- Today we meet Toby who is a young guy who has decided to live life rather than be a cog in a man-eating machine. The problem is, that in this country you MUST have a job to make some money--you can't live without it.

Thanks for watching!
I work nights, it can sometimes be draining but it is way better than dealing with hordes of people.
Your a great interviewer! Good at giving the person you talk with leading questions to keep the ball rolling, but not leading in the negative sense just getting them to say what you want. Very nice.

I've followed Tobyintransit for awhile now. Tells a great story and keeps true to minimalist values.
There are so many seasonal jobs in remote non-tourist locations. Firefighting, seasonal fisheries management, BLM, DNR, Forest service. A lot of them have health benfits too so you can get your yearly checkup and dentist visits. Also the pay is usually close to $20 with overtime. Often higher.
How would I find forest service jobs
If you want a longer term night job a good one to look for is babysitting servers. Most places that do server hosting will want one person for the night shift to be able to physically reset a server when needed and be able to call in the person that is needed in an emergency as server down time costs them.
Each company can have a unique name for the position so it is one you just have to be on the look out for but can use the hosting company names to help find them. Great for if you are recovering from an injury and need to stick to an area for what ever reason.
Jackson is a beautiful town. Spent one night there on our way home from Yellowstone. Can't wait to go back.
Thanks -- good to know. :-)
There is a utuber named Susi Cruz. She uploaded a viedo today telling us how her van she lives in was hit by a drunk driver. I was hoping you could look her up and possibly help her with your van give aways. If i were rich id set her up in a new van with money to convert it. Im as broke as can be.
Jobs are great in Jackson, WY, but housing is a complete nightmare. Tourism is the reason so many jobs are available in such a small town, but the fact that Jackson can't house the workforce required to fill those empty positions is why so many *remain* empty. If you go there looking for a job, plan on living in your vehicle or camping whether you're a nomad or not. 10,000 residents in the winter...60,000 in the summer...PLUS many, many thousands of tourists daily. Wonderful area, amazing land, but town is enjoyable for only a few hours at a time.
touchnova - great point, the key is to look for a job that offers housing and they are out there, even in Jackson WY.
Why is housing a concern if you are a full time RV'r? I thought that was the point. My wife and I toured Yellowstone and Jackson Hole a few years ago in September. We camped two nights outside of Jackson (10 minutes) in view of the beautiful mountains on NF land. FREE and no hassle . More recently, I stayed at a beautiful NF campground in SW Virginia. The host was retired and a full time RV'r. He said the company he works for contracts with the NF Bureau and is begging for hosts. This particular campground has 80 sites. He gets paid, two days off a week, a free site with power, and dump facility, Bath house, free fire wood, clean water. They are short two hosts. He said he will be there till Oct. and then will host in Ala, or Fla.
William Branham - great reminder that campground hosting is a ggod job for rvers. Not all seasonal workers have an RV, so would need housing. Campsites may be more difficult to find during the busy summer season. Good to know you found a nice spot in Sept.
touchnova Sounds perfect for me!
Noreen N I don't need housing.
A few weeks ago I bought a Chevy Astro Van. I plan on living in my van very soon.
Great info! I myself am looking to get back into it. We have a guy that lives in our parking lot at Amazon when he works and leaves on his weekends
Having your own place to live gives you a big advantage in all of these out-of-the-way places.
I'm a cook and I've been thinking about getting into the nomad/van life but I wasn't sure how easy it would be to get temp work out of my "home state". This gives me hope!
The national parks are always desperate for workers, all summer. Food and campsite or dorm room are cheap-typically $200 a month total. After your contract is up, as long as you can document looking for work you can collect unemployment. But working the summer, you can make enough to last the winter, if you’re frugal.
SoCalGal what do they typically do during the summer?
That’s pretty good pay for being at a front desk all night. I worked nights for a few years and I found it easier to adapt to if I stayed up till 4am on my nights off instead of trying to go back to a daytime schedule. My sleep was better. It might be a little tough in the summer if you’re not in a cooler climate.
It's nice to see that you are informative about life on the road.
We do need to make money and depending on your lifestyle you can work enough to get by or more to get what you need. thanks for sharing your thoughts guys.
The campground is STANDING BEAR. This is just one of several hosted campground in the area. Good luck.
