This guy has had 32 surgeries prior to the 2014 sochi Olympics. Goes to show how much he loves figure skating. Definitely world champion.

@@jessryan2104 All sorts of sport-related injuries (meniscus tear, fractures, hernia, spinal problems...etc). He had an intervertebral disc replacement just prior to the Sochi game. Had to relearn walking, skating, and jumping, etc after that major surgery. So, yes he's definitely a very hardy warrior. :)
@@jessryan2104 And to fill out the story, Plush won his second Olympic gold medal in the team event and at 31 years old too. It was quite an accomplishment and Evgeni become only the 4th man in Olympic history to win two Olympic gold medals and to join that exclusive club. (Yuzu Hanyu is the 5th man to join the club, as of 2018.)
Plush had, however, to pull out of the men's individual event later that week and so never got to skate against Yuzu. While practicing his huge triple axel during the warmup, Plush suddenly could only feel pain in his back and could not feel his landing leg. After consulting with his team he made the extremely difficult decision to withdraw from the competition due to medical reasons. It turned out that while completing the triple axel, Plush had literally broken one of the bolts that held his artificial intervertebral disc in place, and two of the others were loose. He made the right decision to withdraw. The broken bolt was dangerously close to his spinal cord and had he chosen to skate Evgeni might well have paralyzed himself. It was speculated that the disc problem and the back pain he was feeling during the team skate made Evgeni double his last two jumps. Sounds right to me because Plushenko could still do triple jumps in his sleep at that stage of his career.
It was heartbreaking for long time fans, because Plush wanted so much to win a 5th Olympic medal. But in the end, it's no matter. He remains even now the most decorated man in the history of men's figure skating, and the all-time Olympic men's champion with four Olympic medals (two gold, two silver). He's a true fighter and quite a legend in the sport.

When I was a kid, I used to watch Olympics and Plush is one those greatest ones and that's why he stayed in my mind somehow with his figures. Every legacy has a story behind and sometimes very painful one. It was nice to learn.

Я видела это вживую , 6 февраля 2014 года ! На следующий день было Открытие Олимпийских игр Сочи - 2014. Евгений не катался, он парил надо льдом ! Телевидение не может передать волшебство его катания тогда . Не забуду это никогда !

С таким прокатом в нынешних реалиях даже в топ-10 на ЧМ не попал бы. А до Ханью ему как до Сатурна, также, как и до Ягудина в плане энергетики. Пересмотрел - без особого восторга, прошлый век.

Не могу не оставить комментарий. Столько лет прошло, а я все ещё помню тот прокат и те эмоции. Это высший класс, высший пилотаж, это космический уровень. Уйти из спорта, пройти через множество разных проектов (Ледниковый период, Евровидение, различные шоу). И несмотря на различные травмы, вернуться вот так, красиво, триумфально. Это может сделать только человек с огромным потенциалом, внутренним стержнем, с огромной уверенностью в собственных силах. Я под впечатлением!!! Огромный, огромный респект и уважение. Вот про кого нужно снимать фильмы, показывать молодёжи и всем тем, кто не находит в себе силы подняться и идти дальше. Евгений - вы самый, самый лучший!!!

Wow. His last performance before that bloody injury that stopped his flying. That is one of the most precious performance in the figure skating history. The Legend's "black swan". Unbeliavable. He will undergo a major surgery in 3 March...one of the bolts sustaining his plastic disk broke during that awkward landing. I pray for him to be ok. Thank you, Evgeni Plushenko for everything. Be well and take your highly deserved rest for healing.

Evgeni Plushenko's been there for 20 years and has ruled the ice every single second he has skated. He's probably had more injuries and surgeries than anybody else, yet every time his execution is perfect. He is an intelligent and very experienced skater and its like watching him in an exhibition not a competition. He is also so adorable while waiting for the results in the kiss and cry area, as if nothing has changed in these 20 years. He is LEGEND.!!!!!!!!!

