compared to the caliber of talent, experience and resources that BMD has to see such strange decisions. Maybe if they did a better job of explaining why or the direction, it would make more sense, but Grant just seems to be balancing too many plates in the air, or they frankly are not sure what direction the industry is going. I just wish they would lead out of the gate with something more befitting the BMD signature, because these just are not worthy. BMD, you are better than this mess.
They literally doing what was their original mission. Making pro tech available in a budget friendly way for average consumers. These are the perfect mixers for small churches and productions. Nobody needs 4k in that space neither for live nor streaming but the extra inputs, auxes, MEs and the fact that we no longer need a lot of supporting hardware is what we always wanted. They created the perfect mixers!!!
As much as competitors like Roland would love to have Blackmagic announce their roadmaps, that's just not happening in the tech space anymore!! Almost nobody announces their intentions anymore. Also, it's funny that you feel like BMD is all over the board. I actually think it's the exact opposite. Blackmagic WAS all over the board previously. Strange choices on headsets and lenses. Making weird choices as they tipped their toes into the broadcast market. I actually think that if you take a step back and look, Blackmagic is finally making products that fit very distinct market segments WITHOUT having much overlap, which I know brings a lot of frustration to people. Obviously, the Minis/Extremes were designed for the podcast/livestream market. These HD Constellations are obviously feeding a middle ground, as kind of an expansion of the ATEM TV Studio line (I'm assuming they heard from people who wanted more SDI inputs and more flexibility, but only needed HD - Also, I'm thinking they were having a hard time getting 4K parts during this supply chain time, so they went HD). And soon, I'm sure, they will refresh the 4K lineup. But, as a business, they seem to be doing a better job of creating products that don't devour their other product lines. Blackmagic is never going to create the perfect product for every single person. Each of their product lines serves a chunk of the market, but not the entire market. In addition, they want to sell Hyperdecks. They want to sell Web Presenters. Grant has always been about not having you pay for things that you don't need, so when people think they're going to get a switcher with a full blown built-in CG, clip player, NDI, Dante, etc. etc. etc. I wouldn't hold my breath. Much more likely that Blackmagic will make and sell separate pieces that do each of those things, so you can pay for the items that you want.
@@RyanBoni Also, you don't want to place all your eggs in the same basket with non repairable hardware. If your switcher dies you don't have to replace everything else in your ecosystem and it is cheaper to replace one specific product than one giant one that does everything. I also hope that in the future expensive switchers will be replaced by expansion cards and more repairable PCs running software.
@@GaricsPeter And, not just putting all your eggs in the same basket, but the old saying of "jack of all trades, master of none" proves true time and time again. I certainly got burned, at least twice, by the "magic $4995 all-in-one wonder boxes" early in my career: namely the Play Trinity and the first-gen Tricaster. Found out pretty quickly that they could do a lot of stuff, and none of them well. Ended up using the Trinity as a CG for a number of years and the Tricaster as a VTR playback/clip player until it bit the dust a few years later.
Why is the Multiview output still only 1080p?! It would be a real benefit to have this in 4k because most of the time you have this on a rather big screen e.g. a consumer TV with 4k resolution. Then it would perfectly fit all my HD Broadcast needs. But I really miss the 4k60p version of these models to be more future proof...
@Juri Stöckli Indeed. But if for example 20 HD Inputs is all you need, theres a huge price difference between the 2 M/E HD and the 8k :-) So I really wish they release some intermediate 4k models in the near future
2 things I am curious about, there is not an aux button on the front panel like there is on the tv studio hd rack switcher. is there an easy way to change aux output feeds from the front panel menu or is it stuck in software control? also with the new webcam outputs did they do anything to help with the colorspace issues and crushed blacks?
There aren't Auxes as such this time around -- just general-purpose outputs. If it's like the TVSHD, there will be a menu to select the sources for the various outputs.
The User Manual includes a list of what can be routed to AUX out, but multiview is not on that list. Suppose you can feed MVW SDI OUT to one of the inputs and then route it to all SDI OUTs?!
@@djp_video I am pretty late to the party, but I just purchased the ME1 Constellation, but I am not able to find the Multiview as a source. Can you tell me how can I send the MV through an output?
In HyperDeck Shuttle HD Manual.pdf there is a line at page 20: "For high quality HD recording we recommend high speed UHS-I SD cards. These cards need to be capable of write speeds above 220MB/s for recording up to Ultra HD 2160p60." Is it a typo or there will be a 4k version soon? If so then probably they'll announce more 4k devices during NAB.
Doug, Thank you for the update. The product that I have a question about is their Smartview Monitor. Is there any plans to ever offer an updated version (same bezel design as the 17") and a high quality screen.
I talked to them about that. I don't know that I can reveal all of the information that was shared, but I wouldn't count on a new version any time in the near future.