I really enjoyed this video. Great information. Thanks Bob
2021- Walmart paying up to17.50 overnight- seasonal work- looking into transferring to another state with work waiting upon arrival. You can easily take long periods of time off. I'm in Philly and currently working at Walmart 16.00 an hour day time saving for a van. To build the van I will have to move into it first and take my rent to pay for the build. I was thinking of going overnite, City park during the day to cook and sleep, Park at Walmart overnight while working so the van is safe at night, Bathrooms available during the day and night, planet fitness in the same parking lot for showers. I see working overnight in a City to be the safest and easiest way.
Excellent insightful content! Thanks for bringing us this news from the unreported day-in-the-life of law-abiding transient/nomadic Americans..
Seems like yesterday that we were all together at the RTR. Thanks for everything, Bob. I work full-time as a freelance writer on the road, if you ever want to do a video about that.
Would love info about the freelance writing you do! Please share it on your OWN channel! I love Bob's videos and information but you should share it yourself! :)
Chuck Taylor Sounds like a plan. I'll add it to my list of upcoming projects.
in order to qualify for unemployment benefits you must have worked continually for the prior 18-24 months leading up to your becoming unemployed. you can't qualify for benefits for 3months seasonal work unless you work the other 9 months of the year, in other words you can't work 3 Months a year and collect unemployment the rest of the year
Just the video I needed to see right now. Thank you.
It's good to see someone enjoying life living on thier own terms.
I disagree. Stocking shelves at Wal-Mart is not one term of an enjoyable life- at least not my life.
William Branham I was referring to the fact that he works as needed not the the type of work, he said he only works 5 months out of a year. His own terms are he only works as much as he needs to based on a budget he created on his own terms. He is not a slave to a high mortgage, High rent, consumerism, or jobs that mandate you to live according to thier needs. If you can't understand my simple point I can't help you.
Ernest Rountree Wow Ernest, I missed your point completely. Thanks man.
William Branham Your Welcome sir.
I got such a valuable information from this video, that I have not heard on other videos! Thank you so much!
What I don't understand is why so many negative comments....you watched this WHY?!? Deep down there's a whole 💖
nice burgundy matching shirts , yes we are a bunch of rats racing each other , at the end its what makes us happy :) I love your videos Bob!
Is it really what makes us happy? Are you sure of that?
U Haul has VR Customer Service Work available until middle of September.
Bob can you do a video on the facts of weapons carry .Here in Tennessee it's open carry as long as there isn't any signs saying no weapons allowed but otherwise it's open carry .Also you cannot carry on federal property except State Parks . I think this is a very serious topic
Sounds like fun but I do have one concern. People living this lifestyle will not have contributed much to their social security benefits which will almost force them to work until they die.
Depends on how much you spend each month. Toby averages $750. It doesn't take much earnings over your life time to create a SS benefit of that much. I was a business owner that went for years without paying myself any payroll, and when I did, I only paid myself minimum wage. I did collect rent, so I had an income, but rental income doesn't have social security taxes taken out. Anyway, even though my life time SS applicable earnings was spotty and low, I'll get about what Toby needs when it is my time to collect.
Depends upon his age I think. If he is young enough, they are saying social security won't be around. Most of the young people I talk to are not counting on that so many are working multiple jobs and trying to put as much away as possible. In his case, I agree. He is not making much to be able to put aside for the future.
I heard the same thing in 1970, now I am 1 year away and I do believe I am getting it. Do not believe the BS.
The Senior Thrifter, you nailed it! If he doesn't earn much during his working lifetime he won't have the capacity to put money aside for retirement and he also will not have contributed enough into Social Security to get back enough live on in retirement. That scenario would force him to work until he dies.
Charlie the Tuna, I certainly hope that Social Security stays because I believe that it is a good program. The danger is that the Republican party would like to dissolve Social Security. The problem this young man has is that by only working part time and paying little into Social Security he will get little out when he is ready to retire and that could force him to have to work until he dies unless he changes his employment habits.
Thanks Bob, "useful information in this video"👍🏻
Your interviewing skills are extraordinary as it's not about your ego as it is about eliciting information that will serve your audience. It's too bad your style isn't present in modern-day politics. Your interviewing skills would truly go a long way towards informing the voters as opposed to agenda driven interviews. Like the channel keep up the good work.
