    Thank you very much for your video. I've been trying to figure out for a while now if the power draw of a proper air conditioning unit could be balanced by solar. My plan is for a lot of solar and a lot of insulation. So you've now shown me that this equation would balance nicely. I'd probably look to install the external unit underneath the vehicle in a cooler, shaded spot.

    excellent video as always! the thermal covers for the skylight is just what we were looking for. Also good for winter I am sure? We're thinking about Niteair for our maxair fans - would be interesting to see your thoughts on those products. If you need them of course!

      Thanks, glad it’s helpful.
      Yeah good point in winter they would add extra insulation from the cold too.
      I’ve not heard of the NiteAir but will take a look at it.

      @@ExploreVanUK one other question - we have a sprinter conversion with nice glass sliding windows. So I can't see how the to get the aircon to work :( Looks great though and the price is reasonable.

      @jamieh2239 hi, I have seen examples of it used with sliding windows with a bit of DIY.
      You can see an example on their site here.

    The Wave 2 doesn't have to be inside the van. It can be run outside with the cool air directed into the van via the supplied duct, thereby doing away with the noise and any heat generated by the unit.

    • @ExploreVanUK
      @ExploreVanUK  День назад

      This is true but there are significant pitfalls to doing this that potentially are worse than running it inside and putting up with the noise and heat inside.
      The Wave Instructions say that it shouldn’t be used in direct sunlight, so it would need to be shaded.
      The uninsulated cool air duct would be partially outside in the heat so the cooled air will be warmed before it gets inside and therefore the AC will use more power than if used inside.
      If the cool air is routed into the van the wave would be constantly trying to cool hot air from outside the van eg 40 degree heat. Rather than recirculating and further cooling the air from inside the van as it cools. This would make it very inefficient.
      It’s only rated to IPX4 so would be risky to be left out if there was any risk of rain or dust.
      Im not sure anyone would want to leave £800s worth (£1,150 with battery) of equipment outside that could easily be picked up. (Eg we often leave the Eurom running when we are away from the van keeping it cool, or over night while we sleep, I wouldn’t risk that with the Wave left outside.)
      The hassle of putting out and connecting it up when you want to use it rather than just pressing the on button if it were inside or on the Eurom.
      Plus all the noise outside risks your neighbours not being very happy.
      I’d also be interested to understand how the unit would know the temperature inside the van to be able to switch the cooling off when the required temperature is reached if the unit is outside? So wouldn’t it run continuously so potentially use power unnecessarily? I don’t think it has a remote temperature sensor.

      @@ExploreVanUK To be fair, I run mine inside the van, behind a thermal curtain. The noise doesn't bother me as I don't find it particularly loud. I have run it with the back end out of the window, but it's a bit of a faff setting up a stable support and sealing the gaps. Something I shall address on building my next van.
      I also have insulated the ducts to help prevent heat loss and ingress, which isn't entirely ideal that you have to make such modifications to improve the efficiency.
      I do believe you can get a sensor to measure inside temp and a waterproof carry bag to protect the unit from dust and rain. But again, not ideal after spending so much already.
      All in all though, for me it works, as I can easily move it into any vehicle, which comes in handy in my work van or even in the house.

    You didn't include any floor or roof mounted systems such as those from Truma in your table, any reason why when they're designed for Campervans?

    • @ExploreVanUK
      @ExploreVanUK  3 дня назад

      Good point. We didn’t look at permanently fitted options for 3 reasons.
      1. Price
      2. You have the extra weight on the van even for trips where aircon isn’t necessary (Spring, Autumn, Winter) so it uses valuable payload all the time.
      3. Difficult to move between vans.
      We also use the cool my camper in the house in summer which we couldn’t do with a permanently fitted solution.

    So these guys are unloading stock already illegal in the US and the EU and soon to be banned in the UK? R134a Aircon Gas
    At one time, all cars used the same refrigerant gas, known as R134a. However, it was discovered to have a high Global Warming Potential (GWP) rating, so in 2011, the EU banned R134a refrigerant gas from being used in the AC systems of new cars, and it is now being phased out globally. R134a systems operate at higher discharge-side pressures than R12, which can cause compressor seals to leak. Bottom line, R134a simply doesn't cool as well as R12. In addition, there was the lubricant issue. Because A/C compressors have moving parts, they require oil.

    • @ExploreVanUK
      @ExploreVanUK  3 дня назад

      Not something I know about but as the manufacturer lists two models the AC2401 with R134a refrigerant and the AC2401E with R290 if it’s important to you I am sure Cool My Camper will confirm which model they use.
      As ours came from the EU I can only presume it’s an AC2401E if R134A is banned there.
      I see the Zero Breeze Mk1 and Mk2 also uses R134A refrigerant.
      The Ecoflow Wave uses R290
      And I can’t see any on Amazon that actually say what they have so who knows what’s in them.
      I’d suspect any ban relates to manufacture rather than sale so it’s not really offloading as the stock would never become obsolete.

      Not sure the point you’re trying to make?
      The video is marked as “Paid Promotion” as RUclips T&Cs and UK Law require to reflect that cool my camper gave me the bag to test, we’ve not received any payment for making the video.
      We purchased the Eurom AC2401 ourselves.
      Whilst we do sometimes make commission from sales that’s not the case with Cool My Camper.

      It’s very important to us that we stay independent and any reviews we do are a true reflection of our experience of the product. The supplier have no editorial control over the content of the video.

      Where companies are happy to provide products on these terms, I’m happy to review, I always disclose in the video the circumstances so that it is clear to viewers.
