Stephane Lambiel really personifies the music he skates to, and Daisuke Takahashi is also an awesome less traditional skater! Although they were both in the mid 2000s, so not completely modern. But 2 of my faves

I came across this video after watching the 2018 Olympic games men's individuals. And the contrast is so striking. While the elements became more complicated (although, Yagudin was performing the most difficult jumps at his time), the whole skating became just a set of jumps. Here you see the performance and the story. This guy perfectly feels the music and the ice, has the personality and artistry combined with a perfect technique and power. The program itself is beautifully built, and Yagudin be like: I am the king of ice, I can make the moon walk on ice, I can show the most beautiful sequence of steps. And this is not even the competition, it was the Exhibition Overcome, and all the elements are still flawless.
Are you sure that you watched Yuzuru Hanyu's 2018 performances? Especially his Gala dance where he did only 2 jumps but wrote poetry on ice? I totally agree that figure skating came down to jumps and just technical stuff but Hanyu seems to stand out. His whole thing is telling a story. "Seimei" for instance. Look at his expressions and gestures while skating. This is why I respect this guy

yagudin is absolutely the best male skater russia has ever produced... technically and artistically superb, a rare combination.. i also remember how he jumped quads at the olympics, the only one to do it during competition without too much trouble (seemingly).. i wish he trained somebody to substitute him..

One of the world's best performance ever, these superstar talented athlete I want to meet someday and show him my appreciation by donating him one of my original paintings or one of my original sculptures that also wer'e created from the soul just like his brilliant talent, this type of genius athletes come every 50 years, so we gotta wait that long to get another Alexei Yagudin.

When I have difficult presentations, events in my life I always watch this video. Don't know how, but it really inspires me! Probably, as a sample of human's perfection in his job.
The CHOREOGRAPHER of this program deserves kudos. Mr. Yagudin did a fine job performing what the CHOREOGRAPHER created and the COACHES trained him to do. It isn't said often enough. It's always a team of hardworking professionals that produces such.
Alexei Yagudin is the best skater in the history! Better than Plushenko, better than all..I love Plushenko but Yagudin is The Best, he is magnificient! I see a lot of passion in his interpretation. He succeed every time to makes you feel and live the music. This Gala program from 2002 is unquestionable the best, very technical , very artistic. I can see it 100 times and i never bored.
And you can't help but notice, he's a rather attractive dude... apart from the impossibly great skating, agility, power, speed, techniique and artistry.. yes, rather attractive as well. Always helps.

could I ask how you know that the person that wrote this is an amateur you cant say that unless you know them personally , you don't know whether they are a figure skater or not whether they are a judge or not don't judge a persons opinion just because they thoroughly enjoyed something to say it the way you did says that this persons opinion has no credence no basis

Alexei and Plushenko seemed about equal technically, and both had artistic talent. The winner just depended on who was having a better day that day. But Alexei had better music and choreography, which gave him amazing stage presence on the ice. Plushi was so flashy as to be distracting and smother the talent, even in competition. And really, compare their "masculine" exhibition programs. Alexei's program here in simple black had me in tears, while Plushi's "Sex Bomb" has to be the biggest TURNOFF in the history of skating. No contest. But saddest of all is that in the past dozen years, there hasn't been at least one other amazing male skater that can even get close to Alexei and Evgeny? The women's skating has progressed a looong way, but for men we're stuck watching programs that are older than RUclips itself. C'mon boyz, man up!

I could not agree more. Alexi was the whole package. Looks, masculinity, grace, power, athleticism. I felt he never got the credit he deserved due to that Ygeni who I could never understand. All pleshenko ever did was skate from one end of the rink to the other jump and do it again, he was unfairly favored. Whatever happened to Alexi?

Plushenko has been at or near, the top, for 16 years now even through all the serious operations. For sheer longevity in such a demanding sport no one comes even close to him. Yagudin, Chan, Hernandez, they are all great skaters, Plushenko however, is a legendary skater.

John Curry was in a class by himself. He was the first and so far the only skater to bring classical ballet dancing to the ice.
