Often I'll have discord, Spotify, RUclips, and a few other chrome tabs open on my computer while I'm gaming. Occasionally I'll have photo editing software open simultaneously too, which sucks up ram. That definitely dramatically increases the benefit of 16GB. 8GB is mostly workable, but you have to be much more disciplined in terms of what you leave running on your PC.

Reminds me of an experiment conducted by Techreport that lasted from 2013 through 2015 that constantly wrote to six different ssds; issues only appeared after 200 Terabytes written while finally dying between 600 Terabytes and 2.5 Petabytes. An ssd from a reputable brand is much sturdier than many realize; I run a pagefile on an ssd despite having plenty of ram. As long as one practices good backup habits regardless, running a pagefile on an ssd isn't an issue.

For me, I find that the extra RAM over 8GB is more for general usage as well as gaming rather than to improve gaming experience on its own. Yes, some games will suffer with less than 16GB of RAM but it's not the majority of them if the system is properly configured
While I'm sure a lot of people will close down apps here and there to save resources, there are quite a few people like myself who multitasks with browsers, Discord and perhaps a few other apps in the background.
16GB isn't a requirement, but it is what I'd recommend. But if all you have is 8GB because you're waiting for the next bit of extra cash to upgrade, ride on.

    • @MasterInDiguise
      @MasterInDiguise 5 дней назад

For sure. When I game, I also want to talk to my friends with discord and play some music in the background. When I had 8 gb of ram, i was suffering. After upgrading to 16 GB, it was smooth. It's sort of weird to just assume that a lot of modern gamers will only have the game running and nothing else. A lot of us are probably on some type of music playing or at least on a social app like discord or whatnot to amp up the fun.

The page file structure mirrors that of the RAM, using the most popular 4KB page size organization. The access type is mostly random, so from performance point of view it highly benefits to be left on a SSD storage, not HDD, since even a SATA SSD has two orders of magnitude higher random I/O rates, compared to the spinning rust.

It's really cool to see the results of somthing like this. I'd assume a sata SSD instead of nvm would be between the two but closer to nvme also. Depending on how single channel will work out in the future a scrappy budget system using page files(virtual mem) might be a solid solution to get gaming with little compromises. But I think not having dual channel mem will be a issue myself but I'll be looking forward to see what your findings are.

    About SSDs for page files.
Ive had a few SSDs in my main systems from 2013. I recently replaced those. My Samsung 840 Evo had over 100 TB written/read. It still works fine.
The page file thing is over hyped. Yes, it technically does degrade your SSD. But if you have a good quality drive, it wont matter until the point where you want to upgrade anyways.

That’s not guaranteed, no. Games have minimum system requirements, and unless they are particularly basic they will need dedicated graphics processors. At least 8gb of RAM and a solid state drive are very important for gaming, but a dedicated graphics card is most important.

You don't just need the page file for when your actually using more ram then you have. Memory that program allocate from the OS, but isn't actually used dosn't take up RAM but still uses up system commit and system commit size is limited to RAM + Page file, if system commit ever get's full you start getting out of memory errors and won't be able to start stuff even if you still have free ram.

So i go research how to find settings for it and i see it set on auto on SSD only(i also have 2x 1TB HDDs for storage and backup) and to my suprise it was set to have like i think ~11GB on SSD which is more than what i have RAM and basically i just lowered it to match my RAM and saved some couple gigs i didn't knew were used on my SSD. I upgraded from a Ryzen 1600 to a 5600 and went from 8GB (3000MHz CL16) to dual with an identical stick. The FPS didn't go much higher due to still using my RX580 (GPUs are almost inaccessible here), but the 1% and 0.1% lows increased DRASTICALLY. On BF1 for example I would get average framerates of 60 to 100, but from time to time it would reach as low as 30-40. After the upgrade, though, it's running at a constant 120fps and it doesn't go lower than 100, the lows are also way higher than before. The weirdness starts with Warzone (the only game which runs worse than before), I had similar numbers as the video with 8GB and an SSD, but after I upgraded the performance went down and now for example before or when dropping to battle (when looking at the rebirth map for example) the fps go even lower than 30 (before I would still get 60+ even when looking at the whole island). I will do a fresh windows install later to see if it fixes my issue.

If your system runs out of real RAM it will use the page file instead, so you shouldn't ever actually run out of memory. The downside to this depends on your storage- a fast SSD works okay for page files, but slow hard drives can seriously affect your gameplay. In last year's video I tested out Warzone with 8GB of RAM and a hard drive page file, and it was a nightmare!
In reality, 16GB should be enough most of the time, especially with an 8GB graphics card. If you regularly run games with a ton of memory intensive apps in the background, Windows will access the page file more often, and that might affect your frame rate. 32GB in PC = Play PS5 era games,(makre sure to have other capable hardware).

The reason I have 64 gb of ram is I make games, so I run a lot of software that uses a lot of ram, and pagefiling in some of those usecases delays things like baked lighting, compiling, rendering, and encoding just too massively. For gaming it is more about the game optimization, there is a lot of factors for ram, speeds, timings, and size and yes obviously the pagefile system.

    32 GB or go home....

If I remember correctly, when I bought RAM for my system, the difference in price between 8GB and 16GB was like $20 or $30, so I just got 16GB so I wouldn't have to worry about it or add more later. 8GB is probably just fine the same way that 4c/8t processors are still fine and 4GB of VRAM is still fine. People tend to overestimate their needs and drastically overspend for their use-case.
Edit: I just looked, right now it's about a 1-1 scale. 8GB is about half the price of 16GB. I would probably buy 8GB if building today

The way I see it 8gb will get the job done. But it's better to have 16gb

    • @FloatingOfficial

It actually doesn't get the job done. Theres a ton of games that having 8gb of ram can cause huge stutters. You need to have a 16gb minimum in a gaming PC.

@@FloatingOfficial As stated in the video 8gb is enough for gaming not that a few select games won't use more ram.
Like I said 8gb will get the job done but 16gb is better

Lemme make y'all question my sanity, I played some new games on my laptop with 8GB RAM, HDD, and my GPU has... 1GB VRAM. To make things worse, my CPU works with 1.8 GHz

If you touch escape from Tarkov you'll hugely notice 8gb vs 16gb, but it's highly CPU and RAM dependent and horribly optimized

8GB nowadays is a kneecap to any computer, if the owner wants to game the latest AAA titles, they basically have to close down everything, background processes' , chrome just to give that RAM some breathing room😅

As someone that has a i7 7700K machine with 64Gb of RAM and an i9 13900K machine with 128Gb of RAM I can't support anything lower than maximum (although it does suck that XMP doesn't work on DDR5 with 4 modules, but I need the memory bandwidth for non-gaming workflows so I just have to take the L on that)

Reality is. What ever the size of the "GDDR" ram on the dedicated graphics card. The system memory "DDR" should be double. So if you have a 6GB GDDR5 card. You should have 12 GB of DDR4 for system. The math pans out, that this is how it works for proper ram utilization. XBOX series X and PS 5 utilize page file which limits system memory for video memory and access using the ssd drive. Also you should of explained the difference between single rack and dual rack DDR ram as single rack ram accesses the data faster than dual rack improving frame rates as well.

Many of today's gamers have zero clue what it use to be like for gaming. Just a bunch of spoiled brats that absolutely has to have those high FPS for AAA titles at all cost. It's not always about eye candy, real games are supposed to be fun to play, not all about FPS.
