- Lord Merton finally plucks up his courage and lets his feelings for Mrs. Crawley be known.
We have to admit that it was very sweet when he said loud and clear that he was deeply in love with Isobel.
A proposal to remember.
From season 5 episode 4: The Countess confesses her past with Prince Kuragin, Lord Merton proposes to Isobel, Rose's parents are divorcing, Lord Grantham becomes jealous of Simon, and Lady Mary tells Gillingham she won't marry him.

How could any lady refuse such a charming offer from a gentleman who dresses as well as he behaves.
What a dashing couple❤️
Preferred Dr Clarkson
She's too used to the freedom that comes with being a widow.
I totally agree! What a proposal!
There's no way on earth I could refuse such a charming and sweet proposal. I'd have been swept off my feet! I'm soooo glad they did eventually marry!
Lord Merton, the epitome of an English gentleman. His chemistry with Isobel Crawley was perfection. What a handsome couple!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gentleman
He is the best. He never does anything petty and never says a bad word about anyone.
Ugh I just love them together. I hope to be as sophisticated as he is at that age.
He is so lovely!!! If only his sons weren't so terrible
@Quaker 2019 oh yes indeed
Lord Merton didn’t receive nearly enough airtime, but what he did get was enough to make me fall in love with him. If only Matthew had known him, and many viewers forget he was Mary’s godfather. What a beautiful proposal, and at least he and Isobel finally got their happy ending!
I think if Matthew was alive, he would have like Lord Merton and see him as a equal to his father. He would stand up against Tim and Larry just to protected her.
They sit down and Isobel says simply, "How can I help?"
This sums up her character like nothing else.
NAILED IT.
Would’ve loved to have seen Matthew’s reaction to this. He would probably be thrilled and supportive and happy for his mother. And I’m sure he’d have gotten along with Lord Merton swimmingly and also been rooting for him quietly
I agree, Matthew would have loved Lord Merton as a father-in-law. They have a similar sense of humor, would have gotten along easily.
@@rowanaforrest9792 father in law?
Oh, right, I meant step-father. Thanks!
He also would have helped his mother stand up to Lord Merton’s terrible children.
@@suncore598they probablt wouldnt have dared insult her had he been alive. But theyre a bunch of cowards who inly dared slander when he cant figut back
I am happy Isobel met him and genuinly liked him, if anyone deserves love its her
Golden Rose I kind of agree but I always thought her & dr. Clarkson would’ve made a great couple.
@@maryannlockwood7806 same I kinda liked her more with him to be honest. But Isobel doesnt. Plus they do have great chemistry, which allot of post season 3 couples lacked.
I agree :) They are great together!
Me too . Dr Clarkson is just a tad too restrictive for the bigness of heart and mind of Isabel.
I love how he didn't pressure her for an answer like so many do when they offer a proposal. He allowed her time to really internalize things and make a decision in her own time. A true gentleman.
He had me at: "I really should go down on one knee, but I fear I'd never get up again."
I'll admit it, I swooned 🥰❣
The most heartfelt proposal ever!
Yes I'm that old! Lol!
I don't have an emoji for that! Lol!
Is romance of this kind dead forever? I pray not 🙏❣
I did too!!!
I was intrigued as soon as he said "You may regret it but I won't!" Like he had made his mind up to just do it regardless of the outcome he was proud that he'd finally found the courage to put himself out there.
I had thought for sure he was going to kiss her hand before he left. 🥰
Yes, romance of this kind is still alive. I'm older than you and it happened to me.
its rare, but it's always been very special.
Many proposals in this show, but this ranks for me among the sweetest, most beautiful ones 💗 How could such a honorable, good man have such vile, cruel, obnoxious sons? But at least he and Isobel got to be together in the end.
Horrible wife, it is often mentioned that they were nothing alike.
"They take after their mother, in every sense of the word." - Lord Merton
I believe Lord Merton said that they took after their mother .. That was after the disasterous dinner when the sons were kicked out of Downton
@@chanaberlove8720 It must have been rough for him being married to her.
I do wish Downton Abbey had shown just a bit of their wedding service, even if it was just a quick shot of them walking out of a church, her with a bouquet, both looking at each other smiling, and then kissing.
I agree would have been a lovely scene..and the boquet in this scene is simply amazing! Florists of the highest caliber of excellence obviously!
That would have been so sweet!!
"I state freely and proudly that I have fallen in Love with you."
You had me at " Freely, Proudly and Love" 💕!!
Younger generations should learn how to make a decent proposal like Lord Merton, in my opinion. Simple yet classy.
There is no passion
Ok
I’m torn. Seems these days proposals come in two forms: grand, limelight hogging gestures, and thoroughly businesslike transactions. Sometimes a show is made of the former at the end of the latter. I prefer Merton’s modest directness to something flashy, but I think I prefer a mutual decision shorn of all sentimentality altogether to springing such an offer on an unsuspecting woman out of the blue.
