I can attest that clothes can improve ones outlook on life. After over 20 years serving in the military, I began to suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I began to spiral downwards into depression. I was even suicidal! One day after coming back from a therapist, I was feeling down because I didn't think anything was working. I somehow found Parisian Gentleman. I decided to enter my own sartorial journey. Now, three years on, I dress elegantly, Ive taught my self about suits, shoes and my entire mindset and behaviour changed. I am still here because of the Sartorial world!

As for more important problems in the world: tailored and bespoke clothing are far more sustainable than anything you would buy on the high street. You have explained in another podcast how bespoke teaches patience - the sartorial lifestyle is a 'slow' lifestyle - and how it breeds a taste for quality and excellence, which will make one cherish these beautiful items, take care of them and hold on to them, maybe even for a lifetime. This is what sustainability is all about. Sonya mentions how in essence THREE suits will do - if your clothes enhance you because they're literally made for you from beautiful materials, you don't want or need to buy something new every couple of weeks. Finally, sartorial is about individuality and personal expression - in addition to being about politesse and courtesy - much more than whatever goes up and down the catwalk. I believe our future is artisanship and handmade quality clothing: it's the only sustainable way to be. Even a mere century ago this was the rule rather than the exception.

And the tailored/MTM/bespoke stuff isn’t made by children in sweatshops. Custom clothing is a way to support and encourage entrepreneurs and craftsman, look great, and fight the more evil aspects of globalism.

Yes. I've had my off the rack jackets for more than 2 years and I always look forward to the next moment or opportunity I get to wear them. Even my "assembly lined" Allen Edmonds shoes, the black brogue oxford is ultra versatile to name just 1 example. The jackets and shoes suit and fit me so well I got lucky that I didn't need alterations done to them.
Meanwhile, all my sport and comfort wear gets recycled and thrown out every 3-9 months.

I can’t believe someone actually commented ‘why do you talk about clothes when there are real problems in the world’. You both answered the difficult questions so well. Whoever they were, are probably very bitter and joyless people. Your channel spreads a huge amount of passion and love and we are all grateful that you keep the spirit going strong for a more elegant lifestyle and world! With very best wishes from London!

I really enjoyed this very much. I find it funny when I saw the title I thought, this whole sartorial thing is not that important, there are so many other things. Now to be clear this was just a vague thought when I glanced at it, but after listening I realize, as you both have said, beauty is so important, in fact it is critical to our survival. A society without art will fail. Thanks, so very entertaining:) I have become a huge TLB fan by the way!

Something that I find admirable about Sonya's style is that it challenges the idea that women's clothes are disposable. The steadiness we attribute to men's style vs the variety in the case of women has been used for far too long as an excuse to produce very shitty clothing for women in cheap artificial petroleum fabrics. Even expensive women's shoes maintain no proportion between price and quality: it's all about adornment and flair for single use. In a world whose resources are about to be consumed to exhaustion, a return to long-lasting objects and quality made fabrics and garments is certainly welcome.

    • @SARTORIALTALKS

Yes Ernesto, this is exactly the message Sonya is spreading. Women are slowly but surely turning toward quality garments (even if they have to wear them more than 3 times !!!). Cheers, Hugo

Super. Just a few thoughts - 'Look good feel good' 'Clothes maketh the man' “If a woman is poorly dressed, you notice her dress. If a woman is impeccably dressed, you notice the woman.” Coco Chanel. You are right M. Hugo & M. Sonya, in a period of history where the world is upside down and vulgarity has been happy to take the place of class and style, there has to be some refuge, be it in a piece of art, a good book a heart warming film or play or even in a great piece of clothing or shoe. It is these that make us feel a little more human and positively affects the way we act.

Another wonderful video presentation! I had the chance to read many of the comments and it’s encouraging to see so many people that appreciate a deeper meaning to Sartorial living than fancy, expensive clothes. It is, of course, so much more than that. It’s a cliche’, but this lifestyle constitutes another wonderful way to “stop and smell the roses.” To take in and enjoy beauty, grace, and individual expression. It’s reflective and contemplative and expressive all at once.
What I truly admire about both of you is that your message inclusive. Your videos and books and discussions are open invitations to learn and enjoy the timeless contentment of sartorial living.

Also forever grateful for having me pushed into this way, making me discover an unexpected and fantastic world! I've started wearing what you'd call "proper suits" -unfortunately not bespoke suits yet- approximately a year ago and it's changed my life. Hugo, I can say that from the beginning when I began viewing your videos I noticed Sonya often wore men's clothes & admittedly I was a little taken aback. But I must say since I've viewed more & more of your videos I truly enjoy them. I glean so much information from your guests and I've come to truly enjoy Sonya's style, her image, her knowledge. I look forward to seeing both of you because as a couple the two of you are a delight. I particularly loved Sonya's video on hats as I have been a fan of hats & hat etiquette for many years. I've noticed more men seem to be sporting hats these days. I hope it's a sign of a return of the hat. I myself wear fedoras and have a small collection. Like Hugo I am a believer in suspenders. Thank you both for all you do. Sonya, you look stunning in your suits & ties. Thanks to both of you.

