Absolutely wonderful! Thank you all for taking the time to have this conversation. I always love getting insight on the finer details of these stories we’ve grown to see as legend. Merry Christmas to you! Looking forward to the next episode.
If you like revolutionary trivia, I have some for you, found when doing my research for my book "WHY WE FOUGHT,this is a revolutionary book about the American Revolution" Nearly all those left in the fight come December 1776 were Irish, many only spoke Gaelic! As the American army dragged itself towards Trenton for the first time each soldier was issued with half a pint of Whiskey, to keep them going, numb the pain from wounds
Great episode and chock full of trivia. Not noted but still interesting, is that one person fell overboard during the trip to Trenton, Colonel Haslet from Delaware, who was killed in the battle of Trenton. On the treacherous return trip, 3 soldiers fell overboard and died.
I forgot to add. Presbyterian Ministers were vital to the American Revolution. Two Presbyterian Ministers were at the military briefing were Washington outlined Colonel Reeds plan to go on the Attack and recross the river Delaware. One would die in the second battle of Trenton, the other soon after. The Presbyterian Ministers were hotter than Hell and revolutionary fanatics to the core. Parleying with the British would be an absolute anathema to them.
Continued:- Keep them warm and keep fear at bay. After the successful battle of Trenton the American soldiers were ecstastic , overjoyed with relief and sheer Happiness. They had just routed the toughest regiment in the whole British effort. Nearly 900 prisoners were taken .Not much less than that entire American army involved in the fight! One small fella an American soldier placed upon his head a Hessian mitre hat, and with hands on his hips went strutting about Trenton telling everyone " Look at me I'm a Hessian" The Americans fell about laughing. This was probably the first real laugh any American soldier had had since the whole bloody revolution started. The Americans upon seeing what stores to seize, quickly came across the Hessians rum ration. Which was eagerly distributed out to one an all. Washington quickly restored order he feared the drink greatly. More than he feared the enemy! He ordered his smal force to come to assembly and escort the massive Hessian haul back over the Delaware. The force was not much larger than the POWs they had to guard
