Maria giovanissima, appena arrivata in Italia già ci regala una delle sue interpretazioni fantastiche. Questo brano è l’essenza stessa della malinconia.
Such singing makes one grateful to have been alive post-Callas rather than pre-Callas. This recording has everything: tragic expression, exquisite phrasing, virtuosity and, more importantly, the ability to put technical expertise totally at the service of musical and dramatic truth. When feeble words are finished, one can but listen and wonder.
This is a miracle. At age 25 she could do this! It is not only the technique, the legato, etc. It's that she understood--with her heart as much as her mind--what is going on here. In fact, this is an expression of HER soul, not just Elvira's.
this is the difference with other sopranos...Callas gave THIS to this planet...Appreciate and be humble and grateful Genius is not someone with technical perfection(that is called a good professional or a brilliant "student") Genius is someone with this kind of performance
Opera is a not a voice competition, Opera is great art when everything is put together to a performance that reflects the composers idea of how it should be presented. No one is better at this than Maria Callas, and no one ever will. That is pure fact. Then your name can be Sutherland, Caballe or whatever, they only reach half the way.
@@filandiantsoubrette4838 If you find Sutherland and Callas "equal," then you don't really hear what Callas is giving us, I'm sorry to say. Pay attention to "heart." That's what this is about.
This is by far my favourite Callas moment in studio. She's absolutely sublime here. She sings gently but with a full tone that graces every note. And there is so much emotion in every phrase that makes me wonder why her fans always prefer the post 1955 Callas for characterisation.
Because they don't understand nuance. Her post-1955 interpretations relied on stronger and stronger effects (listen to the contrast between forte and piano in the 1965 Norma "Oh! non tremare", for instance) - a mode of dramatic interpretation that is easier to recognize than the exquisitely multi-nuanced non-veristic treasures we hear in this recording.
@judygarland7186 the vibrato there sounds under control to me. It's not wobbly. You don't have to be a Tebaldian to hate wobbly notes. John Ardoin, one of Callas' greatest fans, often criticises her flapping high notes.
Se é certo que Maria Callas estava bem preparada, também e verdade que o milagre foi produzido pela sua voz excecional e pela sensibilidade temperamental e por uma sensibilidade musical que atingia a perfeição!❤❤❤
This is amazing to me. This conveys more emotion and depth than any other singer I have heard, regardless of song. And to think that I did not like her voice when I was a teenager! It is out of this world.
Some of the most marvelous of her singing here -- the line is incredible, the control of her Wagnerian-weight voice is spectacular, messa di voce used only when utterly and truly expressive of the words and the emotions of the character. Enviable gifts. She was unable in the end to protect herself or her talent from life's disappointments and pain. RIP, bellissima diva.
Astounding young Maria’s heart rending emotion, miracle voice. My only wish Is that you replace the svelte Callas photo with her voluptuous figure of the pre-1954 weight. Her voice here eclipses any soprano in opera in beauty through character and musical intent, her melisma, legato, trills, phrasing, agility, weight, dark texture, color and emotion. The miracle.
I really do not understand how you people can think of such basic concepts as "vocal technique" when confronted to miracles of mankind as are most interpretations ( I would not call it just that, but musical recreations) of this greatest of all singers...Let the also greats Renata Tebladi, Joan Sutherland, Monserrat Caballè, and perhaps the greates of all this sort of singers, singers that ""sing the voice", Zinka Milanov. Callas, of course, sings the music!
aaahhh mai più, qui affani insieme . . . there are points in this where there is no vocal artifice, she's experiencing everything Elvira feels, with no "as ifs". If there is any explanation for her voice beginning to unravel in the 60s, it's that singing like this is impossible to maintain for more than 10 years . . . impossible.
l defeinitely agree, with both things u said. Though in those early years she would still ""hold back"" some hystrionics she started after 1955 or something However her phrasing is so touching here, and later it got even more
Ummm...this is Maria Callas. You might not like her but she is a real soprano. DUH. Anyone who knows about opera would never ever suggest Maria Callas wasn't inadequate, so let's listen to Anna Netrebko. Different era, different technique, different take on the interpretation, different orchestra and conductors, different recording equipment...etc.
@skitzo429 No I do not.. but I do know that CAllas was the greatest soprano of the 20th century, and there is certainly no one to touch her now either.. When you get serious, and really listen to Callas, you realize how good she really was..... There are not many even close to her.. Ponselle.. . was.. and Sutherland, as much as I detest so many of her mannerisms,. but the woman had a voice!