I recently have discovered this channel. I love it very much, and must admit that I appreciate this unscripted format of conversation very deeply.
It allows for a certain purity to come through. Perhaps it is only the honest expression of thought and emotion, but that alone is so powerful.
This raw, natural quality is something that I seek in every art form, no matter how sophisticated or refined. (Perhaps a different form of what the Japanese would call wabi sabi?)
After all, even conversation is an art form. What are "conversation" and "art" if not expressions of oneself?
So i say let us all be exclamations of existence!!! From our fashion to our voice.
Whether expressing pleasure or pain, celebrating style or mourning the loss of maestros, such is the art of living.
I sincerely appreciate your passion. Thank you both for doing what you do.

I love the talk about the sartorial lifestyle. I'd say at least 3 years ago having ignorance about craftmanship my wardrobe was full of fashion "etiquette" clothes. Guess what? I tossed away half of them and give them to other people keeping only a few. Thanks to channels like Sartorial talks I started looking for fabrics from Loro Piana or Vitale Barberis Canonico, learning more about the wool, looking for shoes with full-grain leather, and good stitching etc. I end up liking navy blue and charcoal colors and I start building my wardrobe again little by little. I don't spend money on clothes as I used to. In fact, I buy once a year or two but the quality of the product rewards me.

Hugo seems so relaxed in this video, maybe because he's tired from the previous session? I kinda like it. To be honest I've always liked this channel more than any other channels about men's style on RUclips. Hugo is all about bespoke tailoring and craftsmanship but always very creative and free in idea about forming one's own style. Something that other channels are quite stiff and thus boring in idea. Here I really feel like I've learned so much in forming and refining my own style. So I love the channel's free and creative nature yet sharing a great appreciation in craftsmanship. Beautiful, creative, fun yet extremely elegant!

    Hello to you both!
Thank you so much for these episodes. While I always look forward to watching new episodes, I do also find it calming to have them on in the background while I'm doing something else.
I know that it seems redundant to give a suggestion for an unstructured conversation, but I thought I might offer my two cents nonetheless: my favourite episodes tend to be those where you are taking turns to speak. At times, it can be difficult to follow the conversation when the voices are overlapping.
Of course, I am just happy that you are making videos at all!
    Stay safe,

You spoke to my heart with this one. I'm with you. Beauty from craftsmanship and works of art are appreciated by everyone, yet I found amongst many contemporary intellectuals, an insidious doubt creeps into the mind and seems to de-value it and doubt it's purpose. They say they like it, but few are compelled to act to preserve our cultural artefacts. As an artist, I try to create beauty that will outlast trends, yet it's difficult to find people with the taste to appreciate it. You shine a light on the sartorial domain to preserve it.
Thank you for for all your videos, I love this unscripted one.

I guess for me a lot of people have taken advantage of my vulnerabilities as a special needs person (Asperger's, sensory issues, stuff like that) so a formal suit and tie and homburg hat/dress cane tells people to back off. I like that it's weird and offputting because it puts people away from me I guess.
I'm not really insecure or feeling inadequate, I just have a hard time trusting people even with just being in my proximity. You dress weird, people leave you alone and you express yourself in amazing ways, it's a win-win.

After watching most of your videos I just had to give bespoke a try. Honestly, I feel like after trying out bespoke once, I find it life-changing. When I was a student I would get off the rack suits and my parents will tell me bespoke is too expensive. I use to think suits were uncomfortable because of the way it fitted but I've always liked the clothing style. But once I got my first bespoke suit it just feels better and more comfortable and now that I have tried bespoke I just can't go back to off the rack suits and I even try to convince my father and friends to try bespoke. I guess most of the time they think the only place you can get nice quality suits are from big fashion brands and bespoke tailors are just more expensive than the big fashion brands. Sometimes my father thinks I'm crazy to wear a suit in 30 celsius.

I agree with Hugo though... Worldwide, it's quite rare to see someone who is wearing a suit and wants to make it look great because they want to. Even in New York City. Very rare. With my day jobs in retail, I always compliment people who put in the time to dress themselves. And it looks like they never get tired of the compliments as they are so thankful for them.
Yes, beauty is underrated but important in the world.

Why does a lady like tailored clothing? For one thing the tailored outfit covers the body. There is more of a feeling of being secure, of being covered.
A well made suit helps with the posture. I don’t know how the tailor does it, but most people do not slouch in a suit. They are somehow encouraged to stand straightly.
Also, this is the work Sonya does. If a man wears a bespoke suit, he can recognize the quality in Sonya’s apparel and give her more credibility.
