    Hello everyone! Regarding the comment I made about the Scandinavian origin of the Goths, I said it is ''hardly believable'', that was a wrong choice of words. What I meant to say was that we are not 100% sure yet if their culture started developing in:
    1) Scandinavia,
    2) The region of today's border between Poland and Germany
    3) The Vistula river in Central Poland
    Of course, since the Goths were a Germanic tribe, their ancestors in the Bronze Age lived in Scandinavia. However, during the Iron Age the Germanic tribes expanded further south developing many new different sub-cultures. The Romans began mentioning the Goths in their texts around the 3rd century A.D. so it is difficult to know if they crossed the Baltic Sea at that time or if their culture developed within the region of the Bronze Age southern Germanic cultures.

      I hope that genetics one day will expose all historical facts. Visual river always been inhabited by Slavic tribes not Germanic tribes and by logic if Gots were fighting against Romans so it is more likely that they were Slavic. Germans and Romans were Celtic people and Germany was always extension of Roman Empire. Eastern Germans have Slavic DNA so they are Slavic people as well who at some point of the history were Germanised.

    In the oral tradition Wisigoths and Ostogroths described themselves as coming from Gaut, their main god, father of both branches. We have gothic sources in latin and even latin sources that talk about the origins of the Goths, the most known goth writer is Jordanes, inspired by Cassiodorus, they talk about 'Scandza' or 'Scandia' to describe Scandinavia (see Orosius, another writer). They retrace the goths to Gotland and Öland in Scandinavia, "Gotaland" (Goth land) which gave Catalunya, it's Gothia Nuevo, the new Goth or the new Goth land. Just like we would say the new world for the americas.
    (Also see Strabon and Tacitus)
    There's still stuff to be researched and digged up, but we have pretty good feedback from most writers and from etymology study.

      The funny thing is that Gotland gave Catalunya, and Oc languages (catalan and occitan), O is how we say 'yes' in Oc languages (catalan yes used to be O as well), Gaul languages were separated in two groups, Oïl and Oc (which is how we use to say 'yes' or 'oui' in both parts). I'm not sure if ò also written òc have tongue origins or roots in Öland (Ö-land), would have to ask linguists, unclear origins. But it's still an interesting fact.

      The visigoths are romanian, the getae dacians. They werent germanic, but became religious missionaries and got to convert the germanics.
      Iordanes says it, the visigoths and the gepids are getae dacians and thats why my ancestors, the visigoths, named Sweden, Denmark and Finland, Dacia.
      The getsi, guttones, etc from Gotland, Iirdanes says they are the getae dacians. There is also the daikones in Gotland, literally the dacians.
      And the visigoths are not germanics. They spoke vulgar latin like the romanian language is today. They are celts, thracians dacians. The thracians are the oldest celts.
      Visigoths grew vineyards( non germanic) and if you see those vings on their helmets? Those are celtic, just like the gauls had.
      In Romania we officially reject the visigoths. We say,, those were some migratory tribes from far away,,. But in reality it was our ancestors.
      Romanians like Rome, Emperor Trojan is even on our anthem and we cant be proud of the visigoths that destroyed the Roman Empire.
      And the romans, are also celts. The etruscans and the trojans, founders of Rome, were celts and related to thracians.

  • @romaniaplus

    The way the goths attacked the Roman Empire seems to be just a continuation of the Geto-Dacian style of war. Almost every year, the southern Danube Roman province Moesia was plundered by Dacians, especially during the winters when the river's waters were frozen. Also, the scorched earth tactic was used by Romanians against Ottomans many times starting with the 14th centuries. I feel somehow that the history of Dacians did not end with the defeat from 106. According to the modern history Dacians simply vanished and this is weird.

    While there may not be a sign in Scandinavia that says Goths started here, you can be sure that an elite core of the tribe probably did in fact emigrate from Southern Scandinavia, maybe even Gotland. Yeah they picked up people along the way but certainly their origin was as their legends state.

    • @wilb6657
      @wilb6657 Год назад +3

      Funny you mention this. There actually IS a "sign", of a sort, which says "The Goths came from here". In Gotaland, there are rune stones dating from the Viking Age, which state that many centuries before, Gotaland became overpopulated, and a third of the people had to pack up and leave the island. According to this legend, the descendants of these people came to live in Southeastern Europe. Furthermore, scientists have examined the remains of Visigothic nobles from Spain and have found strong genetic links to Northern Europe and Scandinavia. Honestly, at this point it's obvious that, at least, the original/elite classes of Goths came from Scandinavia. I don't know why historians are so in denial about this.

      The Goth leadership has been described as a Germanic military elite, if I am not mistaken becoming a clear distinction after separating into Ostrogoths and Visigoths. A lineage apparently descended from Amal "the favored"' later produced the Ostrogoths king of Rome Theodoricus. Fritigern, who like Cniva earlier destroyed a Roman army and two (2) emperors was a Balto, as was Alaric who sacked Rome in 410., followed by Ataulf his brother.

