Well this was a little close for comfort! While fishing off the East Cape of New Zealand, I crossed paths with this feeding shark - it was either a great white or a mako... I'm still not 100% sure. The distance I had between myself and the shark was quickly closed when the seal decided my kayak would be a good hiding spot 😂 while I'm glad to have come away unscathed, this was a truly thrilling experience.

Haha you're crazy getting that close to all that. I would've been worried about the seals jumping on the kayak for shelter

I thought it was bluefin! I was going full noise towards them until I was about 100m away and I realised what was going on. Pretty much stayed about 50-100m away until the seal rushed towards the kayak. Video doesn't portray the distance well. Also I didn't anticipate it hiding under the kayak! In hindsight that seems obvious though.

luckily wasn’t a full grown white. looks to be a juvenile white or maybe another similar lamnid species, such as the obvious candidate mako.

Good stuff my man! Glad you made it out of there in one piece. I wonder if the shark got the seal or if the seal got lucky that you distracted the shark and it got away? Definitely a memory that will have you pulling your feet in under the covers at night :-)

In a boating school they teach you ( but many seem to ignore it ) that if you see a shark attacking something ….get the fudge away ….they go into a frenzy they will attack the seal themselves…other sharks and you….a good rule of thumb is if you see a whale keep 1km away if possible …stay away from dolphins even though they seem cool…and as soon as you see a shark chasing …haul ass fast away from the aoe at least temporarily until the feeding is done …you are just very very lucky that didn’t end bad it really could have man

Indeed it’s a juvenile, Amazing footage ‘ you had hell of luck, same thing happened to Roy J. Stoddard et Tamara McAllister, near a seal colony, GW was bigger than this one, a notorious attack they didn’t have your luck ‘ glad you re safe though ‘ thanks to being such images to us though 👍

NZ shark export said it was in fact a Mako not a Great white which makes the footage even more rare. He said had it been a less nibble Great White the shark, the shark would have given up trying get the seal earlier. Fisherman was 10 km off shore at the time. Akin to riding your bike through Kruger National Park and coming across a lion hunting a Wildebeest. Rather him than me.

100% that seal saw your kayak and saw a place where he could possibly jump on and get away from the shark. I've seen videos of seals jumping onto boats to avoid orcas.

Great footage, you really got massive balls to get this close.. I guess it's luck that it was a small juvenile shark that rammed your kayak. If it's much larger great white ( 15-18 ft.), it could really flip your kayak upside down dude.

    • @gpfishingadventures7834

Thanks. I wasn't planning on getting this close to be fair, but when the seal saw me it decided I'd make a good hiding spot 😂 the video doesn't really show it, but I almost was knocked out. I agree if it had been bigger it could've been much worse!

    • @aranha9365

@@aranha9365 thats possible, but in this video that juvenile shark only hit the kayak, with a bigger shark , it doesn't even need to try, it will just hit and the kayak will flip upside down. That's my whole point