Not sure if you will see this while you are at NAB, but if it's possible, can you check to see how many DSKs are on each M/E in each of the models. Specifically, does the 4 M/E have DSK on each of it's M/Es or is it only on the first M/E?
The number of DSKs matches the number of DVEs. And I confirmed in person and with a BMD rep that the DVEs are not tied to a specific M/E, so you can use one DVE for a USK and do a DVE transition on the same M/E.
@@djp_video thank you for checking. To be clear, I'm wondering if a DSK can be used on each one of the M/E in the 4 M/E at the same time. It sounds like you are saying yes that is the case, but I want to make sure 100%. Thanks again for answering and commenting and all of the videos you make!!!
The Constellation 8k doesn't output the MV on the normal sdi outputs, so as a work around we 're entry' the 4x MV into inputs and then route it out with normal SDI outs.
Thank you very much for this recap, greatly appreciated! I currently have the TV Studio HD and the 1 M/E looks quite tempting (just got to get adapters for HDMI to SDI if so), but love that they added built in scalers and the Fairlight audio mixers like in the ATEM Mini's. If they only included like 2-3 HDMI inputs/outputs this would have been a perfect replacement for my use case to connect monitors and such.
Every HDMI added would require the removal of 2 SDIs just due to space constraints. I’d personally prefer having to use a converter or two over giving up some of the inputs or outputs.
There is only one big thing what is missing: the headphone jack for monitoring the audio. If we route the audio from main cam to atem, there is no any way to hear the signal.. just see the levels from laptop / tablet.. any tips for that?
hey Doug, i really like your videos and i am looking for a video switcher to replace my atem mini pro iso, to stream in 1080p send clips and get the Supersource. I'm wondering if it's worth buying the Atem TV Studio 4K or the Atem constellation HD 1me with a separate keyboard like Xkey ? Thanks for your content
Neither of those models have the SuperSource feature. If you want SuperSource, it is available in the ATEM Mini Extremes, 2 M/E Constellation HD, 4 M/E Constellation HD (2x SuperSource), 2 M/E Production Studio 4K, 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, and Constellation 8K (2x SuperSource).
Why the multiview is SDI when most of us will be connecting a computer or tv screen. It should be HDMI and it should be a 4k multiview so that we can see each source at a decent resolution. On the other hand, it makes sense to me that the other inputs ara HD only because HD is what everyone uses for streaming now.
SDI is just more reliable. I would rather get a converter for my monitor. My problem is that the multiview outputs are not 4K. Not a deal breaker but it would have been nice to be able to see better details in those small divided pictures.
Not quite everything. The intercom features are a touch more fleshed out on the HD version than on the 8K, and it also has the USB Webcam output. Additionally, the HD version can output the MultiView signals to any of the SDI outputs, not just the Multiview outputs. But basically the major features are all the same.
"Uhm, actually" =) The first original/classical/1.5G Atem Me1 actually had a USB 3.0 type B outlet that provided a webcamera feed. So that feature is actually not new but a welcomed return of an old one. =)
Thanks for the quick update, Doug. When talking to BMD can you find out if these mixers can trigger recording on the cameras like the Mini's do. If there is no record capacity, I suspect not, but you never know until you ask.
@@djp_video The old 4K models weren't much more expensive than these new HD offerings. If they make a 4K line of "Constellation" switchers that sits above these new HD versions, the price will be significantly more than what the older ones cost - with the only difference really being scalers and a few extra outputs.
thanks doug. So, any Idea on when we get switchers and/or mixers that can work with the network cable of the bmd studio camera pro? for a while I expected some device that could handle multiple camera's , talkback and tally over one cable.
I don't have any idea when and/or if something like that might be happening. Considering that it would only work with one specific model of BMD camera, I wouldn't hold my breath.
I suspect plugging the 10G network cables directly into any switcher won't be soon as the advertised workflow is to plug those cables into a studio converter and then into a switcher.
@@darbethbusinesstechnologya9965 well , i realize that the converters should be build in to the device. Think I as suggested, better not hold my breath:-)
I guess what's kind of underwhelming about these is that they could have been released three years ago with the original Constellation, perhaps minus the webcam USB port and at a higher price. Then again, if the 4 M/E Constellation had been around a year ago, we probably wouldn't have bought the 8K ;)
Same. Im am thankfull the constellation hd and new studio cams where not released 1.5 years ago. So we got 2 ursa broadcast (because of delays one of them is gen 2) and atem constellation 8k.