I have to agree. A friend of mine more or less proposed for her husband-to-be to herself "i really think we should get married.. You think so? ... Yes" and accepted her own proposal. 🙄 He just had to insert the "You think so". They had two children together by the time and were living together, so the marriage was only a formality at the time, but still.. that could have gone better.
Dang if someone proposed to me like this I'd literally be the happiest girl. This was literally the sweetest proposal out of the whole show. Let's be honest both of them deserved this happy ending more than anyone in the show.
same!! I’d totally swoon❤
Man was smooth as butter holy fuvk
Can we please talk about the music being perfectly cued to the door knocker?? All hail the behind the scenes heroes!
I loved his character, he was so sweet! I thought they were very cute together
“To refuse your request after such eloquence would be ungenerous...”
His gasping anxious breaths out of nerves is so adorable 🥰
I absolutely love Lord Merton and Isobel Crawley! His proposal is so sweet! This is one of my all time favorite scenes! It is very well done!
Now that is a marriage proposal and a statement of love.
Such elegance, and class. He, absolutely knew his audience, and the best way to get inside her walls, and coax from within her an answer which surprised her...
I love these two. What a wonderful character Isobel is... by far, my favourite from Downton Abbey.
I love these two and am happy that they found each other, but the Dowager Countess will always be my favorite character.
Not only is Isobel a character in the series, but she is an exemplar of "character". Always mindful of others, yet always true to herself.
The class and elegance of this amazing scene is sadly going to be so drastically overlooked by so many who could truly benefit from it's true charm and priceless beauty. If only they had hearts and eyes to see what temporal materlistic vanity blinds them from.
Thank you for creating something so priceless and brilliant with these two wonderfully talented people.
Dignity, grace, courtesy. **THAT**, boys and girls, is a real gentleman.
I wish I had that dignity and grace. I like to think I'm courteous to those deserving of it. God knows I try to be.
by far this is the best proposal in any TV shows I've watched, ever.
Lord Merton is one of the best characters on this show.
What a class act he is. And Mrs. Crawley.....a lovely person indeed.
My favorite love stories in Downtown Abbey are Edith & Bertie, and Isobel & Dickie. Both are lovely stories with real heart!
Older and wiser he simply adores her for who she is and I love ❤️ it !!!!!!!!💖💕❤️
Gets me every time. One of the finest speeches in the whole series.
"But my proposal is a romantic one." 💞
Not gonna lie, I was disappointed when she refused Dr Clarkson but then this man came along. They’re so lovely together
One of my favourite of the couples in this series. So gentle and romantic.
He's like a puppy! (I mean that as a compliment) He's just so enthusiastic and wholly focused on her, wanting her to be happy with him.
I love this proposal so much. It brought a tear to my eye. How sweet. And his face when she said she would think about it. ☺️🥰 All the feels.
When i saw this scene, i had to pause and scream with delight. It’s the cutest and best proposal in this show.
This is a beautiful proposal. so sweet and genuine.
I LOVE THIS SCENE. SIMPLE YET ROMANTIC. HAPPY THAT THEY ENDED UP TOGETHER.
Lord Merton is a true gentleman. I love this scene. One of my favorites scenes in the series. Super romantic. Love the characters. I wish I could see them say I do.
I am so happy they got together despite his children’s attitude. God bless.
This series just always knew how to make the most romantic and beautiful proposals. No matter who it was.
Awww. I’m done. I can’t handle anymore of this 😭😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
what a beautiful moving scene...
He really was a sweet and wonderful man.
A beautiful proposal.. M crying..
Such a lovely man.
Such a lovely proposal with a lovely couple.
The most beautiful, real and heartfelt proposal!
How could anyone dislike this?
Ask to Lord Merton's son.
Sometimes I think the best storyline in Downton Abbey is the ones that isn't Mary focussed.
The way her eyes just widen in shock! 😭
Truly great love stories can come at any age if written and acted right. Both of them were stellar and il fully admit i get giddy everytime they interact its the sweetest thing, and the way he stands up for the crawleys against his horrid sons time after time. Hes not just a gentleman, he is a truly gentle man
I'm here after seeing the film for the first time yesterday. These two are so cute!! 💗
Sutch a fantastic acting job from both of them.
Little secret here, he was one of favorite characters of this show
This and Carson's proposal were the best in the show! \
I am so happy for her
This is so superbly acted, the facial gestures exactly right. It must have been very difficult to do.
This is beautiful!
I'd love to spend an afternoon with Lord Merton.
Such an awkward but well-spoken and seemingly intelligent fellow.
Just like myself, I like to think.
0:15 amazing atmosphere creation... not so subtle, but, so appropriate.
Favourite show ❤️
I loved that they ended up together. So well suited! 🥰
She's a fool. He is a passionate romantic gentleman. And quite attractive too!
saa82vik why is Isobel a fool?
