      They did, the Zoe, we have one. The main problem was the price was too high here (we got it for $37k when they were running them out instead of the original $54k price). But has been a great little car, Australia so needs some EV options in that size of car. EVDirect are being pretty stupid not bringing in the Seagull. I still maintain BYD needs a better distributor here.

    • @RacingAnt
      @RacingAnt Год назад

      @@ledsalesoz the only model that works is Tesla's direct sales. Importers are greedy. If they can make the same money selling 1,000 cars at $15,000 profit, as 10,000 at $1,500 profit, which are they going to do? I know which one I'd do. Lol 🤣😆
      The only way EV Direct win is over the likes of Hyundai, Kia, Peugeot, etc, where the importers are only interested in maintaining their ICE sales and profits, so price the EVs out of contention.

      16k GBP is 20k USD. Even at less than half the cost of the average new car (48k USD) I don't see it selling well here. It's too small and will be heavier, reducing range, and much more expensive when beefed up to meet our safety standards. So heavy, slow, limited range and space for not much less than much more capable vehicles.

    Love the exterior styling. Interior and some of the colors you showed, not so sure... Agree with others here that the Seagull would be a huge hit in much of the world (US included) at the price you mentioned. I don't think it will support supercharging given its price, but imagine if could. Its' max range may only be 180-200 miles, but with supercharging and it's small battery pack, it could charge from near zero to 80% in 10 minutes or less, making long-range trips plausible.
    I'm not a pink color guy in general, but I agree that the particular shade shown in the vid is more tolerable that most.

    • @jimwavect

      Why do people think that you can just import something like this to the US at the same price as China? They would only send the version with the largest battery and then there's shipping and the additional 27.5% tariff. By the time it gets here, it would cost the same as a Chevy Bolt with more power, longer range and it's eligible for the $7500 tax credit.

    Would absolutely buy one of these, we currently drive a Zoe and that's 300mm longer than the Seagull, I really like the feel of a small car, they handle great, fit in lots of spaces big SUV tanks don't, tyres are cheaper, lots of advantages to driving small. Provided this meets crash safety requirements, it would be an excellent general purpose runaround for at least half the people in the country.
    People worry that small cars don't have enough cargo space, but they do in most cases. We refer to the Zoe's boot as a tardis boot, you always seem to be able to fit a bit more in. The stuff we've carried in that thing is amazing, from 230kg of wood pellet bags (rear seat laid down), to all sorts of garden supplies etc from the hardware store. We have a subaru forester and yet we never use it, just don't need to, even though we are rural as well.

Good news is another EV company may fill the demand gap eventually. Why would the EVs Direct type outfit sell a small EV for ...say... under $20k and undermine the over $30K market place they are profiting from with many less unit to deal with. Very good work you did there Sam. You are right that BEV would sell here in Australia undoubtable.

      Would you? OK it's cheap but there is no real dealer or service network and no chain dealership can possibly touch it as there is zero margin. Even EV direct sales companies wont want it. US prices would be higher but then shipping and import duty adds as well.
      With no service option locally, then what? battery pack is good and good reviews on BYD's other models but there are a lot of quality comments on BYD.
      There is an argument for a more or less throw away price but a possible catch, there is no crash test safety data yet.
      For the US, I don't see it working at a volume BYD would need. US likes its larger auto's even for only school runs or short city work. For the Asian market, it works.

    Viking I just came from my local Chevy dealer, looking at their new Bolt. And you keep quoting US prices like the base model Bolt as $29,000. Yes that’s what the MSRP price is, but my dealer added an extra $5000 to that price. And when I asked why, all she said was demand, they can’t make them fast enough! I told her no, I’ll wait for their $199/lease option if and when that comes around again. And Viking, I love your channel and all of the work you put into, but brother take a break(we’ll all miss you), spend this time with your wife and boys, you’ll never get this time back! Matt

    • @eish3291
      @eish3291 Год назад

    • @amperformance7998
      @amperformance7998 Год назад

      Yeah, and when are EV manufacturers like Tesla and BYD going to learn that they don't need to make their headlights and DRLs in unique shapes. There is absolutely no reason for these unique shapes to exist on EVs like they do on legacy cars. All EVs should have headlights that are exactly the same, six inch, perfectly round.
      Of course, I'm being a little sarcastic there. Frankly, there is no technical reason why a typical ICE car needs a grill these days, but as cars' shapes are increasingly determined by aerodynamics and safety regs, the legacy grill has become one of the few areas where a designer can create a visual identity for the car.
      Sometimes they go overboard (*cough* BMW *cough*), but even Tesla puts a subtle grill on their cars (look at the MY nose and the line that curves up from the corners, in between the lights to create a shadow "grill"). So as long as designers are using the space in interesting, creative ways, then let them have it. Who cares if it is unnecessary, as I pointed out earlier, having a headlight with a unique shape is also completely unnecessary.

    I agree with you that the first manufacturer that focuses on the low price end of the market will rapidly capture a large share of the EV market. The bulk of buyers (especially in the US) do not want an expensive EV. If they have to fork out $30K+, buyers will keep waiting for the next best think. Low cost buyers, students and 2nd car buyers are waiting for an attractive and affordable EV. Manufacturers need to get over the GREED motivation and start serving the real world. • @theairstig9164

      The ANCAP rating is a moot point if there is no RHD model to test. Putting a larger battery under it would make the 55Kw peak output seem even slower and it wouldn’t be $15K USD anymore. Have a think about the diminishing returns of putting in a bigger battery. Longer stopping distance, less efficient, more load on the brakes (debatable) suspension and tyres. Bigger regen spikes. My guess is BYD designed the battery to be air cooled then designed the rest of the car around it. The motor WILL throttle to 25Kw on long steep hills. Good luck dicing with the semi trailers

    There’s a huge market for an urban commute car. Especially for families with more than 1 car and people who need transportation but can’t afford more. At $10,000, this would easily grab 25% of the whole auto market (perhaps 50%), especially while people are getting squeezed financially.
    Even without the $7500 government incentive, this is a winner. Consider the amortized total cost of ownership include monthly payments, maintenance, repair, and overnight home recharge keeping it topped off. Not only is upfront cost lower than ICE, it will last at least a decade or 2.