Hey Doug, I know the Constellation does not transmit audio, but does it send metadata and record/stop triggers? Thinking about getting this instead of the videohub, but if this does not allow it, I'll have to get the videohub. Thanks
The outputs of the Constellation (and all other Blackmagic switchers) include program audio and camera control (color, exposure) data. The ISO models can also send start/stop commands to connected BMD cameras when ISO recording is started on the switcher. But ancillary data and audio from cameras is discarded and not passed through to the outputs. Some of the newest models allow you to make a copy of the stereo audio from the inputs onto auxiliary audio channels of the outputs (channels 3-12, for example), but not onto channels 1/2 of the outputs. And that audio mix is the same across all outputs. The outputs of the ATEM should literally be thought of as completely new video sources. And they can be configured to show a copy of the picture data from a connected camera/source, but that's literally all you're getting from that source -- a copy of the picture. And that output will also be delayed compared to the input. And in the case of the situation where the camera's video format doesn't match the switcher's format, you're getting the converted version of that source rather than the original, with additional conversion artifacts and delay. So if your camera is set to 720p60 but the switcher is set to 1080p29.97, all of the outputs will always be 1080p29.97 -- it will be soft and half of your frames will just be discarded. It doesn't really serve as a proper video routing switcher. The outputs are effectively video sources being generated by the switcher itself, not a 1:1 copy of an input.
I saw on the website that these new Constellation HD series models can do 200/400/600 (depending on model) frame motion graphics in the media pool. If you could get a little more info on that, that would be great!
Its a step in the right direction. Will definitely be picking up a 1M/E to replace one of my TVS HD's. Hopefully, a 4K version will appear down the road as there is still need for a 1/ME 4K replacement.
How do you make the screen ( Control software) show both ME at the same time. I can only see the two tabs to show one at a time. from the manual pg.43. "The Mix Effects block of the switcher tab contains all the source select buttons for the program and preview buses, allowing external inputs or internal sources to be selected for next transition previewing or switching to air. If your switcher has 2 Mix Effects panels, you can optimize the interface to show both, or select each panel by clicking on the Mix Effects 1 or Mix Effects 2 buttons at the top of the interface. When both panels are visible, the Mix Effects 1 or 2 buttons will move to the processing palettes." Thanks a lot for your videos Doug.
@@djp_video I appreciate the reply Doug. I had it hooked to a 15" mac book pro. You'd think that'd be enough. I'll hook up something else. Thanks Again.
Thanks for explanation of new product .But I too disappointing some times about Black Magic Products such as they never comes with power on /off switch
Thanks Doug for this overview. This is what I was waiting to replace my TV Studio HD. But the lack of HDMI inputs and the fact that the Supersource function only appears with the 2/ME (function implemented on the Mini extreme, which are supposed to be the low entry compared to the Constellation, right ?...) are for me two negative points...
@@darbethbusinesstechnologya9965 I know, I have a box plenty of BMD 3G converters. But each time you need room for it, a power supply with a free outlet etc... It would have been great to have at least one or two native HDMI inputs....

the lack of HDMI inputs is a positive for me, and I plan to upgrade from TVSHD. Why? Because TVSHD has two different input ports (HDMI or SDI) so I have to arrange my setup to accomodate it (I'd prefer to have cameras on first inputs and video playbacks and computers on last ones, but the ports are the other way around. And then I have to use adapters anyway for Zoom calls because only SDIs have mix minus).
Thank you Doug. Great Infos. Since last update of Photoshop (PS-Elements 2022), it is not possible to make the BlackMagic-Plugin (for MediaPool) working. We have a open case with the BlackMagix Support and they have escalated this task to their developement crew. This was in November 2021. Since then there is no answer.... May be you can check on this, for we are shurely not the only people working with Photoshop and Atem controll Software... thank you , and have a ggod trip
Do all the panels work with the new constellations? I have the Broadcast panel, I assume it will, but could you verify if it will work with the 2M/E constellation?
Re outputs and multiview: I found the manual and there is no mention of multiview in the list of options that can be selected for each output. The explanatory text does say "includes" to hint that the list may not be exhaustive, but I think multiview would have been mentioned it was supported.
@@Juergen_Miessmer Very interesting. When I checked it at NAB Multiview 1 and Multiview 2 were definitely among the options in the Output menus, and the rep I talked to confirmed that those were available as well. Makes me wonder if there is a software version difference.
Most literature I've seen, even on Adorama and B&H, state that you can live stream with the Blackmagic Design ATEM 1 M/E Constellation via the USB-C output on the back panel. You said in your description of the unit that it does not have any internal streaming capability built in. I'm not sure what difference it makes; most live streaming needs access to the internet and you get that through a computer or something that can connect to the internet.
By built-in streaming, I mean that the switcher, by itself, can stream directly to services like RUclips. The Constellations cannot. They have a USB-C webcam output which allows you to connect them to a computer and you can stream from there. But they don’t have their own video encoder/streaming. The ATEM Minis, on the other hand, can stream directly without a computer.
