I was not familiar with Walter Davis until this pressing. I think it sounds great and hate to admit that until your review I was not aware of the print in the other section. LOL. I am a very happy member of the TPS!
I loved this title as well as the TP titles for January. I do wish they got the shipping/delivery logistics figured out. But I am quite pleased with my copies. Love the content btw and am looking forward to the upcoming videos.
thank you! And yea, I think some of the retailers went through the trials and tribulations of shipping vinyl before the labels did, so Blue Note is a tad behind
absolutely, the exact same rhythm section on both, plus Byrd. Only difference is that you have two saxophones on Byrd in Hand instead of McLean. Also, Davis contributes two of the compositions on that album, AND recorded the same year. Too many connections.
@@jazzvinylcollector That's what I figured, too... I think I just needed to hear it from the boss himself! 😆 I'll be looking into this, not only for Davis Jr.'s stellar playing but also because I know Byrd plays great with saxophonists (as evidenced by his legendary partnership with Pepper Adams). Thank you for the feedback! This channel is the best.
The only thing that bothers me is we've heard them say for years now that the releases for Tone Poets do not have limited pressing totals and will stay in print for the long term. Then they flip the script and do this. I'd rather they stay consistent with the spirit of the Tone Poets. They could have still put this out as a limited issue and give it the Tone Poet treatment without calling it that. Another thing as I am interpreting from them is that the limited quantities may vary as they go down the line with future releases. Obviously, the more subscribers they have that qualify for these limited releases, the more they will have to make. That then means the series will be inconsistent in total quantities available for each release. Surely that makes this current release more "collectible" since there are only 1000, but wasn't the point of Tone Poets to get the lesser known/ appreciated Blue Note releases out there to the masses? How does this help the legacy of Walter Davis Jr? They could have probably sold 10,000 plus of these if they didn't limit the numbers available.
Definitely get your point. I agree, they would sell more if not protected behind the exclusive series, though I did hear that they are still available at the moment, so they either don't have enough subscribers or just not enough have opted to grab one. Walter Davis Jr. is far from the most recognizable name though, so I think it'd be different if it was a Lee Morgan release (oh, like how the Review box set locked one in), or if it was Hank Mobley or something. Still, I think there is room for the label to learn from this in some way. Perhaps they'll decide to release it via the Classic Series, perhaps they'll decide to only have numbered editions as the exclusives, or perhaps they'll abandon the whole Society concept after year one. Although, with the upcoming Verve subscription series, it feels like this is only becoming more of a thing.
@@jazzvinylcollector I have no skin in the game really. I have the 90's Connoisseur version, and I'm pleased with it. I think they would run into issues if they released it as a Classic. All the people that signed up for 3 records just to get Davis Cup will be pissed about that. If they really were looking to please their loyal customers while being the most profitable, they would loosen up on the policy of not making any record that was already a Music Matters release.
I think that is the right response to this ignorant attitude of Blue Note. No matter what Mr. Tone Poet says, he is only a tooth in the gear. Their marketing and sales people pull the strings, and here they pulled the wrong ones. Let‘s hope that the US Society program will compensate them for the amount of loyal non-US customers’ business they have alienated.
Mine comes tomorrow. I’m just curious, I signed up for Tone Poet Society on January 1st, but it seems that I’m not getting Januarys releases but actually February’s instead. This makes me wonder when I renew in 3 months will it make me late for the next exclusive.
good question. I wondered the exact same thing - what if people subscribe on an "off" month. Thus far, I can tell you that Davis Cup is still available, and we're at least a month or two after the subscription series was launched. I wonder if they have a model to determine that x% of total subscribers will want the exclusive, so they'll maintain sufficient stock even for those who opted to start a month or two later.
Thanks, if you know, is the Davis LP still available if I join the club? Limited to 1000 copies, and the website is no help, not even a way to contact BN to ask them. I have ordered from them before, communication after the order was very poor, so while I like the music and love they are making these LPs available again, customer service directly with them leaves a lot to be desired.
@@amosperrine1909 it was available on the 1st of January when I signed up. I had the same question you are asking though. They really should list how many copies are left on the page you sign up on.
Do you choose which records you receive monthly? Im not always interested in the current months offerings. Also think it would be a shame that some titles may now be limited to exclusives.
@@chrisaustin1505 no, you get the brand new releases for the associated month. So if you’re a member, you got Grass Roots and Freedom Sound for January, and had the option to buy Walter Davis Jr
Not taking away anything from the TPS vinyl edition .. if anyone wants to enjoy the music Acoustic Sounds has the Analogue Productions hybrid SACD on sale for $19.50 and sounds great as well
Exclusives or not, the holiday Sound Of Vinyl / UDiscover Music 50% off sale has spoiled me rotten on cheap Tone Poets. The Andrew Hill and Jazz Crusaders TPs were also 50% off. The Tone Poet Society doesn't look like a good deal if you're willing to wait until the end of the year to stock up on Tone Poets for cheap. Real cheap. I'm pretty sure you could just wait until the end of the year, get the Tone Poets you want for half off, pay flipper prices on Discogs for the exclusives, and still save tons of money. However you want to spend your money is your business (not you specifically Mr. WCB) but these crazy sales gaurantees I'll be waiting until the end of the year to purchase Tone Poets. Acoustic Sound Series as well. Also Amazon had these off for 50% for a while. Crazy deals!
@@patrickstaresq this was a great time for me to get into jazz, I scored a ton of Tone Poets and Classic series, as well as a Revolver box set on the 50%off deal. I will be better prepared next year I didn’t realize end of the year was a fire sale on new vinyl. I think you are probably right, I did sign up of the society this year, but I may consider what you are saying honestly. Just going to see how the experience is this year. Now just wondering when Sound of Vinyl will ship my order. It seems to be taking quite awhile, although I do realize it’s just that time of the year.
I’m speculating here, but thinking Blue Note will do a non-numbered Tone Poet release of Davis Cup and other exclusives. Has there been any official word on that?
Nothing official but I have to believe that they would not have pulled out the tapes to master only 1,000 copies. I think at some point Davis Cup will be re-issued in one of the other non-exclusive series such as a regular TP or perhaps even a Classic title to give the numbered TP’s even more cache. Just speculation on my part though at this point.
@ This would make sense from a business perspective and keep everyone happy. Personally I’m all about getting this incredible music in AAA and don’t care so much about collectors value.
I’m happy for non numbered with world availability . Be nice to have the print and extra bits but I actually want access to the music with the tone poet treatment . Also why not just do the society worldwide with same discount but normal shipping rates , quarterly deliveries would be fine a nice big lump of tone poets 4 times a year would be fine .

With the advent of the society this now means all those orders get shipped before record shops can even place a speculative order for what’s left. TPs are pressed in Germany.