@@thomaspage869 She's not. She seriously considered turning down his proposal, but decided to accept it. It was Lord Merton's rot-hearted sons who ruined that for a while, but eventually Isobel and Lord Merton did marry.
@Quaker 2019 True! Larry and Amelia were a perfect match -- equally vile in all the same ways. But the handwriting is on the wall: When the time comes when one of them is in failing health and needs the other to be patient and kind, they'll get selfishness and cold scheming instead.
The greatest show ever made
I remember after this aired seeing on a message board people just posting “say yes Isobel!” ❤
What a great script and incredible acting!
So sweet!.
I agree that was a nice proposal but I thought she should have given Dr Clarkson a chance. I know they had a rocky start but they became friends. Mary was right when she said you spend very little time with a person before you decide to spend the rest of your life with them. She barely knows this guy. But that's how they did it back in those days.
I do think her and Dr. Clarkson would have been a good fit but maybe they did it to show that women can still have wonderful friendships with people of the opposite gender. Especially at this time period where the genders were so separated.
She didn't love Dr Clarkson and he found her exasperating. Plus, the actor who played Clarkson didn't want to be involved in any love story. His wife had just committed suicide.
@@ChristineTheHippie Isobel turned Dr Clarkson down so I get that; she was not interested. But accepting a proposal from a man she barely knew is what I don't get. I never knew actors had any say in what happens in the story line. My granny was right; you learn something new everyday.
@@ChristineTheHippie What??? Really? The actor's wife had just committed suicide?
Well, there is that thing called "chemistry." She had it with Lord Merton. She didn't have it with Dr. Clarkson. With Clarkson, she came off as a rival. Yes, they eventually became friends, but at the beginning, they butted heads. She was the wife of a physician. Dr. Clarkson was a physician. She had some knowledge of medicine, but she was not his medical equal. She had to come to realize that Dr. Clarkson wasn't an ignorant country doctor. He had to come to realize that she did have some medical knowledge and skill that was useful.
never is too late
How sweet is that! Every lady's dream!❤❤❤He proposed to every woman in the audience....and I accept....LOL!
He's a cutie, if she doesn't marry him I will :)
Love these two!!
This makes me want her to say yes on the spot.
What a beautiful moment
Too cute..
They are so cute
Love Lord Merton. Mrs Crawley is lovely too.
Well in only this case, grandma indeed. ❤
Back to season one downton abbey!!
1st like!
By the way: Downton Abbey is my FAVORITE SHOW!!!!!!
Can you do some clips from the new movie?
Genesis Flowers charades you say?
Lindalee Law
???? Confusion
@@lydiasmith3825 The movie is the most boring claptrap, ever! 😂
Merton was a good man. A mensch
Well if nothing else, the man had absolutely *flawless* taste in women.
I feel like crying that was so moving. I’ll marry him!!
Real love knows no class upbringing status or monetary worth and the fact they are and wiser
Grazie 💐✨ bello!
How posh people still propose to this day in the UK.
Then I would love to be the posh in uk just to get proposed as I should
I'm neither British nor posh, but I find this proposal infinitely more charming and irresistible than the modern over-the-top contrived type. Simple, classy, and soooo heartfelt. I couldn't resist such a proposal!
@@rowanaforrest9792 Right aha! The flattery would lift me off my heels.
@@jhtang5441 Yes! :D The other thing I love about all the marriage proposals on Downton is that the man doesn't expect an immediate answer. He always gives her time to think about it. I think that's better and more considerate than how it's often done nowadays, popping the question in public and expecting an immediate answer. That's intended to be romantic, but I think it puts the woman on the spot, which she may not like.
I imagine Douglas Reith to be a true gent
Douglas Reith is my neighbor 😉
@@lereal9111 Neighbour
2 young souls trapped in an old body .
yes indeed
Great Scene!
Oh, Isobel, for God's sake
Never had a proposal. 🙄 it must be nice.
Isobel loved her independence until she met him. But the sons did not want to share the estate so they ran her off. Luckily she changed her mind just in time. A real love story.
Young men need to study this.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
I don't think I could ever accept a proposal from a man without a first name.
Richard, whom his friends (including Isobel) call Dickie.
If a man proposed to me in those tweeds, I wouldn’t be able to refuse.
Lord Merton deserves happiness after living with his unlikable wife and her two male dopplgangers known as Larry and Tim. I can see him being the cool grandpa to George. Robert may also be a fun grandfather, but George will eventually take over the Grantham Estate. With Lord Merton, party time with Grandpa.
I wish men, both young and old, dressed like this today. I loathe the sloppy attire most wear today. And where did anyone this it was okay to wear pajamas or sloppy pants or pants below one's underwear.
Indeed!. I just don't understand the idea of half of a man's undershorts and butt rising above the supposed waistband of his jeans.
It looks ridiculous and is rude and crude.
@@emdee7744 All that, plus it looks like the man has no self respect.