Can you find out more info about the MADI workflow? It’s my understanding on the 8k that the MADI in is only 2 channels that gets applied to all outputs and there is not much flexibility in the internal routing of audio. Hopefully these models are not like that. Can flexible routing be done? ex: can MADI in channel 42 route to SDI out 7?
The "ATEM OS" (if you want to call it that) is uniform across all models, with the only difference being hardware that determines the inputs/outputs for the specific device. They have never had any kind of audio routing in the software, so it just sadly doesn't exist. And if they did update the software to accommodate that in the future, then it wouldn't be model-specific (meaning the older Constellation would get the update as well). We've asked for things like this for years and years, and they are just locked into their peculiar way of doing things, sadly.
The LiveU Solo can be used without a subscription; you just lose the bonding capability. Also look at the Pearl models from Epiphan. The generic cheapo Chinese products are complete junk and a waste of time and money. The Web Presenter isn't reliable. Teradek has discontinued the Vidiu series. We're left with fewer good options than we used to have.
Right. The only reason I'm not 100% sure is that the ATEM Mini Extremes do let you send MultiView to a general purpose output, so it's possible that they've included that functionality here. I'll found out for sure soon enough.
Thats great! I don't trust the atem mini usb-c record and i want to use atomos for this, so the sdi out is perfect! and i use liveu for streaming and that is also perfect! only thing what i am thinking the how to push the buttons.. i don't like ipad / macbook control.. maybe it is possible to control the camera inputs from Stream Deck?
I'm sure the new switchers will run the same control protocol as their existing models, so the existing Companion module for the Stream Deck will work (or possibly after some minor updates to support the new models and their unique capabilities).
Using the third party Companion app, this should totally be possible. We do it with our current ATEM switchers. Probably not quite as rock-solid reliable as an official Blackmagic control surface, but for less-than-mission-critical applications (which is exactly what these new switchers are aimed at) it should work great. Companion has come a long way in terms of stability since Doug reviewed it a while ago.
Companion reliability is greatly determined by which devices you connect to. The HyperDeck module, for example, is still problematic. The ATEM module is pretty robust, though.
@@djp_video Thanks, great! I just order my unit. Not so much info about the PIP.. is the PIP size 100% controlled if we use a speaker and powerpoint, it is possible to adjust 70-30% but let's hope that is a possible.
:) i hit u up on insta when I saw the new release, I was excited as well until i notice after all this waiting no 4k, i personally don't think they will hurry with a 4k model because they do want users spend 10k for the 8k model lol . But also they do listen to their users so based on that maybe they will give a 4k model
Considering that there's Studio Cameras with 4K and a 4K Web Presenter, it would be highly surprising if they didn't also release a Contellation 4K model line to fit in between those two ends. NAB isn't over yet... 😉 If there's also a 4K line up, the HD models wouldn't have gotten any attention if the 4K ones were released first.
Great deal, if 4K is not needed: A 2 M/E for less price than the former 1M/E. And maybe a solution to use older 1080i cams at 1080p productions, if the deinterlacing works fine. Does it? I'm only asking myself why they put it in a 1U case. 2U would have gave much better access to the connectors. I assume when running productions with 20 sources there is not that much need to save rackspace .
I won't know the answers to most of those questions until I get my hands on one for myself. For most of us, rack space is limited. Having a unit that only occupies 1U instead of 2U is glorious!
@@djp_video Thanks for reply. Maybe you have smaller hands/fingers than me.....i dont feel comfortable unpluging the bnc connectors. Neutrik reartwist helps a bit, but more space would be the better solution. If you've seen it on NAB: What about the noise? Former 1M/E has very noisy fans...
That's why we invest in BNC installation tools. They make the job far easier. amzn.to/3ME63Gj In terms of noise, the NAB show floor was too loud for me to make a good assessment. I'll have to wait until I have one in my possession.
You're not the only one. I've heard that from a lot of people. I'm sure we'll get new 4K models at some point... it's just a question of how long we have to wait.
@@djp_video Yeah, the mini extremes look promising. Instead of SDI I could run Cat over long distance and convert that way. Its just crazy to see them release a new product with great things like scaling but Lower quality inputs.
Yep, these are good steps forward for BMD and customers using SDI. They retain the need to continue to buy the outboard encoders and recorders, while also making MADI available, and supersource to a much wider number of people. Yeah, these are HD max resolution, so it will be interesting to see what happens in the 4K space. I wonder if, with the 23 video outputs and MADI whether you can avoid buying a videohub for those that want ISO recordings of inputs *with their own audio* - and not just program audio?
The SDI outputs always include program audio and timecode. They don't pass through those from the source, and it is run through the scaler/frame rate converter as well.
