Dear John! I am so happy I came here to listen to you! Brilliant and breathtaking! Why play classical music when you can play this? :-) Absolutely great,my friend! When I was young, Phillip John Lee was my hero and you remind me of his playing here! Thank you!

This piece of mine seems to be quite popular with people. It's called Cassiopeia and is a flamenco form called Solea por Bulerias. Cassiopeia was a ill-fated vain Queen in Greek Mythology and the astronomical constellation named after her was my favourite constellation as a child (mostly because it was a great reference point to find other more interesting night sky objects).
When I finished writing the piece, I happened to be outside looking skyward and it being early November, Cassiopeia was very high and obvious in the sky so I took the lazy route and named the piece after her.
I added the little (sort of) major-key section at the end on the day of recording it, as all the reminiscing had put me in a nostalgic, possibly childish mood. :D
    Rant over, Enjoy I hope

This is hypnotising. I'm very happy with the direction I took in guitar playing, but I simply can't fathom real classical style.

John Walsh Guitar That was stunning!!! I have loved flamenco for over 20 years and have never heard it played like this. I could sense an almost Celtic tone in certain places. Where are you from? Amazing playing, amazing composition.

Danofstockport Many thanks man. Much appreciated! I am from Ireland and I live in Dublin. Every few months I am in Manchester to give a weekend of flamenco guitar workshops. There is a nice flamenco scene there. Many thanks again.

John Walsh Guitar Ahh, I have just looked and found you mentioned in the "Flamenco at POD" :-) I may pop down but it's tricky because I run my exercise Boot Camps most evenings :-( Also, my guitar playing is crappy at the moment ha ha ha. Thanks for replying John (I see now where the Celtic sounds come from)

I told probably two dozen people about flametal when I was younger.
It turned out that Ben and I had a lot in common. Metal guys who discovered flamenco and loved it, but just weren't that great at it, and gravitated toward 4/4 stuff a little bit lol.
I don't know if he would have laughed at that, or taken it as an insult, but I always felt like we were comically similar on some levels.
We both played metal on nylon string guitars initially, both from Seattle; both hung out at the same guitar shop (but never at the same time); and we each independently arrived at the same cheat-picado technique (that I believe he called 'alternail') where you use your i finger as a pick, as if you were alternate picking on an electric (because our picado wasn't that great). I'm guessing he, too, wished he'd gotten an earlier start with flamenco.
That video he uploaded where he was walking around his house, unable to sit down, and asking for people to send good vibes his way as a last ditch effort to stay alive really bothered me. I still think about that on a weekly basis, and count myself as fortunate for what health I do have remaining. Every time I think about my own mortality, Ben woods crosses my mind.
RIP, brotha. Hopefully wherever you are, the seats aren't all taken. That'd be just your luck.

it is one of my favorite pieces, and if i had the notes, i would recommend it as an method for solea por buleria, full harmonically , warm for the ears, and soft playing ( not agressive )

Wow John...I've been a lover of flamenco for 18 years now. Its tough to describe your Solea Por Bulerias....besides being excellent, I'd have to say that it sounds both rooted in tradition but has a feel not flamenco-like....i cant put my finger on it. Like flamenco techniques and compas with a American country-western flavor??? I dont know why im having that feel but it does speak to the uniqueness of your interpretation........familiar yet totally new. Thanks!!

John, Que maravilla, a gorgeous composition, and some of the best playing imaginable. And thank you for such a pristine recording that makes us feel like we're right there. The sonorities are rich and unexpected voicings - you treat that tuning so well, it's fresh and still muy flamenco.

Still impressed by this song years after first time I've listened to it.
You have a pure flamenco techniques but there is something different in your music and it is definitely not Spanish. It's the reason why this piece of art is so special.
I had a Spanish long time friend hear it two days ago and he was like : "...." he was just speechless. And so was I again...
Each time I hear it, it brings me beyond myself. Thanks John.

Unique style, to be sure. A couple parts reminded me of jeronimo maya's 'tangos a lucas,' (the tuning in conjunction with the hammer-on/pull-off stuff on the bass strings). Your song may have come first, I'm not sure.
In any case, it's great. The song, the playing, the recording. Well done.

Oh John...you are Irish!? I missed that. Now it makes sense to me why I get a feel of American country-western or American Southwestern feel. Its because a great deal of folk and country western/Americana music is really rooted in Irish folk music. Dont know if there was any intent in your part at all but i think its great that you can play a great Flamenco piece and sound authentic to the compas and technique yet have a certain flavor come out that is different and yet it all works well.
