As someone who just watched the movie, and let me tell you one, spoiler-filled, thing about the story: It doesn't matter. Like, it's really self-aware in that sense.
There is a mech literally called Deus Ex Machina, and that made me really believe that they weren't here for the story, and God do they know I wasn't there for the story either.
I liked it, it made me laugh. I am definitely gonna watch this somewhere again.

We just loved th movie so much we want to watch more of it, but sadly they covered basically everything a movie could show. Plus the story wouldn't make sense if they continued:(

God that animation looks so different and unique I want to see it just for that. I have to say after watching your video I def would like to watch it, hopefully Funimation or something picks it up for a limited us release I would really like to see in theaters, if not I will probably buy it.
If that doesn't happen, maybe they'll stream the film on Netflix? (Not farfetched given that Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, and Little Witch Academia are there as well)

For anyone who wants to know the "juicy details" about Trigger's decision with Galo, here it is (spoilers):

During the final scenes of the movie, Lio is on the verge of death and Galo is trying to save him. Because of this, he uses the Burnish mouth-to-mouth technique as a last resort; in other words, a kiss of life. The kiss itself lingers for about 20 seconds and is practically the climax of the movie.
Is it CPR? Well, no, not to our knowledge anyway. The technique is never explicitly referred to as CPR in the movie, and the two times it was used, it consisted of only one step of real CPR, the mouth-to-mouth. In that respect, it has the same use as CPR, but was honestly just a Burnish kiss. The second time it is used, we see Galo doing chest compressions as performed in actual CPR. This isn't actually part of the technique (Lio didn't do any chest compressions when doing this before), but rather Galo trying to apply his firefighter training to the situation before attempting the kiss ("Alright, guess I've got no choice!"). Meaning that when Galo mouth-to-mouthed Lio, he only attempted CPR before, well, smooching him for the one-third minute as he was supposed to in the first place. During the kiss, Galo's left hand and two fingers are used to tilt Lio's chin upwards, like in real CPR. His right hand, however, is grabbing Lio's hair, when ideally it would be pinching Lio's nose if it were CPR. So no, not CPR. Of all of the methods Trigger could have picked for the Burnish to revive each other (it's fire magic, ffs), they picked a kiss.
Well, was it gay? Technically, not at all. This is Studio Trigger we're talking about. There is no inherent romance between these two characters (neither of the characters even blush once in the entire movie). There's more literal romance between Galo and Aina (the pink haired girl) than between Galo and Lio. In the end, Galo had simply used Lio's little kissy technique to save him and there's really nothing else beyond that. The movie is punctuated with the two fist bumping like the bros they are.
On the other hand, when we dive into the subtext of the movie... Yes, it very easily can be argued that it was gay. Directly after he saves Lio's life, Galo looks disgusted and freaks out, not because he kissed another dude, but because he "lit a fire for the first time in his life". Take that as you will. He then yells for Lio to "take responsibility", a phrase in Japan used before couples start dating. After this, Lio takes off his shirt and the two half-naked guys save the earth after their mecha explodes into a giant heart-shaped cloud. No, I'm not exaggerating. If this wasn't enough, the entire movie is littered with love songs between the two, the two main vocal tracks by Superfly even specifically stated to be about "romantic love" from "Galo to Lio". Not to mention that the theme of the movie itself is about minorities fighting against society and the government with pink triangles, the symbol of gay men/LGBTQ identities, being its symbol. There's a truckload of other stuff people have gathered, but you get the point.
Now, was it intended to be gay? This... we'll never know, I suppose. Apparently, an interviewer asked Trigger if the kiss was in the story from the start. Trigger responded that it was, and that it was a common technique. After this, they explained that it started as a running joke that got taken too seriously (Trigger staff joking about their two main characters making out... Huh.) Ultimately, Trigger is definitely self-aware of how gay it was, and whether the movie's staff themselves are in on the ship definitely varies. (For trivia reasons, Superfly getting a preview of the movie and choosing to write their songs about unrequited love; Imaishi complaining that he should have removed the CPR scene; Trigger staff making "up to interpretation" shipping art; Nakashima trying to stop fans from "labelling the characters"; Galo's seiyuu admitting that Lio's voice made him horny; official art that seemed like Galo and Lio's wedding being stated to be something else; a bunch of staff following deliberate Galo/Lio shipping artists; the writer saying that Burnish aren't supposed to represent sexualities; the list goes on lmfao.)
Was it fujobait? Who knows. Maybe some legendary homo-thirsty masterminds at Trigger had it set up so deliberately gayly the entire time, or maybe all the gay little coinky dinks just happened to perfectly align and fall right into Trigger's hetero lap for them to milk cash from. Anyway, it worked damn well whatever it was, enough for the forsakenly gay "stay with me" line to have admitted English dub screenings in Japan and to have gotten the distributor brand accounts to go tweeting inane stuff like Stay with me Sparkle emoji Flushed emoji Sparkle heart emoji Trails of fire Sparkle heart emoji Flushed emoji. And Galolio itself has definitely fed some population of fujoshis and regular fanartists for a fat year and counting. So much for the ¥1.5 billion, Trigger, you bastards.
In the end, how you're going to choose to take this is up to you. Maybe its gay. Maybe it isn't. (Note: if you're homophobic, that automatically means they're gay.) There's a Parnassus's worth of convoluted leads suggesting it could be either. And maybe it's a mix. And honestly, if two anime guys touching lipsies is getting you pressed over the movie, whoever you are, just remember that it isn't the defining feature of the entire damn movie and you've seriously got to learn to ignore it. Promare is a badass, awesome, and amazing film worth so much more than the ship between the two dudes you see holding hands in fanart on your Twitter timeline. For Trigger's sake, watch Promare, yell about Promare, criticize Promare for its trash screenplay. Please just remember that its not just gay kiss movie.