We use the BMD Audio to SDI 4K converter devices to embed externally mixed (ie round tripped) MADI audio back to sdi before hitting the hyperdecks. This works very well and audio is now all in sync saving much time in post if edit is required.
@@djp_video Yeah, I suppose that's their way of creating the situation of needing to have a videohub in order to get ISO recordings of inputs (with their own audio).
Hi Doug .. you are really quick .. I will stick with the 2 M/E .. along with the Webpresenter and Hyperdeck I already have .. like you said lelay on Hardware .. and to get some HDMI in some Mini Convertrer are come in very handy ..
Not as quick as it could have been. I shot this video 3 hours ago, editing only took about 30 minutes, and then it took RUclips close to an hour to receive and process the upload.
Good video. But I think there's no need to make comparisons with the ATEM Mini line of switchers. The constellation obviously was made for different use cases a has much more professional features you can't find in the ATEM Mini. For my kind of live productions for sports, I find the constellation perfect.
For people who have the ATEM Mini and are looking to upgrade to something higher end, it's probably going to be important to them to know what features they are gaining vs what they are losing.
What a wasted opportunity to create something truly groundbreaking 😔. There were so many things they could and should've done differently that make this release a really sad one.
Like an atem 4K with video over ip. Broadcast fiber converter, studio cam and ip video converter all use 1/10gbs ethernet, why go back to sdi to feed the atem?
Looking ahead to an average 5-6 5 years' use, 4K would be the only choice. Blackmagic also need to embrace NDI. We switched from Blackmagic Television Studio Pro 4K to vMix 4K in a high-spec PC. So much better. Hugely, hugely versatile.
We started doing shows with remote guests and custom layouts over the last couple of years, largely out of necessity due to Covid. Trying to get a panel with five or six boxes on the ATEM is a CHORE (you have to put a supersource inside another supersource - assuming you even have two available). In vMix, it's literally just a few clicks and you have a custom input... and you can make as many of those as you want! I used to really resist software solutions (I hated the Tricaster), but there's just no denying how much more versatile they have become. To me, Blackmagic is no longer very competitive unless you only ever switch fullscreen sources and don't have to play back other media/content during a show.
Software is more versatile, but I wouldn't rely on it for a high profile event. Or for an event that requires 10 or more video sources, which we do quite regularity. And certainly never if IMAG is part of the deal -- hardware switchers have far lower latency and that makes them much more suitable in that case.
@@djp_video You just have to learn the quirks. For example, if you use one of your graphics cards outputs instead of one in your capture card, latency is almost zero. In cases where we stream, it's a non-issue. In cases where we have to feed IMAG, we go that route. As for reliability, I've had ATEM units overheat (even when in an actively cooled rack), so they aren't bulletproof. You can feed way more video sources on a beefy vMix rig than an ATEM (thanks especially to an actually usable media pool). You're right that you'd be hard pressed to get 40 camera inputs in - but I almost never do shows with more than 10 or 11 cameras. Sources, yes, but not cameras. I'm not here to convince you of anything... there are plenty of choices and you find what works best for you. I have a TON of Blackmagic gear, so I'm not trashing the company. But I think anyone looking at this line of switchers - basically a sidegrade to their line that came out over NINE years ago - and is getting excited about an update that essentially amounts to scalers and a few more outputs - is looking through super biased glasses. This update is about as vanilla as it could possibly get. The ATEM line still holds a lot of DNA from the old Echolab line, and it seems they are having difficulty pushing beyond it. Maybe they are locked into a system that would require a complete rewrite to add some of the things I've mentioned. I really don't know. I've outgrown them, and this NAB was the last breath I was holding for them to release something that WOWed. For the company who pushed 6G and 12G into the market when everyone else scoffed at the concept, a couple of 1080p switchers in new black paint aren't very wow.
@@juri14111996 Obviously you convert it at the source, just like you'll most likely be converting your multiview output. There's also an option to suppress all notifcations + restrict the cursor so the issues you mentioned do not occur. You definitely don't have to use a software switcher - they are just another option. But unless you are running multiple machines and spending multiple times the investment, you will be vastly limited by the hardware option. That is all I was presenting.
As a 4 ME user THIS IS THE BEST PRODUCT OF BMD EVER! I don't care at all for 4K. Has no use in live production and nobody streams in 4k. This model is half the price and every feature is better: - 40 input instead of 20 -24 AUX instead of 6 - 4 DVE instead of 1 - 2 super source instead of 1 - 4 customizable multiview instead of 2 kinda locked - all inputs are format converted - USB output There is no longer need for and SDI capture card, updown scalers, and a videohub sparing another $1000.
@@djp_video Good to know. I wouldn't use the webcam option anyway. USB-C connectors are just too fragile. I hate that they created something that should be the de facto connector for everything and it is so easy to brake. Type-A and Type-B should have stayed in use for products where space is not a problem.
