  • Krik of Black Owl Outdoors reviews the Jumbo Versipack from Maxpedition. This a right side carry Versipack, ideal from a strong side draw for right hand shooters. Like the rest of Maxpedition's gear, the Versipack lines are rugged outdoor gear built with rugged materials and top-notch design. The main compartment of the Jumbo Versipack is roughly 3 liters and can easily fit an on-canister stove as well as fuel cell, cook pot, camera and GSI cup with room to spare. Being in the Versipack series of lines, the Jumbo is worn over the left shoulder and secured with a 1/2" waistband which prevents the bag from flopping around and also places some of the weight on your waist, creating a more comfortable carry. If you are looking for a small bag to carry a Guyot or Nalgene water bottle and some extra gear, the Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack is perfect for just that. It also works well if you plan on riding a bike, as it can be slung around the back and worn there.
    The color of the pack in this video is the khaki/foliage combination.

    Dude thank you so much for showing a review of you wearing it.. I have seen so many videos of people with a camera pointed at the bag and digging through it.. I don't care what kind of toothpaste you like to carry just show how it looks!

    Nice review. It was good to see the bag on you and gain some perspective rather than see it just sat on a bench or something. I also liked that you talked about the bag and not the stuff you carry in it. All good stuff, thanks for sharing man.

    Krik, great review. Wearing it and explaining the function of actually moving through the woods with it was an excellent approach. Other reviews, even by some seasoned outdoors people lacked that entire issue. Keeping it light, etc. was also a sensible suggestion. You're right, no one wants to carry anything as it is.

    I echo the previous accolades for "Best Video", by far and away. You hit on all the points I was wondering about, i.e. how does it sit on your body, what does it actually look like in use, how does it feel, etc. There are endless "reviews" of someone sitting the bag on a table and endlessly going through opening and closing all the pockets, most of them trying to do it one handed. You have definitely hit the mark!! Subscribed.

    Thank you for the great review Krik. I found your review very useful in coming to a final decision. When I saw the Jumbo Versipack in the colour that you reviewed, I knew that was the colour that I wanted. What was confusing though was the fact that the Jumbo Versipack colour you described as Khaki-Foliage looked very different to the same colour pack on the Maxpedition website. Different lighting conditions etc can all have a big impact so I did some more research. I finally went with the Foliage pack which arrived today. Very happy. In conclusion, I believe that the Jumbo Versipack that you reviewed was also Foliage. Thank you again for the most useful review I have found…

    I've had one of these bags for a few years and I love it. The only criticism is that it can be uncomfortable if you overload it. I use it for my main work gear bag. It is as tough as old boots, after three years of bouncing around in my truck it still looks as good as new.
    Krik I'm loving the videos.

  • @pinkiewerewolf
    @pinkiewerewolf 10 лет назад

    I picked a Jumbo up a few months ago after watching your review and it is great. I use it for my EDC and I'm in & out of that bag all day. One thing I would like to see them change (and it is minor) would be to stiffen the main flap where the buckle is at. The edges kinda fold over, not bad but it could use a plastic liner. I put a plastic bowl cleaner, just a curved piece of flat plastic, in that pocket but it isn't perfect.
    Still, I love it enough to consider getting one for my right side and double them up for long days. Like you, I like to wear it on my lower back/side.
    It is pretty much awesome.

    Thanks for the clear demo. I'm right-handed and was leaning towards the S-Type (left side) because because of a bad knee; I live on 3rd floor of my apartment building and I need to keep my right hand on the rail when climbing or descending stairs. For in bag carry, the s-type would impede access to a right handed person, besides that I don't believe the s-type is being manufactured anymore; if you're lucky enough to find one used on places like ebay, you have to pay a premium for a used due to the limited supply available out there. Your video now has me leaning towards purchasing a "new" right side vs actually paying more for "used" s-type. Thanks!

    I have a right hand version, but carry it on my left because I keep my coffee in the bottle holder and I want priority access to that. When accessing the rest of the bag I just swing it round to the front and get access to everything anyway. It's a good bag, been my edc for over a year now.

    Believe it or not, the UTG bag is actually really well made. It's 1680 denier polyester (the same as the UTG gun cases) and does a fine job at resisting water and repelling stains. I bought mine for about $35 and have used it for about a year without an issue. I kind of feel bad since the design is a direct Mexpedition ripoff, but it's not a bad alternative for somebody who's short on cash (like I was when I bought mine.)

  • @mossberg6024

      BlackOwlOutdoors Hi Krik, and thanks for answering... Not really a minimalist, but really like the idea of going out without too much of a hassle. That is why the versipacks catch my attention I guess. A good list of what I would probably take is something like stated in Paul Kirtley's blog as a basic kit frontierbushcraft.com/2012/07/06/bushcraft-on-a-budget-kit/ Thanks! (Really looking forward for the Mongo Review)

    • @BlackOwlOutdoors
      @BlackOwlOutdoors  10 лет назад

      The Versipack is just too small, in my opinion, for that many nights. I wouldn't even know how you'd carry a sleeping bag. In that blog, he's using a backpack which allows him to strap his sleeping mat to. And overall, it has much more volume to pack the kit. As I said before, it comes down to comfort. You can walk into the woods with nothing and spend 2 nights (extreme example). Or you can walk in for 2 nights with 60 pounds of gear. You know? Judging by the photo, the rucksack he is using is probably about 30 litres in volume.

    • @luiszunzunegui7463
      @luiszunzunegui7463 10 лет назад

      BlackOwlOutdoors Yeah, I agree. I guess that a 1900-2000ci. (30-32L) is what would work best. I know that you aren't too fan of overloading slingpacks but maybe the Javelin VSlinger can do a better job? (can't really find it's capacity anywhere) If not I would look for a regular 30-32L... Any recommendations?

  • @frank-castle

    Is there a smaller version of this pack out there somewhere? i would like to get this to carry my edc during summer periods, when i obviously wear lighter clothes and there is not enough room for my stuff; i looked at the jumbo and it seems like a good pack, and I could use the fact that it has the outside water bottle compartment, the problem is, it's too big, i don't want to carry a full 1lt (40 ounces) klean kanteen because that would be too heavy, it's not a survival bag at the end of the day... so i was wondering if anyone knows of a similar pack but smaller (not necessarely by maxpedition). any advice will be apreciated :)