Ngl i feel like the **SPOILER** Galolio kiss wasn’t that surprising??? That one scene where it showed magic cpr kinda foreshadowed it to me. None of the main female cast were Burnish, and only Burnish we saw regularly was Lio, sooooo
Also I object to people saying Aina and Galo had more romance. Like??? Literally their only romantic scene was when she followed him to the iced lake, and even then the romance is rather one-sided on Aina’s part ://

I'm actually EXTREMLY thankful and happy Lio turned out to be a guy, it makes it so much better story wise and character wise. Besides, the symbolism and meanings behind the songs and animation style wouldn't make any sense if Lio turned out to be a girl

But what IS a good comparison for the two is where Trigger stands when both were made. LWA, they were just getting started after KLK being their first work.
Now fast forward, their first feature film is getting rave reviews. All their work (and insanity pills) paid off 👍

Just got done watching the dub premiere and I thought it was absolutely amazing! I absolutely loved every second of it!

Watched it last night subed in a US theater. I really liked it! and will probably watch it again. My sister is watching it a 3rd time on Saturday

I like Trigger Studio's work and Kill la Kill or Little Witch Academia are my one of the favourite animes, that I didn't feel anything to this title. Nothing like "oh! I have to watch it!" or "I can't wait to see next episode next week!"
So now I know thi is a movie and I can watch it in one evening, I'm sure will watch it.

Just finished watching it in America. Will agree with you that the story is 100% predictable. But. The animation. Man. The animation was hands downs amazing. Definitely right that you need to watch it on the big screen. A regular TV just wouldn't do it justice.

I gota admit most of the characters didn't really get the spot light much, and i feel like the story is kinda... Missing somethings but my most concerns are : WHAT'S WITH THE RAT?!
Yeah, I just watched it. The colors are beautiful, the songs are fun, the action sequences have way too many angle changes in my opinion (it was rather hard to keep up) but are still impressive...I just wish they had a bit more slow moments. Galo was actually tolerable as he is very self aware about his flaws, yet is the optimist with his few slow moments being the one who helps others cool off. I wish that they fleshed out the characters more, they all seem so interesting. I wish I learned more of Lio, as we only have a vauge idea on what they have done to him, we don't know anything of his past, just the present, we don't know how his closest friends met and how he became a leader.

In Space Patrol Luluco main character turn into a Miss Trigger, one of the Trigger girls. On the last episode Nova said there will be second and third (probably other Trigger girls). If any of Trigger girl enter the Promare? (probably Spring, because character design of Lucia is very similar to Spring)

I think my expectations where set a bit too high. I heard so many good things and then after watching it I just felt like it was trying to live up to previous Trigger projects but never reaching their heights. The problem really comes down to the characters not having enough time to develop and the cg animation that failed more often than it succeeded. Anyways it's worth a watch but it's not a must watch. Definitely watch Gurren Lagann instead if you haven't already.
