- Stephen Sondheim, the renowned composer of "Into the Woods," "Sweeney Todd," "Gypsy," "Sunday in the Park with George" and other essential works of musical theater, died early Friday morning, according to Aaron Meier at DKC O&M, the producers of Sondheim's current production "Company." He was 91.
Sondheim died suddenly, the New York Times reported, citing his lawyer and friend F. Richard Pappas. Sondheim had just celebrated Thanksgiving with a dinner and friends the day before, Pappas told the Times.
As lyricist, songwriter, conceptual artist and creative force, Sondheim was perhaps without par in the modern American theater. His works encompassed astonishing range: the updated "Romeo and Juliet" romance of "West Side Story" (for which he wrote the lyrics), the travails of a modern group of friends and lovers in "Company," even the woes of presidential murderers (and attempted murderers) in "Assassins."
Over the course of his career, he won an Oscar, a Pulitzer, eight Grammy Awards, eight Tony Awards, a Kennedy Center honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Stephen Sondheim Theater in Manhattan's Theater District is named for him.

@@fairamir1 I agree that it's not an opera, but there are a bunch of classical/operatic elements that Sondheim uses in the score, not just in ST, but also in "A Little Night Music", which he wrote in the style of a Viennese operetta writing everything in a division/subdivision of 3/4 time (like a waltz).
@@fairamir1 Sondheim's definition of opera versus musical theater was simple: operas are done an opera houses, musicals in theaters. When ST was done on Broadway it was a musical. When it was done at Houston grand opera and the NCO it was an opera.
"Gypsy", one of my all time favorite scores and shows. How incredibly lucky we all are to have had Stephen Sondheim, and to have had him for so long. You did well, Sir, and deserve your rest. Grazie.
RIP Sondheim. It's the end of an era in American Musical Theatre. I will miss the wonderful theatre gifts he's given me (even though we've never met).

Just ❤ An American icon and worldwide legend. His music is the soundtrack to so many lives. How lucky are we to have it eternally.
Not just American musical theater but he was also a giant in British musical theater as well. I remember Julia McKenzie in Follies on the London Stage and more and more. Fabulous!! Now he'll be making music and writing with Hammerstein on the other side.
Rest In Piece, the man who brought happiness and music to the world
I just watched Six by Sondheim. When he talks about his mother, he is asked if he wanted children. He thinks about and says yes, he wishes he had had them, but his shows and music are like his children. It makes you wonder, if he had had children, would he still have been as prolific as he was. Imagine what the works may have missed out on. We are glad he has left us so many “children” that will live forever.

Children could have influenced him in a different way, and he might have left tons of different observations. Love him as he was, too.
‘Six by Sondheim’ was a bit disappointing. With his passing, I hope we will get another, more epic documentary covering his entire life and career.

When I saw the thumbnail, I thought it was a movie about Ernest Hemingway played by Tom Hanks.
This is when I do feel like an alien on earth cuz this music does nothing for me and I don't get why people are going nuts.
