Thx for posting this (and all your other videos) - I’ve enjoyed testing out this one and now use it a lot. I really like the fact that it’s CPU usage is really low - you can spread this across tracks and busses and not have to worry. Appreciate your perspectives as always. Cheers.
Hi Mike, again a great informative video. Thx. Do you know U-he SATIN? If yes, I´d like to see your opinion on that Tape Machine emulation. I think it is by far the most versatile and deep plugin out there and it goes far beyond most other emulation concerning mixing options, features and coloration-option. And it simply sounds fantastic. It´s an older plugin but I do think it´s still the only one you really need, it fills all the gaps :) Cheers
I have found this to be either confusing or misrepresented in tape emulation plugins documentation. Steve's comment is exactly right. Over bias, when done properly, actually calibrates the high frequency response to be flat. If you Over-over bias, then yes, you will see high frequency loss. Under-bias actually extends HF response and lessens LF response. The idea of "bias-ing" the tape is to set a balance of LF and HF response relative to the playback calibration which determine how hard you will hit the tape. That's the +3 +6 +9 settings you often see on emulations. Hope this helps...
Great work on the video, as always. I've used this plugin and while it does an okay job, it ultimately gets a solid "meh" from me, especially given the price point. I've landed on mostly using a combination of IK and Softube for tape emulation with PA consoles for console emulations. On a budget, I even prefer the Hornet tape plugin to this.
@@mixingwithmike Thanks for following up. I neglected to mention the UA A800 since I was thinking mixing and associate that plugin so much with recording. If I'm recording real instruments with a mic, I'll run those through the A800 on the way in (after the 88RS). When mixing virtual instruments, or DIs that have gone through an amp sim, I'll typically use the IK Tape Machine 80 (keep the Studer thing going). I will also use the Tape Machine 440 on the master bus. I will sometimes use the Overloud (with the console emulation off) or Softube as an effect if I want some movement, especially on stereo tracks where I might mix in a little too much wow/flutter on purpose (e.g. keys or drum overheads if I want them really interesting). I had been doing that with the Overloud, but at some point started experimenting and decided I preferred the Softube tape even for that.

skip to 4:21
Wish it was 420 lol
am I the only one who didn't hear any much of a difference with the plugin bypassed and with it on? also between the different pre amp emulations?
try listening with your phone/laptop speakers.. for some strange reason I find that they show the subtleties much better
*Softube Tape, Satin, Waves J37 & Kramer, Beastkillz Reelight, IKmultimedia, Reelight Pro... For ever!*

The song used is "I Died Again" by Roach Girl, from the album "Roach World".
Thanks helping out!
Correct this is it. Thank’s. J
I thought it was Corinne Bailey Rae at first, they have very similar voice.
Like it very much, sounds subtle.... but great. Very Pro GUI..!!
Yes
Mike tape does not turn .does it effect to sound ?
You can set it to turn, but the animation can be turned off.
I thought bias effects mostly the high frequency response and distortion. Is this not the case?

@Steve MacMillan Thanks for the help on this one Steve!
@David Shackney Thanks David!
Looks like I need to make a video on Tape machines and the calibration process.
To say it sucks is an understatement.
because it’s actually much, much worse.

Which of the IK Tape plugs do you like the most? PA console emulations are the best. Softube Tape is also very good.

Great voice. Who is singing?
According to Gearslutz, expensive gear can make you sound great.
captivating song
Roach Girl - Album is called Roach World
@@BukanIbuMu Sure, you can put lipstick on a pig too, but it won't make it a great date.