Yes, I feel that Devia has surpassed Callas in technique only, espression is another issue. However, this recording is quite excellent, and Callas' voice sounds beautiful!
Sencillo...
Like most Callas fans, you seem to think everyone who disagrees with you is ignorant and doesn't know what they're talking about. I have a masters in music, and I speciaze in opera, thanks. Many professional singers have gone on the record saying similar things about her emotiveness, musicianship and acting being her stronger points, which compensated for her vocal shortcomings, believe it or not it's not just my "ignorant little opinion."
You are not answering to what I wrote, you just continue with personal attacks instead of sober criticism supported by valid arguments. Feel free to continue, but I do think you're putting yourself in a worse light than the light in which you try to put Callas.
Why does she always disrupt the flow of the music to prioritize emotion and drama? You can hear the whole orchestra comprising and tumbling with her. It just sounds really unmusical to me.
@willthrillws I am a true Callas fan ... but your statement is plain stupid! Sutherland was ALSO a great singer ... don't show REAL music lovers up with such foolish remarks.
Any real music lover knows that while Sutherland was a great singer; Callas was much more than that. She was the embodiment of the character she performed. She acted with her voice, her hands, her eyes, her entire self and one can say her soul. Seeing Sutherland was like going to a concert; beautiful music with an occasional flash of the character being played.
Devia, does not interpret music, she sings it the way she wants to, rather than observe any markings, dynamic, or otherwise of the composer .... Her voice is only OK, now that she has ventured into the dramatic coloratura repertoire, she is out of her depth.. without the voice to pulll it off.. so that she screams most of it. I cant stand the woman to be honset. When she isnt irritating me, she puts me to sleep.
@kgarmaker123 'greatest soprano of the 20th century,' aside from being fundamentally subjective, is far too complex a matter to be generalized so broadly. there are so many different things that go into making an artist, much less just a singer. Callas was a ground breaking artist, actress, and an astute musician, but most professionals agree, her voice and technique were not top quality. she was an important, influential force, but as a singer its opinion at best to call her the greatest.
"most professionals agree" - I'd like to see the facts or at least a comprehensive report. my experience is that every other great singer and conductor and orchestral musician I know always... always speaks about the early stuff as being technically out of this world. Most will agree that the later stuff was not technically top drawer. So maybe the debate needs to recognize a few different periods in her career.
I am not writing nonsense. You Devia folks are VERY sensitive to factual statements about the artistry or lack therof of ms. Devia. Callas is not perfect. And there are other singers that I enjoy far more than Devia, say Sills for instance. She could sing and interpret and she was musical too.
What would it be like if millions don't like her metallic voice? Only in USA and Italy Callas is a reference. Here in europe are much more and better singers like Callas. In europe she is forgotten and BTW she sings only italian opera crap!
@CatalinaDM56 sure, if vibrato you could drive a truck though is perfect technique. dont you be naive, its common knowledge that the foundation of Callas' career lied in her skills as an actress, her astuteness as a musician, and her emotive singing, and then the quality and beauty of her voice as well as her technique were lackluster. the fact that she even pretended to front as a coloratura was a joke.
I beg to differ. Freedom is always the freedom of dissenters. I can read and you write nonsense. "Wagner was influenced by Verdi" why not, but Wagner make it much better. Your opinion is based on RUclips videos and I can't take you seriously. As far as I am concerned, was Callas a yellow press Diva and plain vanilla.
@belcunto Your comment disqualifies you as a decent fellow. I bet, you're gay! Yes, she was a genius, highly talented, hardworking, with a brilliant technique. BUT she sounds shrill, metallic, sometimes colourless and very boring. If I hear her for over 3 minutes I turn down the volume or must vomit. And in the interest of full disclosure.... it sucks! Well, it's my opinion, my taste and I use Callas' bad voice and timbre to compare her as EXAMPLE with beauty voices for me and my work.
Sehr, sehr rhythmisch und nie zu früh eingesetzt. Es grenzt an Perfektion. ❤

And she recorded this when she was singing Wagner roles... I mean... it is extraordinary!
So touching!! She could combine flawless singing with such pathos. You could feel Elvira’s longing in this recording.

the last note (6:55) has wobble which is the thing that Tebaldians hate about Callas the most
