- The Libero has been one of my favorite roles to use in Football Manager for 10 years. But how does it work? Well in today's video we'll go over the basics of the role, both how it does in the attacking and defensive phases of the match.
We'll also look at my Monaco save where I'm running a 343 tactic with a libero in the center of the back 3. The tactic was pretty successful, as the team was able to finish 2nd in the Ligue 1 (you can probably guess who won the league lol.)
And what makes a good libero for your tactic? What kind of attributes do they need? Are they a playmaker role or are they a defender role? That's all covered here.
Then we wrap up the video by looking at a couple of player examples, including the player who was responsible for the libero update in football manager 24.

I never comment on RUclips videos but got to say this is unreal. I have played fm for just over 10 years and watched god knows how many fm videos but I have always struggled knowing exactly what certain roles do, this is unbelievably helpful, can only say thank you and keep it up !

One of my favorite roles of all time. Libero is perfect for modern possession football. I use it in 4-3-3 where Libero becomes a pivot alongside an Anchor and 8s are Roaming Playmaker and Mezzala to form a box midfield. Absolute monster of a tactic
Great suggestion. Very underrated role. He's a great mix of the other midfielders, not to mention his defensive ability.

Although I found Singo and Salisu to be an amazing duo aswell. If Singo isn’t causing havoc on the right, I love the runs he makes as a libero.
Had a nice little 10 game win streak (including a defensive master class in Paris) come to an end with a late salvaged draw against Montpellier, in which their keeper saved 18 shots.
Loving the safe rn and actually one point ahead on PSG 16 games in!

that's awesome! What's the tactic? And I'm actually a little sad they took the attack duty away from the libero in FM24... If I'm using a libero I want him everywhere haha
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymakerthis is actually only my second fm and I played a standard 4-2-3-1 on fm23 so I didn’t even know there was an attacking libero till now haha. The tactic I’m using now is a 5-2-3 with two DMs and three strikers. Double segundo volantes or pairing one with a deep lying playmaker wreaks havoc and it’s a wall defensively conceded only 3 in my last 10 games.
The accent is on the i when you pronounce it 😊 I am using the libero with huge success in a 4 men defense with an inverted fullback on one side and a BPD cover on the other. Give it a try 😉

This was an awesome video. Love the retro vibes you have going with all of them and it's cool seeing a fellow American be an FM content creator. On your Monaco tactic, why not use the WCB on a defend duty? Are they too adventurous of a role?

For the tactic, I find that the WCB like to dribble and like you say they're more ambitious when they're on the ball. Which could/would totally work in the tactic, but for the purposes of the video demonstration I wanted to use the vanilla central defender role so they wouldn't bypass the libero.
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker totally makes sense. Will you be doing a WCB video in the future? I’ve flirted with the attack duty but it’s not a role that I fan wrap my head around.

I was wondering if you could maybe do a video on the target men? So target forward as striker and the wide target forwards. It's nice how they're essentially DLP but also very different at the same time

Another amazing video! Can I make two questions?
1. In my current save I dominate possession and don't allow the opponent to create any chances at all. The only issue I have is scoring the goals. Do you have any tips?
2. Is there any role in FM that you have never used? I can't remember using the Raumdeuter at any version of the game.

1) what is the tactic? And it sounds like you have a solid formation, just might need some small adjustments. My main question is: Are you getting chances and not scoring? Or just not creating any chances at all? It seems that your defense/midfield is set up right, but might need some extra attacking threats up top.
2) I think I've at least tried every role, but I think the wide target man is my least used one. I did a lower league save a couple years ago (can't remember the team) and they had a best wide target man, but other than that I don't really use it haha. So we may be waiting a little bit for that role video XD
Dont feel bad, most players get to that point where you dominate, rack up a high xg but cant seem to get any into the net, here are a few of my tips.
The convention is 5 attackers in the 5 zones, 2 wide, 2 channels, 1 zone. So you may only end up with 1, maybe 2 players in the 6 yard box. when you begin to dominate possession, you usually see packed boxes, so 3/4 defenders, and potentially 2 mids against your 2 players. This is where i see good possession but a lack of real threat.
1. Buy elite( for your level) freekick/corner kick takers. Along with increasing your jumping reach and strength on defense, this can help break the deadlock when your stuck against packed boxes. (See arsenal this season in the EPL).
2a. Shift to a midblock and get 2 central runners. When teams cannot buildup easily, you can take advantage of turnovers in central zones to make quick attacks directly at their box before they set. This can be done with either STK+Am, or 2 fwds, and use the counter out of possession instruction on a balanced mentality. if you use attacking mentality already, then you can just leave that unchecked, as they will still be aggressive regardless.
2b. improve your wide rotations: if your fullbacks or wingers are being shepherded outwide by the oppo fullback and not having many options and either cycling back to a deep mid/cb or just aimless crossing, try using the underlap run instruction on the possession screen and pairing that with an inverted wingback (when you use wingers as your wide forwards) or a mezzala/CM_A when its your fullbacks overlapping. Suddenly either the midfielder goes with the runner or the fb is caught in two minds on who to mark. You dont need to have a ton of overall width with this style, just 2 players who stay wide to either be open for a switch or stretch their backline.
2c. Get ultrawide: This is where you set your width to wide, put your wide forwards at the edge of the touchline to expand the width of their defensive line and using a pinning forward (poach, AF, PF_A,TM_A) to push the backline back. Now you have acres of space for a player to make a late unmarked run into the box by a segundo volante/CM_A/Mezz_A or any support mid with the traits of "gets into oppo area or Gets forward whenever possible" Then the cut back is on.
3 If all else fails, attack with 6 and defend in a tight 4: Sometimes you just need to go for it, so creating a formation with 2 players pushing the backline backwards, and 2 interior late runners, along with your wide players (wingback or wingers) gives them too many options to defend. But its key to create a solid 2+2 defensive shape behind in central zones so you can manage counters, instead of stopping them as is conventional. push them wide and get a good sweeper keeper. So you could use a 4 3 3 as such:

I use a libero in my back 3 but I don't like him central as when he goes forward it leaves a big gap between the other 2 centre backs. I use him either left or right so he steps into midfield alongside a def midfielder

How does a Libero (s) interact with an Anchor Man (d)?
I'm not sure if I've run an anchor man with a libero if I'm honest! I bet the two of them would make a great defensive combo, and probably good for possession based styles too! Were you looking at trying those to together?
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker I don't tend to use either role, and watching the libero swap with the BWM in your demonstration made me wonder about an even more defensive DM role! Just curiosity, plus I want to experiment with tactics more
@@saoirsedeltufo7436 I like using it in combo with any holding dm role, especially if you have aggressive wingbacks. in buildup, the libero steps up alongside to form a solid double pivot and prevent a single AM from marking your #6 out of the game. Then the libero will keep up with the play, while the anchor helps our your other cb or pair to help keep you from being overrun. (however, if you are facing two strikers who pin your cb's, i.e. advanced fwd and poacher, etc. and they dont use an AM, your dm_D type role is totally unmarked in buildup, and i change my libero to a BPD_Cover, so he can help my two cb's or a cb and an IFB_D not be killed on the counter)

Do you think libero is Stones' best position?
He's world class as a ball playing defender too, in addition to the libero. It's hard to find defenders with his playmaking abilities. If you play a back-3 formation, I'd imagine he'd be a great wide centerback too
