    I was once doing Turandot as a choir singer. A mega production in sport hall. Stage 50m x 100m amazing......
    We were rehearsing in a huge hall.... just concrete and steel........ cold and empty..... no atmosphere at all..... and then this scene came and at the end when we picked up Liu like in a funeral I could not surpress my tears..... Amazing music.... amazing scene.....

    She is heartbreaking. A wonderful moment in Katia Ricciarelli's career. Some say she didn't have a great voice and I know that she had vocal difficulties later on, but there was something special in the way she sang, a unique quality, that made her very great indeed.

    Adding to the pathos of this scene is the fact that years earlier Puccini's wife Elvira, convinced that her husband was having an affair with Doria Manfredi, a maid working in their household, hounded Manfredi until she committed suicide. While Puccini had always been hard on his heroines (Mimi, Tosca and Cho Cho San all die, two by their own hand) Liu's death is different: she kills herself out of desperation, not triumph. This piece serves as a rebuke both to Elvira (as Turandot) for her cruelty and Puccini himself (as Timur) for allowing it to go so far.

    I saw this production live in Vienna in 1983 standing room upper balcony were the sound wasn't very good, because most of the sound goes to the bottom of the Vienna State Opera but 26 years later I saw Gotterdammerung there in the standing section on the lowest level and the sound was incredible. Needless to say I was still very lucky to have been able to see this live.

      Well , in the Chinese adaptation of this opera , Turandot reacts badly after Liù commits suicide.She gets very ill , she also got drunk ( I quess that this is all happenning because of guilt ).Calàf's reaction is also very shocking.He is desperate .Turandot's suitors are spared at the end .She appears wearing Liù's clothes and marries Calàf.

    • @onigbajamo
      @onigbajamo 7 лет назад +4

      Teodora Pipin This from the woman who's been killing people like she's drinking water? It's out of character but makes the marriage to Calaf more believable, although my ideal Turandot would kill herself rather than marry Calaf.

  • @irmar
    @irmar 7 лет назад +56

    In Puccini's opera not only Turandot but Calaf is inhuman. He only thinks of himself. He never thinks of saving Liù from the prospect of being tortured by revealing his own name. Of course it would mean being executed, but after all he went asking for it (when everybody tried to dissuade him). He essentially saved his ass by letting an innocent one die. I think he is one of the most unlikeable male leads ever.

    Caro Rosario, sicuramente la signora Ricciarelli ha diviso molto l'opinione pubblica visto che la sua splendida natura vocale, evidentemente nel timbro lucente e morbido, nelle filature,nell'espressività del fraseggio, non era accompagnata certo da una tecnica solidissima, motivo di un prematuro delicno vocale.Detto questo però, nei primi anni la signora ha incantato tutti, compreso i critici primo su tutti il grande Celletti o direttori come karajan il quale disse

    "erano 40 anni che aspettavo di sentire un legato così". Prima di offenderla gratuitamente dovresti in primo luogo farti una domanda su come mai quella che tu chiami cogliona sarebbe arrivata, anche col suo dclino prematuro e approssimazione tecnica, a fare la carriera che ha fatto, dopo di chè pensare se veramente è poraccia lei e non chi come te si diverte a sparare commenti offensivi e senza capo nè coda dallo schermo di un pc.Buona vita !;)

    • @Enoigrof
      @Enoigrof 4 года назад +1

      Credo che sia innegabile la bellezza della voce e il legato, quello che si critica attualmente è l'ostinazione a volersi umiliare dopo una grande carriera così. Ora dovrebbe solo tacere e lasciare che ci si ricordi di lei per come era negli anni in cui sapeva cantare e che ammiro.

    I'm almost sure that Puccini's ending for this opera (if he didn't passed away before finishing it) was a sad ending for the protagonists, like Turandot committing suicide - there is a modern version with this ending, makes MUCH more sense, fits perfectly, and as far as I know, Puccini was known for sad endings as well.
    The happy ending from Alfano really feels so out of place.

    • @Elena-lj9db
      @Elena-lj9db 3 года назад +1

      Puccini, before dying, left 23 papers of scripts for the one that would have successed him for the end of the opera, and we know that Toscanini and the son Antonio Puccini chose Alfano. He first wrote a version more long and with more details, that follow more the scripts of Puccini. But Toscanini didn't accepted it, so Alfano was forced to delete some battutes (infact that ending part is a bit strange and not so "melodic"). Then Janet Meguire studied the manuscripts and composed a version of this, but it's never had been played. In 2001 then Berio wrote his version, more long than the Alfano's one, where Turandot take more time in change herself. Infact, Puccini, in the part of the kiss, wanted Turandot to accept her feelings, not like Alfano's where her pride is broke.
      By the way, some scholars think that Puccini never ever wanted the Turandot to turn in a tragedia just like his other operas, infact some theorized that he started to slow down till stop himself to write not just because he was sick, but even because of how it wasn't his style to do an happy ending.

    Tan criticada, tan defenestrada por publico y crítica ... sin embargo cuanto dariamos por tener una soprano lirica de semejante calidad tímbrica, un conocimiento cabal del fraseo pucciniano y un italiano perfecto que deja en claro que se trata de su idioma natar ... todo fluye: pianissimos, mezzavoces y fortissimos ... vaya fiato ademas! Nos merecemos las japonesitas caprinas, con italiano defectuoso, inexpresivas y sin fiato que tenemos que escuchar hoy en los teatros.

    TI basta cambiare il soggetto della frase sostituendo il tuo nome, se ho capito bene sei un uomo per cui anche la desinenza dell'aggettivo ("poveracci-O" )e otterrai un sacco di pollici in sù, primo fra tutti il mio! dopo se ci riesci, dai un senso alla tua vita che sia un po'più di alto che sputare offese gratuite su gente che, a differenza tua, un contributo significativo al mondo dell'arte l'ha dato e forse ha di meglio da fare che sparare stronzate. auguri!;)

    I don't dislike her as much as Nicopaollo does - without getting into any quibbling about her technique, I do find her sweet and sad, as Liu should be. However, the chorus is just leaden and that costume! The poor girl looks like a Romulan!

    What would happen if MAFALDA FAVERO, ELIZABETH RETHBERG WAS SINGING HERE? OR ANY OF THE GREAT RUSSIAN SOPRANOS FROM THE GOLDEN ERA. There wouldn't have been dragged tempi and hooty, covered tones as heard here.

    uhm she didn't even stab herself. and Lorin needs to go to some rehearsals so he knows what the singer wants to do.