For live 1080p is fine, 4k projector are to expensive. But for livestreaming i dont see a reason to stay at 1080p, bandwith for 4k streaming is no big deal, 4k tv at home are a normal thing.
Did you just do a The Force trick on us with your hand wave and saying: "These are not the switchers you're looking for" ? 17:43 Hahahaha. I now have the feeling these aren't the switchers I am looking for.
They serve a different audience. I think they did pretty well with these for the most part. Trying to include isolated recordings for 10, 20, or especially 40 sources is... impractical. And the RTMP encoders in the ATEMs are pretty mediocre anyway so I personally don't use them. So if they included those features they'd be wasted on someone like me.
@@djp_video too bad this means decent harware ndi/hybrid mixer still seems to be nonexixtent. Another deal maker would have been dabte/avb built in. Tricasters are just too much for small level operations
2 года назад
@@TimoSund ATEM (and most other sdi-based switchers) are frame locked devices. The only way to add these high level protocols is to have full protocol converters installed at inputs. Which would probably be more cumbersome / expensive than just having them outside.
The fact that there's still no proper media pool in these things at this point is a joke. You can't even play back a simple video file without some other external solution. That alone should be a disqualifier in 2022. The supersource is limited and clunky, there's still no proper audio routing or delay, and they got rid of the HDMI multiview output, meaning you either need a more expensive SDI monitor or another converter just to preview. And of course they eliminated 4K! Blackmagic - the champion of "12G everywhere!" The scalers are nice and the price is great but if this is the best they can do to replace the super aging 4K line, they're in trouble.
@@djp_video Well the 4K line is over 9 years old at this point, so if these aren't replacing them, they still have a major problem. And the rest of the comments apply to all BMD switchers - they haven't updated the software at all, and that is where they are really starting to lag behind.
I agree, the I/O on many of their products isn't consistent or entirely logical (IMO) and the software isn't moving forward, regards modern media pool, UI design and workflow. They do the job and fit their niche, but not moving forward in major steps with each generation.
There are even no cameras included, no monitors, no cabling and at least they do not deliver the creatives to operate the production....... .....joking off.... What do you expect? It's a pretty cheap versatile switcher, not a complete production setup. It meets the needs of many users. I'm shure they will sell a lot of them. If it doesn't meet your needs, look for another one.
Including scalers on inputs/outputs is a big step up, from the original HD versions. That's fantastic.
What is a scaler? ☺️
@@housepandacrew581 Explained at 14:45.
Agreed! Not having scalers has been the biggest pain in the butt for BMD switchers over the last many years.
I have the same question. I could imagine that every output has the camera control information embedded.
I’m sure that every output contains camera control data.
every output has the camera control information and it also works over sdi splitters
The cam controll data and intercom for any cam is on any output, probably even on multiview.
Great info. Any word on when the ATEM Constellation 4K is coming?
I have no inside information.
Couldn't describe it with better words. Absolutely on point. I do not understand these weird moves from blackmagic...
Atem constelation 8k does this perfect.
This is almost exactly what I wanted for my next switcher. I just with that is used XLR instead of 1/4 inch for audio
All you need is an adapter cable. The signals are the same.
The User Manual includes a list of what can be routed to AUX out, but multiview is not on that list. Suppose you can feed MVW SDI OUT to one of the inputs and then route it to all SDI OUTs?!
I verified on a unit in the show floor that Multiview indeed IS a source that you can choose for the general purpose outputs.
@@djp_video Super! thanks for checking
@@djp_video I am pretty late to the party, but I just purchased the ME1 Constellation, but I am not able to find the Multiview as a source. Can you tell me how can I send the MV through an output?
@@chazzic1 If you want to be able to do that, you have to connect the Multiview output(s) back to one of the switcher inputs, unfortunately.
In HyperDeck Shuttle HD Manual.pdf there is a line at page 20:
"For high quality HD recording we recommend high speed UHS-I SD cards. These cards need to be capable of write speeds above 220MB/s for recording up to Ultra HD 2160p60."
Is it a typo or there will be a 4k version soon?
If so then probably they'll announce more 4k devices during NAB.
Likely just a remnant of copying and pasting from another HyperDeck product.
I confirmed yesterday that these new models do make the MultiViewers available for the main SDI outputs
@@djp_video I'd expect the 8K will have that in a firmware upgrade
I do the same. Only problem is if we do a 1080p show, multiview trough cam in will be downscalled to 1080p to.

Question for BMD folks at NAB: Are there any plans to update the ATEM Camera Converters to at least 6G?
Haha. I’ve asked so many times. But I’ll try again.
LOL dream on. We're lucky they still sell them. :(
@@daltonrandall4348 Shhh... don't give 'em any ideas.
