People say the players not knowing doesn’t mean anything, but I disagree. It shows that the team didn’t even prepare for the possibility of going into overtime. That is unacceptable for the biggest game of the year. I
100% agree. It's their job as professionals to know these things, and it's the coaching staff's job to make sure they know these things. You always want your players to know what must be done to win the game, so they know what is at stake for each play.
Chris Jones won’t get the credit he deserves, but he legitimately won that super bowl for him. Everytime the 9ers had an open man for a TD, he disrupted Purdy’s mechanics. On that 3rd down in OT, Aiyuk and Jennings had their DBs beat, and he was there to save the day!
Totally agree with you. Clearly, so did Andy Reid, as he pushed Chris over and jumped on him in gratitude! They need to PAY this man and keep him with the Chiefs.
Dan...Kyle is the guy who doesn't give Marshawn Lynch the ball at the 1-yard line for the win in Seahawks-Patriots Super Bowl...but tries to throw it to the WR because that's what innovative offensive gurus do.
If you were unaware of the new OT rule, it's not an excuse, it goes on to show your lack of preparation. Chiefs were familiar with the rules and were prepared on offense, defense, and special teams.
They say they didn't understand the rules, but the refs clearly explain it to them that it's a new game and both teams get a possession unless a defensive score results. I would have loved to see the clock run out and the 49ers being in total confusion. 😂😂😂
Right? Like I had no more questions after the coin toss. Idk why they were confused. It’s not like they had to listen to Romo talking over the explanation like I did.
yeah i immediately thought it was a bad decision. i understand wanting the 3rd possession if it goes to sudden death but that's not even guaranteed so that's very risky. and giving Mahomes 4 plays to get every 1st down to tie or win the game is even more risky because it's almost guaranteed he will convert in that situation. Orlovsky is 100% correct that you have to look at each teams' situation and decide that you give Mahomes the ball first and then give yourself 4 down territory to tie or win.
it's stupid that all these guys getting paid millions not knowing their rules of their job like me saying to my boss oh I didn't know I have to clock in before i start working
If you have the ball first in OT go for 6 or nothing. Screw the field goal because it gives your opponent 4 downs to win or tie. If the score is still tied then the 4 downs for your opponent goes away.
All the 49ers had to do was get a 4th down stop in OT and the game would’ve been over but Mahomes made an amazing play to rush up the middle to convert.
I will give you one better: they only needed 5 yards in 2 downs at the end of regulation to win the game. But Kyle decided to throw the ball twice, when CMC was getting 3.6 ypc
Without the muffed punt and the blocked extra point you don’t get to overtime, so let’s pump the brakes on the coaching. Losing Dre Greenlaw to a fluke injury doesn’t help. Taking the ball to start was okay with me to give the defense a breather after coming off the two minute drill. I would’ve preferred to have the added benefit of having the extra down in sudden death, but I can live with the decision. Chris Jones played phenomenal and came up huge in big moments, and Mahomes made some big plays in key moments. Every analyst is so quick to insert themselves and place blame, but neither team is there to lose. Sometimes it just comes down to a few key plays from your best players and a little luck.
Two plays do not make or break a game. Sorry. It’s like me saying if Pacheco didn’t fumble in the red zone Chiefs would’ve had a TD and there would’ve been no OT. You can’t possibly know what would’ve happened had those mistakes not been made. Say the 49ers didn’t have their PAT blocked. The Chiefs would’ve known they needed a TD instead of a field goal and possibly gone for it on 4th down and converted then went down to score. It’s just not logical.
If you hear the Chiefs talk about it, they had already prepped for OT in every scenario. If they got the ball second, they would always try to go for a TD and a 2-point conversion (unless they only need 3 and it's a 4th and long). They knew the same thing Shannahan did - if the first team gets the ball back, it's sudden death and the Chiefs were gonna do everything to prevent 49ers getting a 2nd possession in OT.
Niners were pedestrian at best the whole game. Defense was the only highlight but it all chalks up to another WASTED season & a embarrassing way to lose not knowing the rules 😂
It's crazy to now know that. But it's stupid that that's the rule. No issue with yesterday but that rule is stupid. What's the point of Timeouts ? It's dumb AF
The overtime rules had nothing to do with the game. The Niners should have won. They had plenty of opportunities had they not made game-changing mistakes. Of all the comments from every network, social media, etc., nobody blamed Purdy, so that's a win for him. Shanahan will win a Super Bowl; he needs to quit second-guessing himself and just go for it.
my only critique is that Shanahan in hindsight should have elected to not receive. The 2nd team is at an advantage if they know what they need because instead of kicking a field goal on a 3rd and short you get an extra play on 4th if you know you need to get a 1st for a touchdown so I think the new rules and this event will make coaches think diffrerntly in overtime. If I have the lesser QB I want the advantage of knowing what I need and getting 4 downs to get it. And obviously 49er players were confused on that final play they thought it was the end of the game instead of the start of the second quarter had the they ran the clock out. A lot of them even admitted after the game they didn’t realize the new rules meant there wasn’t 8 seconds left in the game but 36 minutes and 8 seconds. That was shameful.
49ers losing makes the decisions they took look wrong but no, taking the ball first in the ot with the news is the right choice. the 49ers just couldn't get the job done, that is it
Why are they making a big deal over getting the ball first in overtime???? Their defense just came off the field, and it wasn't like the Chiefs were scoring at will. Try to score , give your defense a rest, and let your defense hold them. Unfortunately, Mahomes decided to take over and run , putting his team in a position to win. That's why they were able to get the victory!!
"Their defense just came off the field" and the Chief's offense just came off the field. You rest your defense, but you also rest their offense. So that point cancels out.
It’s a very big deal. If you elect to possess the ball second you know exactly what you need to do in order to win the game if the Chiefs score OR don’t score and you also give your D a chance to win the game for you first. The 49ers kicked a field goal. Say possessions were reversed and Chiefs got their TD on a first possession. The 49ers would’ve gone for it on 4th down instead of kicking the field goal and possibly gotten that TD to extend OT. It’s huge.
