In 1971 I was 16 years old at a drive-in theater in northern New Jersey. About 10:00 at night the sky got so bright no one could see the movie. We turned towards New York and saw a great mushroom cloud with an orange ball of light! The entire crowd at the drive-in movie theater stood and waited for the shock +blast surely to come. Being 1971 we were in the middle of the Cold War and fully expected a Russian attack at any moment!
What had happened was a giant gasoline storage tank in Exxon oil refinery blew! The top of the giant tank supposedly was blown 300 ft in the air. Windows were shattered up to 10 miles away. When we counted all the way up to 60 and no one died we all realized it wasn't a nuclear attack. But for those 60 Seconds, you can imagine our thoughts! True story, ask anyone from the area in that era!

The introduction of nuclear weaponry made it clear as day that a complete annhiliation of humanity wasn't a question of "if" anymore, but rather "when". No human with a rationally functioning brain could've honestly expected those in possession of these WMDs to be responsible to begin with. It's only a question of time until those weapons are put to use.

The most overlooked problem is a ventilation. It's nice to seal your windows with a duck-tape, but you still need to breath for a week. This depends heavily on number of people inside, and volume of your shelter. You can't just seal air-tight (or even close to air-tight) your house. Also the ventilation, or outside air conditioning might be still running and pulling irradiated dust inside your shelter. Having water is important, but having air is more important.

I worked in HVAC, the outdoor portion of your a/c, otherwise known as the compressor unit, does not pull air from outside, it compresses the freon in your system and pushes it through a "choke-pont" inside the line, converting the liquid freon into vapor, and in the process causing it to cool rapidly. Think of any time a compressed can of anything, when rapidly decompressed cools extremely fast and even freezes. Anyway, this vaporized freon is then moving through the coils of the indoor unit, otherwise known as the air handler, and the blower of the air handler pulls your indoor air through the indoor filter and blows your now cooled indoor air, through the vents. Do with this information, what you will. That's the most basic rundown of what's going on, and how it works the air. That says nothing about the control system, electrical components, thermostats....I'm out. Peace be with you

    • @SmartK8
      @SmartK8 Год назад +7

@@AcornEmbrio Agreed, but consider that in Europe people mostly just window without any ventilation, or have just air vents, only rarely they have HVAC. In US this might be probably less of an issue for most of the people. Still unaccounted ventilation might prove to be a unforeseen problem. I, for example, have an air vent that is going from my bathroom directly up to the roof. It's good to know these things and act on them, otherwise you risk contamination. That was my point, windows are one thing, but not a whole picture. It's good to have this solved beforehand, or at least be aware of air flow in your particular house. In a panic, you might not be able to think about such things. Of course I hope, this won't be needed. Ever.

Those two movies are so disturbing and depressing that they make you think that taking refuge in a bunker is like getting into a radioactive chamber, as both things only serve to give you a long and painful death. We lined up in the halls facing the walls with our heads tucked between our knees and arms above our head. What scares me the most today however is the very poor leadership which Americans have elected to office. American leaders of the 1960s were far more competent.

This is the perfect example for us that they really don't care about us, as long as they are getting THEIR point across to their enemies. I didn't ask for this and neither did you. One bad piece of advice.... heading to a major airport. Those are targets. Any place a bomber can use as a makeshift base will be targeted in an all-out attack. Some of the other advice and weapons effects depend on the size of the weapon. Early on it was thought bigger is better, but it was realized that multiple 300-500 kiloton weapons were more effective that one larger weapon.
Also, water can get contaminated with fallout particles, but the water itself won't be contaminated. Simply running it through a water filter (even a makeshift diy one) will render it drinkable (if not spoiled from some other contamination .... don't drink pond water unless properly filtered/boiled).

Knowing what I do about nuclear fission inside the core of a bomb states that : The greater the yield is inversely proportional to the decay of fissile elements, while the opposite is true. If this were a "Strategic Attack" , the yield would be very high, while the fallout stage would not cause as much damage, the doctrine being to wipe out a city of millions with the blast wave while decay happens quicker, causing less after effects. This is why The Japanese attacks in WW2 were so devastating:Fat Man and Little Boy were of little yield, comparatively speaking. But the fallout was decidedly much deadlier, being a "Tactical" attack. A great idea for an Infographics episode, Strategic vs. tactical nuclear strikes.

I was going to say your first step when a nuke goes off if you're indoors is to fill your bath, but you beat me to it.
All the earlier advice to wash yourself off seems a little odd in the absence of the later suggestion to conserve water...
One thing I don't think you mentioned - if the shockwave hasn't hit yet, get the heck away from any windows. Getting hit with a face full of shattered glass will HURT. Opening your windows first would be ideal, but there probably won't be time; if you're 10km away from the explosion, that's only about 30 seconds before the shock wave hits.

You mentioned water in the distribution system will be safe from contamination until the surface water source is contaminated. Fact is, the water treatment plants will not be in operation hence the water in the distribution system will be isolated and if not open to atmosphere, will be relatively safe.
Also, the bombs dropped in Japan were approximately 15KiloTon bombs. Nowadays, the standard unit of measurement is in the MegaTon range so radiation levels wouldn’t return to normal for possibly 1,000’s of years.

Once the EBS sounds the alert for MIRVs inbound, I will drive as close as I can to a military base (which is 10 minutes away from me), park my car, place a portable folding chair on the roof, sit on the chair, put on my shades, pop open a can of beer, and hope that the base was targeted with a high-yield warhead. A second before I get vaporized, I will thank God with a smile on my face.

As a teenager in the late 70's early 80's this worry was a fact of life. I thought we had moved past the threat that we as kids had to put in the back of our teenage minds, going on with our normal lives but also low key knowing it was always there.
So NOW it's once again Global Thermonuclear
    War FEAR 2.0.💔 🥺....
only now we have kids & grandkids for an added splash of terror to the mix. Praying that what we all believed, for a wonderful few years, our comfortable happy world doesn't go completely MAD.

tp be honest it never went away. I served on Trident missile capable, nuclear powered submarine USS Florida SSBN-728, from 1999 to 2002 (and then on nuclear powered fast attack submarine USS Asheville SSN-758, 2002-2003).
It's not classified that our main mission was "strategic deterrence" because the other side never stopped sending their boats out. Of course, at any given time, I can never confirm nor deny the presence of a nuclear warhead on the boat at that time. Florida has since been converted to SSGN (conventional tomahawk missiles replacing the Trident missile capability).
The difference was that when the Soviet Union fell, Russia was not as overtly hostile as the USSR was...but still isn't our friend and neither is China. But yeah we have been on a hair trigger against both the whole time. You can't really have a non-hair trigger if you want the ability to retaliate and stop further attacks. And now we have added possibility of non-state actors (terrorists) as well as India and Pakistan.
I never liked it, I wanted a fast attack submarine. It would be best if all the nuclear powers sat down and agreed to disable all nuclear arms in a short amount of time, within one Presidential Administration...but it's hard to see it happening 😞

This is great info for sure, but also you have to take into account of the not so trustworthy civilians in the event of a nuclear war, even during hurricane katrina people were acting like society collapsed and looted and pillaged nearby houses and businesses. Make sure you are able to defend yourself from either foreign or domestic threats and learn escape routes out of the city that aren’t major roads. And i would also use this info for natural disasters too since katrina proved this one