“It is low on the list of priorities”
6G? Isent broadcast 50 or 60 fps?
Or does your audience only use laser projectors, crt and oled?
Thank you very much for this recap, greatly appreciated! I currently have the TV Studio HD and the 1 M/E looks quite tempting (just got to get adapters for HDMI to SDI if so), but love that they added built in scalers and the Fairlight audio mixers like in the ATEM Mini's. If they only included like 2-3 HDMI inputs/outputs this would have been a perfect replacement for my use case to connect monitors and such.
I'm fine with SDI only but I miss 4k for the multiviews.
Every HDMI added would require the removal of 2 SDIs just due to space constraints. I’d personally prefer having to use a converter or two over giving up some of the inputs or outputs.
@@djp_video to be fair, and hdmi input can replace up to 2 sdi ports, if you whould use seperate outputs for each cam return.
@@juri14111996 But you'd still be losing functionality. Cameras connected via HDMI don't get return video like you would get with SDI.

They’d have to give up something else since HDMI connectors take approximately twice as much space as SDI.
I would assume that they aim it at their own rack mount monitors that have the SDI input.
@@Volleykanalen but they are too small for multiview! Multiview monitors are LCD of 50" or above
SDI is just more reliable. I would rather get a converter for my monitor. My problem is that the multiview outputs are not 4K. Not a deal breaker but it would have been nice to be able to see better details in those small divided pictures.
HDMI is bad for long cable runs and well known for many problems.
When you get to test it, check the media pool. What formats does it support for the animations.
I’d bet it is the same as we’ve seen before… TGA, PNG, JPEG image sequences
Hi, The only difference between the 4M/E and the 8K is that?, the resolution? Everything else is the same?
Not quite everything. The intercom features are a touch more fleshed out on the HD version than on the 8K, and it also has the USB Webcam output. Additionally, the HD version can output the MultiView signals to any of the SDI outputs, not just the Multiview outputs. But basically the major features are all the same.
@@djp_video cool! Thanks Doug!
"Uhm, actually" =) The first original/classical/1.5G Atem Me1 actually had a USB 3.0 type B outlet that provided a webcamera feed. So that feature is actually not new but a welcomed return of an old one. =)
True.
I never understood why they removed it on all the newer devices.
Is it usb 3 uncompressed?
I guess its only usb 2 mjpeg compressed, like on the new hyperdecks.
@@Juergen_Miessmer I believe it is compressed like their HyperDeck, ATEM, and Web Presenter products.

When talking to BMD can you find out if these mixers can trigger recording on the cameras like the Mini's do. If there is no record capacity, I suspect not, but you never know until you ask.
I guess not, but Middle Things has a free software (middle control) that can trigger recordings on BMD cameras via any ATEM.
$10k for the Constellation 8k is still a MASSIVE deal. They have no competition at all in that space. It also works great in 4k.
Yes, but Constellation 4k 1 M/E and 2 M/E, as equivalent to the HD models, but using 12G-SDI or even 6G-SDI would still have been a nice addition
Without a doubt. But the price gap between the new 4 M/E and 8K models is huge. There’s room for something in between
@@djp_video The old 4K models weren't much more expensive than these new HD offerings.
@@djp_video it can work with the fiber converter for the ursa to, the studio converter even has an sfp+ port, reserved for future use.
Why do you think BMD didn’t add streaming and recording to these new models?
Likely because most of their target customers for this product would use their own separate, more capable encoders and recorders anyway
streaming and recording is not "missing", is just a very nice addon on the atem mini.
That’s what I read on the tech specs and in the manual as well
Its a step in the right direction. Will definitely be picking up a 1M/E to replace one of my TVS HD's. Hopefully, a 4K version will appear down the road as there is still need for a 1/ME 4K replacement.
Yes.. the HDMI and converter time is over now
How do you make the screen ( Control software) show both ME at the same time.
When both panels are visible, the Mix Effects 1 or 2 buttons will move to the processing palettes."

@@darbethbusinesstechnologya9965 I know, I have a box plenty of BMD 3G converters. But each time you need room for it, a power supply with a free outlet etc... It would have been great to have at least one or two native HDMI inputs....

The best overview available!
Do you know if the USB webcam output can be assigned from any of the M/Es on the 2 larger models?
I don't know. I'd suspect not, but I'll know for sure when I get one in.
There is no option on the 2M/E to route a signal to the USB. So it seems to be hardwired to ME1.
Hi, can you control the outputs using the 1me Panel?
In what way? Selecting sources for them? Yes.
10 inputs and 6 AUX outputs is nice - I’m curious if it works with video hub software 🙂
Probably. The ATEM Minis do.
40 input and 24 auxes on the 4 ME compared to the 4k version for half the price is INSANE!