    I was taught that the Goths probably all came from the Baltic island Gota. The only hardly believable thing about this is that the Goths were so numerous, it’s hard to imagine such a large group, spreading almost all over Europe, coming from a single, not very large, island.

    • @historicaladventurevideos
      @historicaladventurevideos  2 года назад +2

      Do you mean the island of Gotland, as other people have suggested? I believe that ''hardly believable'' was a wrong choice of words, I should have just said that we are not certain of that yet (I was also reffering to the wider region of Scandinavia, not the island specifically). You are right about the number of people on the island though, but it could be possible that the people who came from this island formed an elite class and ruled over the tribes they came upon, spreading the Gothic culture in that way. This is also similar to how the Kievan Rus elites ruled their lands.

    • @CarvedStones

      The goths didn’t migrate out of southern Sweden in a singular event, it was a gradual and slow process, many even remained on the island itself.

    • @wilb6657
      @wilb6657 Год назад +4

      @@CarvedStones Yep. However, these frequent migrations probably inspired the later legend of the migrations from Gotaland, and Southern Sweden. Incidentally, there was a legend, documented many years later, during the Viking Age, which spoke of a massive migration from Gotaland, towards southern Europe. This was probably a later retelling of the origins of the Goths. Oh-and finally, archaeologists conducted genetic studies on the remains of Visigothic nobles buried in Spain. They found genetic links to Scandinavia.

The north (left) side of danube were the scitians/sarmatians with an iranian culture but with the elements from their way. So, there are the historical writings of sarmatians fighting the new comers "bastarns". With the time they associated themselves against the romans and later against the other germanic tribes goths and gepids.
      Maybe the bastarns called themselves "geats", and there would be confirmed the Jordanes writing from 6th century, and the association with the sarmatians was reflected in the name of the capital: Sarmizegetuza (sarmats-ze-gets), "ze"="dhe" being "and" conserved by the balcanic language - albanian.

If you are talking about the maternal haplogroup Q, I have studied it and it seems really interesting. I think what is still being studied is as I've said: whether the bulk of the Germanic people migrated from the region of today's Germany and Poland to Scandinavia and then back to central Europe or whether Scandinavia was their original homeland and then would spread southwards. The Getae continue their history under the name of Goths, this representing the white page of our 1000-year history.
    ''' Until the time of Deceneu, the Goths were called Geti and were called by several names, being divided into several powers. The Ostrogoths, those from the east, the Visigoths from the west of Europe, in any case their main residence being Dacia, which today we call Wallachia and Septem Casta (Transylvania). Nicolo Zeno, Italian historian 1557, in the "Books of the Getae " about the genealogy of the Getic people, from the biblical origins. And other authors describe the same historical realities. The Goths were the ancient Getae, with a modified name. They migrated to western Europe and northern Scandinavia and under the name Goths, Ostrogoths, Visigoths gave birth to other nations. Many documents. Excluding Germanic peoples, invented by Western historians, without roots in antiquity, in order to have an ancient ancestry. Roman Hispania was already in decline in the later half of the Roman Empire due to political and economic instability. Plus there were a wave of migrating tribes that entered into hispania long before the goths did: The Alans, Suebi, and Vandals. The goths were basically sent there to kick out the tribes there in return they will get permanent land there. It was a gradual process to kick out the tribes but once they did, they were actually preserving Roman infrastructure there, even based their legal systems and such around it with a Germanic twist. They also hastily rebuilt some of the cities, even creating a few new ones with functioning aqueducts and such. Isidore of Seville also greatly influenced the goths to learn about mathematics, astronomy, science, etc.
      The only thing that basically ruined visigothic Spain was its frequent rebellions and power grabs from the nobility, it created a melting pot of corruption, sadly when Leovigildo reformed Germanic and Roman laws for the better (allowing Hispano Romans to marry goths which in turn allows them into the nobility with their descendants and creating the Hispanic law to unite them under one cultural identity), he also decided to bring back that Balti dynasty polices from their Thervingi age. This led to rivalries and usurpers constantly like King Rodrigo. This is also why Hispania got invaded and the Visigoths didn’t really have any way to fight the Muslims back due to their division. It wasn’t until the establishment of the kingdom of Asturias founded and led by visigothic descendants that they actually create a somewhat unified fighting force to repel the Muslim invaders.

      They spoke a Germanic language but i hate when people call them Germanic under the same umbrella as the Franks and Saxons and other tribes of the Germanic land between the Rhine and elbe because the goths were obviously different

      Thats a different place then where the goths came from.. we use the term "germanic" because there was a ridiculous amount of them in tribal forms, with different ideaologys and worships, but they all shared a similar dialect. and they held quite alot of different lands. what we do not know is how the goths unified in the first place ect.
