"Metronomes are also good at inducing panic in people because they make you get things done at a consistent pace! If you are one of those (many!) people that are quite inconsistent with your One- Minute changes, a small amount of time doing the changes with the metronome might well help you sort that out. Playing along and making sure you hit a chord with every click (or every second click) is a really good way of developing your internal rhythm (and panic control!)." - From Justin's website.

Another awesome device for learning guitar is the loop station. Playing with a loop is like playing with a metronome, but you get the added benefit of laying down tracks to practice with (which is good recording practice as well).

  • @rotateman

i'm no teacher, but it probably wouldn't hurt, especially for a "forcing the change" type scenario. By limiting how long you have to make your change (by the next metronome click, for example) you can actually make your switches quicker than if you had no time limit.

A metronome app, you mean? Justin actually has one of those on his website! It's near the top of the page, next to the search bar. If you're looking for a mobile app, just check your respective app store, there's loads of things like that.
/EDIT: Actually, Justin's got you covered regarding mobile apps, too, I noticed. Just check out the notes to this lesson on his website, he mentions that there.

I have this exact metronome, but when I am practicing fast runs in say 3's or 4's I always set it to 1 beat. Because if I set it to 3 beats and I am playing in triplets I am not sure if that means I play one note every click or not, it gets very confusing.