Ask the for a URSA Broadcast G2 for you to review!
I doubt it will offer full routing, but I can ask.
Hey Doug,
Can you please share your recommendation for a hardware encoder that does not have a subscription fee?
The LiveU Solo can be used without a subscription; you just lose the bonding capability. Also look at the Pearl models from Epiphan.
The generic cheapo Chinese products are complete junk and a waste of time and money. The Web Presenter isn't reliable. Teradek has discontinued the Vidiu series. We're left with fewer good options than we used to have.
I have Used Constellation 8K before. I don't believe that you can route multiviews to general outs. FYI
These can be controlled from the same tools as the other ATEM switchers, including BitFocus Companion with the Stream Deck.

It just happened. I started doing video as a hobby and it got to the point where people started hiring me.

According to the tech specs on BMD's site, it should.

BMD also likes to come out with new products near the end of the year.
The have a constellation 4K. Its just called 8k, but in 8k mode its only 10 inputs, 5 outputs.
Will these work with an external BMD control surface?
Yes.

A 2 M/E for less price than the former 1M/E.

At minute 2:50 ruclips.net/video/XhMpdRW1r0Y/видео.html
My unit is now waiting in post.. i will pick it up in morning... intresting
My only complaint is that they should have been able to use 4k
I suspect that is still coming in future products.
I don't like that it is only 3g SDI. That makes me steer towards the older models. :/
@@pbelb More likely because it makes it much easier to sync in editing and reduces the complexity of signal routing in the switcher.
5:10 Intercom is stereo with balanced mic, so 6 conductors, 5pin + the body ot the connector.
Hello Juri, do you know the pinout of the 5pin xlr connector ?
Hi Doug .. you are really quick ..
@@djp_video .. have much fun at NAB .. greetings to all ..
Great info Doug!
@@daltonrandall4348 using gpu outputs is a no go for me. Its only hdmi or dp, you can get notifications, other programs, the cursor, ... to show up.
That is all I was presenting.
will black magic make a 4k atem mini?
There’s no way to know. But I wouldn’t bet on it.
Hi Doug, ready to go to NAB? Me too
Most certainly.
NAB 2023 this April…. Awww man…. Constellation 4K - scared that they might lower prices for Constellation Hd 😅
When they release 4K versions they'll be in addition to the HD models, not replacing them. Your investment isn't in jeopardy.
As a 4 ME user THIS IS THE BEST PRODUCT OF BMD EVER!
I don't care at all for 4K. Has no use in live production and nobody streams in 4k. This model is half the price and every feature is better:
- 40 input instead of 20
-24 AUX instead of 6
- 4 DVE instead of 1
- 2 super source instead of 1
- 4 customizable multiview instead of 2 kinda locked
- all inputs are format converted
- USB output
There is no longer need for and SDI capture card, updown scalers, and a videohub sparing another $1000.
I own a tv studio on these models what surface do you use to switch?
@@Nujola The Software Controll on a Linux PC with its keyboard. It is perfectly fine for our use-case.
The USB feed is noticeably lower quality than you’d get with a DeckLink or UltraStudio
But for livestreaming i dont see a reason to stay at 1080p, bandwith for 4k streaming is no big deal, 4k tv at home are a normal thing.
i really start hating bmd.
Did you just do a The Force trick on us with your hand wave and saying: "These are not the switchers you're looking for" ? 17:43 Hahahaha. I now have the feeling these aren't the switchers I am looking for.
Winner winner! You’re the first to comment on it
@@djp_video Thank you. I can "Move along..move along..." now :) .... and I am so happy with my Atem Mini Extreme Iso which I ugraded to last week :)
Bit of a strange mix now - Atem Mini range has some great features but also limited with I/O
Don’t see how 1 M/E is upgrade to AMP. Suppose it adds inputs to to the AMP instead
More inputs and SDI rather than having to struggle with HDMI. Many of us are very grateful for that alone.
These models are flops. They should have made the ATEM mini extreme iso a rack mount version with XLR inputs.
And ditch the hdmi for sdi.
if it'd support NDI it´d be real deal.
Considering that BMD would have to give NewTek a pile of money to use it, I don’t see it happening.
@@djp_video too bad this means decent harware ndi/hybrid mixer still seems to be nonexixtent. Another deal maker would have been dabte/avb built in. Tricasters are just too much for small level operations
@@TimoSund ATEM (and most other sdi-based switchers) are frame locked devices. The only way to add these high level protocols is to have full protocol converters installed at inputs. Which would probably be more cumbersome / expensive than just having them outside.
@ yes. Started to plan rackmounted unit. Costs too much.
This clearly isn’t meant to replace the 4K line
@@Juergen_Miessmer I expect a $100 nvme drive inside so the switcher can be useful.
