She is heartbreaking. A wonderful moment in Katia Ricciarelli's career. Some say she didn't have a great voice and I know that she had vocal difficulties later on, but there was something special in the way she sang, a unique quality, that made her very great indeed.

Thank you so very much for posting this gem. One thing is for sure when Katia Ricciarelli was good she was excellent and vice versa. Here she is beyond excellent.
Adding to the pathos of this scene is the fact that years earlier Puccini's wife Elvira, convinced that her husband was having an affair with Doria Manfredi, a maid working in their household, hounded Manfredi until she committed suicide. While Puccini had always been hard on his heroines (Mimi, Tosca and Cho Cho San all die, two by their own hand) Liu's death is different: she kills herself out of desperation, not triumph. This piece serves as a rebuke both to Elvira (as Turandot) for her cruelty and Puccini himself (as Timur) for allowing it to go so far.

I saw this production live in Vienna in 1983 standing room upper balcony were the sound wasn't very good, because most of the sound goes to the bottom of the Vienna State Opera but 26 years later I saw Gotterdammerung there in the standing section on the lowest level and the sound was incredible. Needless to say I was still very lucky to have been able to see this live.
Well , in the Chinese adaptation of this opera , Turandot reacts badly after Liù commits suicide. She gets very ill , she also got drunk ( I quess that this is all happenning because of guilt ).Calàf's reaction is also very shocking. He is desperate .Turandot's suitors are spared at the end .She appears wearing Liù's clothes and marries Calàf.
Teodora Pipin This from the woman who's been killing people like she's drinking water? It's out of character but makes the marriage to Calaf more believable, although my ideal Turandot would kill herself rather than marry Calaf.
Agree with Leontyne2. Very moving, great singing (and audio) with momentous impulse forward to her suicide. Haven't cried this much since Operation Lam Son 719 (Fire Base 30).
mrs Ricciarelli's interpretation is heartbreaking and i also agree with leontyne2. I think that she sings good, lyric piaissimis are beautiful. Don't compare strenght of voice between lyric and dramatic voices. The one, who critices her so badly, probably favoures big voices.
I felt the exact same thing after seeing it for the first time- but an interesting fact, that can shed some light on the weird storyline, is that Puccini died right after finishing her death scene.. Who knows how he whould have done it.
In Puccini's opera not only Turandot but Calaf is inhuman. He only thinks of himself. He never thinks of saving Liù from the prospect of being tortured by revealing his own name. Of course it would mean being executed, but after all he went asking for it (when everybody tried to dissuade him). He essentially saved his ass by letting an innocent one die. I think he is one of the most unlikeable male leads ever.
Claudio Kutufa Same, but I wish I could make a book or something where Liù and Turandot are best friends(I may be heterosexual woman of 19 ,but I adore female friendships.)Here are pairings of Turandot and Liù that inspired me for that(basically all Turandot and Liù pairings that I know) 1.Eva Marton and Katia Ricciarelli (1983 Vienna) 2.Eva Marton and Leona Mitchell (1987- 1988 MET) 3.Maria Guleghina and Marina Poplavskaya (2009 MET) 4.Maria Guleghina and Tamar Iveri (2010 Verona ,but that one not so much because Tamar is homophobic) 5.Lise Lindstrom and Maria Luigia Borsi (2012 France) 6.Nina Stemme and Anita Hartig (2016 MET) 7.Lise Lindstrom and Aleksandra Kurzak (2017 Royal opera House)
I think I like the role of Liu better than Turandot. Turandot is just a bunch of screaming and cold vocal performance. Liu is graceful with lots of legato and artistry.
What happened to the torture scene? Ping orders her to be tortured, she says she can resist no more, but nobody even touches her. She has no reason to kill herself, this is absolutely horrendous staging. It's too bad because she is perfect as Liu.
This video is just after the start of the "torture". Turandot instructs the guys to leave her for a while and commands her "Speak". Then she replies "I'd rather die". And here is where the video starts.
I'm almost sure that Puccini's ending for this opera (if he didn't passed away before finishing it) was a sad ending for the protagonists, like Turandot committing suicide - there is a modern version with this ending, makes MUCH more sense, fits perfectly, and as far as I know, Puccini was known for sad endings as well. The happy ending from Alfano really feels so out of place.
Puccini, before dying, left 23 papers of scripts for the one that would have successed him for the end of the opera, and we know that Toscanini and the son Antonio Puccini chose Alfano. He first wrote a version more long and with more details, that follow more the scripts of Puccini. But Toscanini didn't accepted it, so Alfano was forced to delete some battutes (infact that ending part is a bit strange and not so "melodic"). Then Janet Meguire studied the manuscripts and composed a version of this, but it's never had been played. In 2001 then Berio wrote his version, more long than the Alfano's one, where Turandot take more time in change herself. Infact, Puccini, in the part of the kiss, wanted Turandot to accept her feelings, not like Alfano's where her pride is broke. By the way, some scholars think that Puccini never ever wanted the Turandot to turn in a tragedia just like his other operas, infact some theorized that he started to slow down till stop himself to write not just because he was sick, but even because of how it wasn't his style to do an happy ending.
No wonder why Puccini could not find a way to finish Turandot. Everything that could follow Liu's death was superfluos.
In Puccini's opera not only Turandot but Calaf is inhuman. He only thinks of himself. He never thinks of saving Liù from the prospect of being tortured by revealing his own name.
