I'm totally agree! Kim Burrell is the best in the world when we talk about riffs, putting in the right place and timing, but I think that on this occasion she didn't hit the nail on the head very well in this song.
I think she was listening to the monitors for cues and timing from the orchestra. It’s also a style to be slightly behind, or in front of the music like Whitney often was. That’s what we singers sometimes do, especially in a setting like that. The piece also had some intricate chord changes.
