Joe Pass's famous "Virtuoso" recording series did much to re-establish his reputation as a master of the acoustic jazz guitar. Pablo put out the first one in 1974, followed by others in 1977, 1978 and 1983. He died at age 65 in 1995. From his biographical blurb on Discogs: "In the 1970s he recorded the first of several solo performances in which he adopted a fingerstyle approach to playing rather than using a plectrum."
Virtuoso is one of the best jazz guitar recordings ever. I have been waiting for that reissue for ages and I expected it to be released as part of the AP Pablo series.
Thanks for the great video! It was pretty helpful for me to think through the VMP situation. I joined VMP at the end of 2023 specifically to get the Electric Miles box set. I used a new membership coupon and since it was in stock I could use it to get a substantial discount on it. The ROTM was the Herbie Hancock Sextant, so I signed up for the Essentials track and decided to try it out. Plus, they announced the Story of Blue Note reissue and I was really interested in picking that up and we know what happened with that release and delays. I was pretty happy to upgrade some of my records with VMP versions (the 3 Fleetwood Mac's, Little Queen by Heart) and I added a few Jazz, rock and hip hop to my collection over 2024. The last couple of ROTM's for me were interesting, but maybe not titles I would consider essential to me. Since the Blue Note box is supposed to be shipping this month, I decided to use the credit I had to buy that for a little bit of a discount, and then I canceled my monthly subscription. I did month-to-month when I signed up because I wasn't sure how long I'd stay in it. So, I guess if VMP somehow comes back as a compelling option again, then I'll consider signing up again.
Just a couple of months ago, I gathered up all of my store credit..picked up Ahmed Abdul-Malik, Monk’s Music, Teo, Blacknuss, Straight Ahead, and Brown Sugar. With each passing day, I thank my lucky stars I was able to snag all of those. Wishing that VMP can pull themselves out of this, but color me concerned.
I'm with you. Those are great, no-regrets pick-ups. It's clear they have the ability to put out great stuff, I just hope they continue to have some solid choices and maintain enough interest for me to stick with them through the lean times.
Thanks for this. I have gotten the impression that we, folks who know a thing or two, are not VMP’s target audience. A couo,e years back I subscribed primarily because Analogue Productions was pressing their jazz titles, which I am most interested in. When that ended and it began using numerous unnamed plants, my relationship grew strained. The straw that broke the camel’s back was when I asked what was the difference between certain commercially available pressings and their pressings, and why the big price difference, I got a pro forma response saying that if cost was a factor then I should get the other pressing, totaling ignoring what, if any, was the cost difference that would warrant a higher price. However, I did resubscribe for 3 months just to get the Frisell and Jimmy Scott LPs. Another change is they no longer tell us what their quarterly releases will be, rather month by month, a pig in a poke.
Thank you for another informative video. As a new to Jazz music lover, I have gained valuable knowledge watching your channel. One reissues series that I do not see getting talked about much is the TBM reissues from Japan. I have gotten all of their reissues so far that are excellent musically and sound wise, find it at par or better than most US audiophile reissues. Worth check these out. Would love to hear your thoughts on these!
@@rakeshs1291 assume you’re referring to the Craftman vinyl series or something else? I have their pressings of Unicorn which is great! Only hurdle I encounter is bringing them into the U.S.
I believe these are called TBM reissues series by Sony Japan. Unicorn is being released in Feb 2025. They are putting out 3 per quarter starting in 2024. US availability is sparse, but can be order from Japan directly.
Vinyl Me, Please leaves such a bad taste in my mouth. Their business model from the top down feels so scammy to me. Boxes that take years to arrive, over priced subscriptions, exclusive releases being gatekept, etc... It's frustrating because they do have some great sounding reissues.
VMP sounds more like Columbia House all the time. No thanks. (See the Coen brothers' "A Serious Man": "But I didn't DO anything!" And Chris "Flipside" Wilcha's "The Target Shoots First," an insider's documentary about his time working for the Columbia House Record & Tape Club in the early 1990s.) As for the Prestige Miles Davis title: Walkin' (credited to the "Miles Davis All Stars") was recorded in April of 1953 and released in 1957, so it wasn't one of those legendary Miles Davis Quintet dates recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in 1956 after Davis had signed to Columbia: Cookin', Relaxin', Workin' and Steamin'.
Wow vinyl me please blows. I was a subscriber for 5 years. So glad I quit months ago. Still have year old preorders that haven’t shipped (including box sets.) what a joke. Also, have the recent monthly offerings been odd, or is it just me? Such a shame because I used to love it.

Nice one Chris, great video.. the Jazz Dispensary Golden Hour is the best they've done so far imo. Will look out for Multiple

VMP was good while it lasted; I purchased some records so have no complaints, but their new model just makes little sense.
I don’t know what to do. I might just get Milestones by Joe Henderson. We’ll see.
I think the Acoustic Sounds Pablo series is done.
Thanks for the info -- I am actually looking forward to the Verve subscription series. May quit VMP for this instead.
I have the Wes Montgomery from 1982. Do you know if it's all analog?
Good question. I know it's a George Horn mastering, which is a good sign. But I can't confirm whether its all analog or not.

Indeed some bizarre marketing- unnecessary complexity makes it special?

Your audio sound like it’s mono quite flat
This is the original mono edition, one-step small batch won’t come out until next year
@ lol, I meant you audio on the video

VMP just needs to stop this membership nonsense and just sell records.
VMP - will not be around this time next year.....they seem clueless. Seems like they keep digging themselves a bigger hole....
VMP is dead - "customers who needs them" new VMP motto or "give us your money before we change your subscription"
Good riddance to VMP. Karma.