I don't really see why it's a problem for people to be interested in figure skating because of an anime. I think it's wonderful that people are learning who these amazing athletes are regardless of how.
I'm really happy as to how popular Yuri on Ice is getting because it will hopefully show off how amazing figure skating is since it's definitely one of those sports that only gets a spotlight every four years at the Olympics. Maybe it'll get a bit more love after people see Yuri on Ice...
Kayrae It's not a problem. It's only a problem when people say that the only reason figure skating is popular is because of this Yuri on Ice. Or when they call these great athletes by these fictional characters names instead of learning who they really are. Other than that, it's not a problem.

Personally, I have definitely gotten MORE into it because of Yuri on Ice, BUT I actually loved it before. So, I can understand both sides. On one hand, it is great for figure skating to get more recognition, but on the other hand it's not really that great to imagine them all as yaoi pairings or comparing them to fictional anime characters.

To this day I still consider him the greatest figure skater of all time. I started watching him compete when I was very young, and even now I still go back and rewatch his videos. His execution was always flawless & graceful and not only that but his programs were never lacking in substance like I see that so many others are. Sure, others can land the jumps and whatnot but they still aren't very interesting to watching, with him you just couldn't look away. His passion definitely showed. I remember being so disappointed when he dropped out because I thought that he for sure had the gold in his hands but when they said why I was just so concerned for him. I hope he is doing well now and not in too much pain.
I always get teary eyes when he skate to adagio in G minor, he couldn’t the big jumps at that point, but the emotion is so raw. I can’t help crying, thinking about his career, his injuries, his passion, normally I am more of the rational type, but he is Plushenko!
And I came here yet again. What a legend, you can literally feel the passion he has for figure skating

Почему то все забыли с чьей помощью у нас в стране в первые состоялась зимняя олимпиада. С его помощью была завоёвана первая олимпийская медаль. Ваш любимый Кофтун, профукал три квоты по фигурному катанию. 2010 году после завершения карьеры, только Плющенко поехал на Олимпиаду в Канаду и там занял 2 место, Когда плохо в мужском одиночном катании всегда помогал Плющенко. Он столько сделал для страны, многим на 2 жизни хватит. Как хватает у вас совести его поливать грязью, вы то чем лучше. У него как-то хватает терпения не отвечать на такой негатив. Плющенко будет всегда самым лучшим, спортсменом на века, к нему идут учится, будут идти учится, и у него есть чему поучиться. Хочется сказать огромное спасибо его тренеру Алексею Мишина. Ещё не одному тренеру не удавалось работать в течение 20 лет вместе, только профессионалы так могут а все грязь льёте, наибольшее неспособны, позор вам так гнобите такой счастливый тандем

This was a good program. Twenty years is a very long time to skate, and you can see how comfortable he was working the crowd. He has no need to prove himself, so he's having some fun on home ice.

He was, is, and always will be, the true King of the Ice. No-one else can come close. He is a legend. And it is so fitting that this was his final competitive outing. Proving that he was still the best, even at his age, even with fifteen surgeries, even with three screws in his spine.

StrawberrysDead Yagudin was way better. I remember years ago where he deserved the gold and they gave it to Plushenko even tough he fell during a jump and Yagudin only had a second of balance lost. He knew it was going to be Plushenko so he didn't even listen the result and he was very pissed off cause it was not fair. In this games sometimes, unfair things happens. Like Yuna Kim got Silver while most people agree she deserved Gold. It was flawless. So I agree Yagudin is the best and way better than Plushenko even tough he is also really good!
mirostarreal Yagudin's technic is good but Pluchenko's performances are more attractive, more charming and full of art. Pluchenko's movements, gestures have the combination of skating and ballet. Yagudin's technic maybe a little bit better but Pluchenko's art is absolutely better and he deserves to be the King, the legend of ice skating.

Тот случай, когда возраст , наоборот, прибавил качества. Ведь настолько чистых, отточенных, высоких и легких прыжков у него не было даже в Турине, когда он был на 8 лет моложе, а в данном случае правильнее сказать младше. Потрясающе! Браво, Евгений!

If only he could have done it all through the program but time catches up with all of us. In 2021, I am still amazed by this man's skills. He appears sometimes in the background when younger skaters do their thing and I'm thinking "That's Evgeny!" when some kid has jumped a lot of quads. Evgeny! Awesome! Still in 2021. Hero!
