    The 5x14 Classic immediately jumped out at me as the 'right' drum in this mix..... Few of the others had nice elements, but overall the Classic checked the boxes best for each part of the tune; fills, backbeats, interplay with toms. 👌🏿

      Of this bunch it's my favorite too. It's also very comfortable to play. Thanks for watching!

    The Yamaha 6.5 x 14" steel snare sounded really good for the 1980's hard rock sound - minus the gated reverb. Sounded the most balanced within the mix.

      I love how everyone has a different take and taste. That one was little to thick for me but does sound good. Now I want to try it with the gated reverb with that snare! Thank you for watching and commenting!

      That is the one I used for a recording and we and Charlie loved how it sounded for the sound. I ended up buying one after that!

    What a nice video! I’ve been wanting to hear how snares compare in a mix! Thank you! Question: what was the tension on the top heads? I thought the black beauty was gonna smoke all the others but not quite, that classic maple sounded so good! And the piccolo too!

    Dude my wife got tired of watching me spend 2 hours a week dusting the entire studio, so she bought me a couple feather dusters and it get's it spotless in a few minutes. I use them on all the gear including drum kits.

      Lol!! I have one of those somewhere in the back room. I guess I actually have to use it though...

    So the Supraphonic seemed to have all the punch you would want in that scenario, but it also got out of the way allowing the guitars and bass to take up more space filling out the sound nicely.
    Edit: So many of the snares sound good without question, but I notice some of the snares are pushing the drums forward. For example the Yamaha Steel sounds like it would be perfect in this setting if you were looking for a spot to feature the drums in a fill/solo context. But it seemed like it absorbed too much space for an entire song. And the Black Beauty just turned the whole song into an epic overture.

      Nice detailed observations! I didn't quite like the Supraphonic on this track as much as I thought I would. I agree with you that it's punchy and gets out of the way of the guitars but it ate into the bass a little too much for me. Of course I could have "mixed" differently but that is not the point of the video. Interesting what you say about the Yamaha because I think the same thing too. It's probably all the dust making it sound so thick. lol! Thank you for watching and commenting!

      @@Ultimatestudiosinc I'm a guitarist by professional trade in my neck of the studio industry. Making guitars sound that huge just by swapping out a snare is insane to me. Sure there is always give and take in audio. It could just be me, but the mix with the Supraphonic was great, because the guitars, bass, and snare could literally be felt in the gut through my monitors.

    The only one I didn’t care for was the Supraphonic with all the muffling. Tracks like this I think require more opened yet slightly dampened cracky snares.

    An interesting thing, I noticed In this video, was that each snare sounded so different in isolation but once mixed in with the music, the differences were reduced somewhat..!🤔

    • @Ultimatestudiosinc
      @Ultimatestudiosinc  2 года назад

      Great observation!! On a couple of them the difference was reduced quite a bit. Honestly I was a little shocked at how much that happened. I knew they would be perceived differently once there was context but not quite this much. Thanks for watching and commenting!!

    The 14x8 is the only one that sounded good with or without music. Didn't care for the tuning on the other snares, especially that Supraphonic.

    Anyone else besides me evolve over time from having a few snares that got tuned differently, to eventually having a big collection of snares with each of them just tuned/outfitted/muffled for a particular kind of sound? It does make for effective and more clear-cut shootouts because you can get in the ballpark quickly and then fine tune as needed.

    • @Ultimatestudiosinc
      @Ultimatestudiosinc  2 года назад +1

      That's pretty much what I do now. I never take the gaff/paper towels off the Supraphonic. It's set up for that sound and if we don't like it then we pick another snare. I completely agree with it helping to get in the ballpark quicker. I also find that a lot of the artists that I'm working with LOVE testing out the snares to see how they sound.

    Annndddd this is why the black beauty is king in the studio. Maybe not the best for every song but it's always solid. I felt the classic maple drove the band best

    When I'm producing I always ask the drummer to bring more than one snare, hats and Ride. Hats sounds changes a lot the interaction with rhytm guitars and how the groove subdivisions cuts on the song.

      Agreed! Changing one (or more) of those elements can completely change how the entire kit sits with the music. That's why I have bags full of cymbals too. You never know what will work best. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Don't like most snares, usually overpowering. For some reason most mixers make the drums the main Instrument and unless you're Buddy Rich or Gene Krupa they shouldn't (no offense Charlie)
    Over all I like the classic maple that came with the kit. Sound like it part of the overall sound of the kit and not a "separate" instrument.

      No offense taken! Those are two of the best drummers of all time. Though stylistically completely different than what I'm covering in this video so probably not the reference I would use but I get your sentiment. And I too like the Classic Maple the best. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it!
