Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone) is a beautiful, wealthy and popular highschool student living in a Beverly Hills mansion with her rich dad Mel (Dan Hedaya), a grumpy but successful lawyer. Cher’s best friend, Dionne (Stacey Dash) is also beautiful and wealthy and dates Murray Duvall (Donald Faison), another popular student. After receiving a bad grade from a harsh teacher, Cher decides to play matchmaker and orchestrates a romance between her school’s two hard-grading teachers. Her plan ends up working perfectly and seeing the new couple enjoying their blissful relationship fills her with joy. She decides to keep using her skills for good deeds. Her next project? Transforming Tai Frasier (Brittany Murphy), the “tragically unhip” new girl, into one of the coolest girls in school. When Cher’s ex-step brother Josh (Paul Rudd) visits her during a break from college, he mocks her superficiality, pushing her to be even more selfless.

I like how the dad is scary and overprotective, but also kinda doesn't give a shit. I also like how the guy is scared and also kind of doesn't give a shit. A perfectly played scene between the two.

... anyway, I totally know what you mean the actors showed this scene on point. He displays enough protectiveness to make his daughter feel loved but also has respect for her autonomy and isn’t weird or sexist about it- he ultimately wants her to go out, have fun, make her own decisions and make memories.
This comes across really well and it’s genuinely sweet to watch.
He isn’t a careless Dad but he has a level of actual respect for his daughter. So many Dad’s take it too far one way or another- not giving a single shit or hyper policing what she wears and who she sees like she’s a thing. It’s a refreshing take.

I've always loved the relationship between Josh and Mel (the dad). Mel was Josh's stepfather, now he's just Josh's ex-stepfather. By all accounts that ought be a tough relationship, except they truly bonded with each other. Mel sees that Josh wants to date his daughter and he couldn't be happier with the idea. Josh always defends Mel as being one of the few people in his corner. These two characters stole the show for me.
true! lol mr knightley's age only works because it wasn't weird to have that kind of age gap before. besides, emma was an adult in the novel, but cher isn't (right?) so it would be weird if josh was in his 40s still.

Alicia looks super gorgeous and so pure in that dress. There's something about her that screams beauty, class and of course naivety. It's not easy for any girl who would just walk in & assume the role that exudes all those qualities on screen at once. Yet, Alicia did it perfectly and she makes us fall in love with her & her character, Cher.

I feel sorry for the people who say her dad is scary. That's just a dad who cares about his kid. Those of us with good dads know
The dad/daughter relationship is one of the things I like best about the movie. In lots of movies at the time, parents were portrayed as clueless idiots and/or their kids were fighting with them and hating them. But Cher has a great relationship with her dad. He's still a dad (wants her to cover up a bit more, wants the guy taking her out on a date to be careful with her), but he's not clueless and they don't fight.
He threatened the kid with death.... He can be scary AND be a dad who cares about his daughter, and he is exactly both lol
I think it's so funny how Josh is supposed to be staring at Cher coming down from the top of the stairs but the next shot reveals that she wasn't even visible until she was at the bottom really haha

A). this movie from 1995 when companies and famous people weren't quite as hot headed toward depictions of them in media.
and B). they aren't necessarily talking negatively about the associated individual, in this case Sui. (Other than Cher's dads underwear resemblance comment, but that's the whole point of the line anyway.)
it could also be that she didn't even know about the film. its unlikely, but certainly possible.

Clueless is so much more clever than most people give it credit for. Such a wonderful film. Not *just* an Emma adaptation.
This might be coincidental but it’s interesting how Josh comments on Cher’s dress almost like how Gaston criticizes Gigi’s dress right he before he sings the song. Again, that part may have been coincidental but the music choice itself was definitely intentional!

My favorite part of this scene is the fact that the dress is actually NOT made by Calvin Klein, it’s made by Anna Sui but at the time she wasn’t really popular so the script credits CK because the name was more popular therefore recognizable.
