How many rigs are you managing? Once I got to over 5 rigs, it became a PITA to manage them all and thats when I moved to Simplemining. I am at 9 rigs now and 3 desktops. The cost is minimal but having not to deal with windows issues is priceless at this scale. I would be happy to give you demo of my setup if you want. :)
I've got one 1080 TI in my main PC. That obviously has to remain on Windows so can continue to use Awesome Miner for that. I then have 29 GPUs spread across four mining rigs. I appreciate the offer. I'm giong to pick up some USB flash drives and give it a try this week. If I have any problems I will definitely ask for help :)
Hi Kev, I would recommend using Smos. Very easy to use, Looks a lot better than Hiveos and has more of a professional feel about it. 2 Dollars a month per rig to use it is well worth it. Supports up to 15 cards per rig also. I am finding the overclocking feature very useful in this hot weather as you can set it to have different overclocking settings for each separate card. So if one is running really hot you can dial that one down a bit
ive been using windows pro from a cheap key. had no issues, which version of windows you using maybe that could be the problem, only reason i went for pro was to be able to disable updates and update when i want to update, as pro unlucks the feature. dont know if this helps.
actually did have a issue that effected all my mining downloads a few weeks back, found reinstalling the nvidia drivers fixed it all, not sure if it was a windows update that messed it up or not. happened more then once.
My chrome, firefox and sometimes even internet explorer blocks some programs such as Zenemy 1.11, their dedicated github got blocked everytime. once going through the sortiment of different browser it finally downloaded and instantly got flagged by windows defender and the issue started over ... all i say is "fuck of windows and other programs", let me decide what to download or not.
i still have to disable antivirus everytime i download a new miner and stick it in a isolated folder :( , but never had the issue your talking about and i turn my updates on once a week so fully up to date.
First, thanks for all the effort, I really enjoy your content, thanks. I waited months before switching the majority of my rigs from windows to smos, I still hav 4 rigs on windows and windows is much higher maintenance. I have found that Smos just runs, hash rates are higher and payouts from the pools are better than running awesome miner as a skin over the mining programs. I still need windows for a few coins but I far prefer smos when possible.
That's great you have experience running both. What kind of limitations have you found with using SMOS? Is there anything you can't do with it that you could do with awesome miner?
It does unfortunately seem it's going that way. Only option just now seems to be to disable Windows Defender completely. I'm trying a Linux solution this week.
Hello Kev, I use the free version of Avast. It seems to override Windows Defender so Windows update does not mess with any exclusions you have set up in Avast. I use Awesome Miner and Nicehash with no probs after Windows updates.
I installed Avast after watching a DaveTech CA video. It just takes over as your anti virus and Defender gets turned off. It's a bit of a predator with regards to quarantine of mining software, so you may have to copy them to a usb and then use exclusions on awsome miner and usb drive, before putting them back.
No when you install Avast it takes over from Defender, never had to turn Defender off manually. I think when you first install Avast, Windows alerts you that you are not protected for a couple of mins when the install is completing.
2 six card rigs, 2 gaming PC's all mining for six months , no problems with exclusions once set up, all on Windows 10 Pro all using the free version of Avast. So I have not had any problems using mining software with Avast.
I might disable Windows Defender and use malware bytes. To be honest, the chance of a virus is slim as it isn't connected to my WiFi network, but always better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks for the update Kev, Waiting on the Linux tests to try myself. Keep smiling !!
Thanks Garry.

Thanks Rob.I keep changing my mind as to which one to try first.
I'm going to order some USB sticks first.
I reckon 16GB flash drives would be enough
Or it would be better to register at the exchange?
What do you mean by registering at the exchange? You mean trading instead of mining?
Is it possible to exclude all the files individually as well as the folder for a temporary workaround?
It doesn't matter. The main folder is already protected but Windows still flags it up. Very frustrating.
Kev's Crypto Channel did you try it? As it use to be a workaround a few years ago with McAfee until an update sorted it.

I have Windows pro, but it isn't activated. :)

Nvidia can be funny too. I usually avoid downloading all the extra software it wants to download and just downlod the drivers.
switched to smos after windows kept updating, even after disabling that function. Not 1 problem since.
SMOS and HiveOS seem to be the ones everyone is turning to.
Chrome has did that to me too. It just flat out refuses to allow me to download certain miners. I normally use Tor when that happens.
i still have to disable antivirus everytime i download a new miner and stick it in a isolated folder :( , but never had the issue your talking about and i turn my updates on once a week so fully up to date.
Finminer got slammed hard by Windows Defender.
It's such a pain. I've got a USB flash drive coming today to try HiveOS.

Ran into the same problem. I may be forced to use Linux. I guess the honeymoon is over for mining on Windows.

Knock, knock - who’s there? - hiveos- hiveos who? Hive an os to save your winblows woes.
My USB drive arrived yesterday. Going to give it a try this week :)
Hello Kev,
I use the free version of Avast.
It seems to override Windows Defender so Windows update does not mess with any exclusions you have set up in Avast.
I use Awesome Miner and Nicehash with no probs after Windows updates.
So have you manually disabled windows Defender and activated avast?
I installed Avast after watching a DaveTech CA video. It just takes over as your anti virus and Defender gets turned off. It's a bit of a predator with regards to quarantine of mining software, so you may have to copy them to a usb and then use exclusions on awsome miner and usb drive, before putting them back.

It sounds like Avast is just as troublesome as Windows Defender.
2 six card rigs, 2 gaming PC's all mining for six months , no problems with exclusions once set up, all on Windows 10 Pro all using the free version of Avast.
So I have not had any problems using mining software with Avast.
I cant even download Awesome Miner defender wrecks it every time, it looks good untill you try to run it then you find files missing.
It does that with many mining applications. Very frustrating.
Just use win7
I do realise that's an option, but the time involved in downgrading and setting it all up makes Linux a much more attractive option.
Why don’t u disable defender? ruclips.net/video/Qtamo9lKNuQ/видео.html I have never had problems with defender mining.
I also run this mod ruclips.net/video/DHoj8bQDjUc/видео.html ; keeps nvidia from blocking miners
I use awesome miner and have had no problems in the last 7 months with these two mods
I might disable Windows Defender and use malware bytes. To be honest, the chance of a virus is slim as it isn't connected to my WiFi network, but always better to be safe than sorry.