Thanks Toby!
Bob, can you do a video sometime about what to do for health insurance? Thanks.
Very informative. Thanks again for the great work you do Bob.
Plasma donation is a good one too if they'd ever change their policy that you have to be living in a traditional home. I was going to do that but was told that I needed proof (had to show a utility bill) showing I was living in a traditional home. They won't accept anyone mobile. When I asked the reason why she said in case we need to get in touch with you. I said you have my phone # & email. She said they wouldnt do it like that.
Great video - getting ready to take off with my newly converted skoolie. Cheers
Thanks for sharing, to both of you.
You have talked before about the sugar beet harvest, I found out today you can't work it sleeping in a van or tent ,you must have a camper, how do vandwellers work there then???
Thanks for great tips on jobs. I will check out Toby's Channel.
In order to collect unemployment legally you have to be available to work. If there are jobs available you are supposed to take it. Also, if you quit a job you don't qualify for unemployment benefits
Maggie M. State laws vary. If you're expected to take any job then telemarket those magazines!
Thanks Bob..great interview
menofairy Yes it was
We all only need to become nomad fams!
Very interesting video. I guess places that have a lot of tourists probably have work for temp. nurses as well. The major expense would be getting a license in that state.
I think I am right in saying this. Agencies that hire temp. medical staff will often pay the license fee.
Very nice Bob
Sounds like a great idea! Think I will look into this!
*QUESTION:* how do you get jobs when you know you'll only be there a short time? And what do you say when they see your work history and ask if you plan on leaving like you have on the other jobs? I find employers aren't likely to hire a guy that job hops.
Google workamping
Heather Applegate I've looked at some of those, but I've wanted to do night auditor and similar jobs he talked about here. Most employers don't want to spend time and money to train you and then see you leave right afterwards.
Sourcedrop you look for ones in tourist destinations that are really only open seasonally or specifically hire temps for the high season (ski resort towns in winter for example). Another job I did was as a merchandiser in the garden center of home depot. The flower suppliers hire for the high season. Lowes, Home Depot, walmart...etc. All of them have outside vendors for this, usually 2-3 flower or shrub compankes per store. Loads of those jobs on craigslist.
Sourcedrop Excellent question
Heather Applegate Yep
Hello Bob. Lots of good information for the workforce. I think a job on the road would be good for those who can and who want to. The money would come in handy for anybody trying to live on the road. By the way, how is Dee doing?? I hope everything works out for her. Be safe in your journeys and bye for now.
Very informative!
Christine Lowery -Beachcricket I agree
What is a solution for the heat during the day if you live in a van? Surely someone has thought of something?
Great information guys. Thank you!
Thank you very much. Helpful info
Great video! I always learn so much.
However you have to have a residential address to place on an jjob application.
Is it hard to get under the table job's in Jackson?
Thanks so much BoB!
Informative. Thanks!
Don’t forget about Uber Eats, or Uber...great to have if traveling...
nice video. Bob where did you get that hair wrap, bandana thing? Did you post a link please?
Cindy Bryant It’s called a “hoorag” 😎
Or a Buff
Try Amazon. Toby can send it to you when he's at the Amazon Fulfillment Center.
Im just wondering how you explain the gaps in unemployment in your resume, especially if there are 2 or 3 per year, lasting months at a time?
Would like to see the interview with Toby and his Transit Connect...does anyone have the link to that. Searching on this channel for "Toby" or "Transit Connect" doesn't find it. Thanks!
Do you have any informational video links on cheap RV living in Canada? My husband and I are seriously thinking of selling our home to enjoy our retirement years. I have health issues and cannot RV in the USA.
How is it costing people so much money to live in a van? My expenses sticks and bricks is only 800 a month. Smh
I get almost 1000 dollars a Mtn from s s disability I am going to try to do as much free camping as I can The places you can stay at for up to 14 days and II want to do some boon docking camping also. Seeing that I won’t be doing a lot of driving I should be able to live good with that amount of money I also have Medicare so I shouldn’t have any problem getting medical help living out on the road getting a Chevy Astro van to put all my stuff in and they get really good gas mileage all I will be paying in the way of bills is my phone.vehicle insurance and then food and gas
Ty both....great info 💞
Good info Bob
Bob you have never mentioned the ass I talk about it on my channel Lyft you can drive all over the country if you just pull your little car behind your RV or van That way you can work when you want or when you need gas money or my money for food and still travel all the most awesome places as you want to
Great video thanks God bless brother

9:50. uuh, then who is knocking on my van when I'm working.
Thanks!
Are there any jobs for licensed massage therapists out there in nomad land
What is cool works?
Nice. Night Auditor.$15 - $18 per hr.
Live Free or Die in my area night auditor is minimum wage in a beautiful resort a re area $1000 min rent if you have no rv yet.
Bargain Holic What area is that?
Where Bob is right now, the Eastern High Sierra. No Walmart or Dollar store for hours!
Local concrete driver could make over $20 with a room. Rare but good opportunity for right person.
Bargain Holic Nice
@Toby- Good 4 U. Taking the unemployment opens a person up to so much scrutiny & it's almost impossible to get them on the phone to open the case to begin with! I think it's designed to force people onto the welfare system while they wait for that first check & have no other way to support themselves. So, I think it was smart to get another job & go on with living on your own terms!
I am a night Audit and draw Social Security and I have plenty of time to watch you tube
Night Auditors have been keeping this secret FOR YEARS!! Don't tell people it's easy!
Sheesh! LoL.
It IS possible NOT TO GET HIRED IN jackson wyoming..... every single place (38) i applied for nights n days...n I didnt get anything.
Im well dressed n well spoken....
Im bi-lingual (english n spanish)..... im also mexican.
Lets just say..... Jackson, Wyoming mentality is still in the mindset of the 1930s....racists!
Sorry to hear that, we are not all like that.
@Norma Jean- I thought it was bad in Northern California. Shasta County is only stuck in the 50's & 60's! They hate anyone who isn't white & undereducated! It's a shithole of white supremacy inbreds. Many are from Wyoming!
There are many, many Hispanics that work in and around Jackson. I worked 25 years in Wyoming along side quite a few intelligent, hard-working Hispanics.
Sherry Dee its ashame. Especially when I was walking around....ppl would stare....or say to ppl their with "ICE needs to be here n deport these illegals".
Its a shame.... I kind of laugh when they say this is their land. In case they dnt know their history....EVERYONE is an immigrant.
John Tricola u sure they werent Native American ..... we do tend to look alike because of our ancestors...
Regardless as you can tell by comments....im not the only one to have experienced this so its def not an isolated incident.
Its a damn shame that with this president.....the undercover racists (becuz lets face it..... they were hiding their racist antics) have felt liberated into showing it n feel comfortable doing so.
Its a shame in 2018 we have diverted back.....
more and more people will become domain name investors eg buying website addresses that sit on the digital shelf for investment or can be sold to businesses and they only cost £15 if bought at godaddy etc at cost price
every single day there is a list of 100 website addresses sold yesterday and the prices they sold for and the market place they were sold at
Plus many people are becoming day traders
Eg day trading the stockmarket from their phone
Eg day trading forex eg bitcoin price etc
Toby!!!!
where is Jackson
Google it.
It’s in western Wyoming. Also called Jackson Hole Wyoming. It’s right next to the Grand Teton national Park, Island Park and Yellowstone national park.
👍👍 thumbs
I love night shift.....lol.
Second 3
A lady can sell her cat just about anywhere.
Kevin Hornbuckle What?
Mrs Elephant OKAY! Thanks! I have two cats and am too focused on the real thing to think outside the box!
+Mrs Elephant I don't insist upon any such thing. I simply indicated its existence.
@Mrs Elephant It is the oldest profession after all.
I think every guy has taught about that lol. How convenient for females. Younger females that is
First
..no one cares..
Love that hat scarf you are wearing, Bob..!Yes younger folks have to work. Even more,
Wow! Congratulations!!!!! What an honor!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I guess Bobs father should of ran away from his job and responsibilities of taking care of his family ! Some people look at life in different direction and not necessarily agree with a frivolous way of life (Bob) ! Thank goodness fireman , EMT’s and doctors don’t think like you , who would work at the refinery to manufacture the gasoline that you require for that creeper van !
Bob doesn't have children and is not married.
