  • This is part 5 of our multi-part series on Human Skin Color.
There is a big difference among the skin cancer rates across different racial-ethnic groups in America. Some of this difference can be explained by skin color, and the ability of skin to engage in a tanning response. In this video, we look at why skin cancer forms, and the role that the skin pigment eumelanin can play in protecting against mutations that can lead to uncontrolled cell growth, and cancer formation.

Excellent informative, balanced video. Mid-2007 saw Whitey here surviving stage-1 malignant melanoma in my middle inner right arm. Paid attention to a changed mole-thankfully! Good thing I have rather few moles.
Scandinavia or Patagonia for this Northern/Central Californian? Sunscreen and Ray-Bans travel with me-especially towards the summer solstice.

Highly melanated skin does block 90% of UV rays which makes white people 5times more likely to get some form of skin cancer. Though mortality rates for nonwhite Americans who get skin cancer are higher.

Would seem legit if skin color were the only differences between various ethnic groups but there are many differences in the dna, which I assume you must know already. “Mutations” could be explain by mating between two different types of people, interesting no consideration at all is given to that, and no emphasis on the fact that different scientist have different plausible theories and nothing gives this theory any weight over the others. We discover new information everyday and clearly there is much more that we don’t and can’t know about the past than the tiny bit that we assume.

  • @Astute-recruit

Except that when you talk about skin cancer incidence you must discuss mortality rates...People with Skin of color includes Africans, Asians, Middle Eastern, Hispanics and all other non caucasian ethnicities have disproportionately higher mortality rate than caucasians even when diagnosed at the same stage. SCC metastatic rates are 30-40% higher in SoC..ALM is 5 times more common in SoC. 5 year melanoma survival rates are 90% versus 62% in SoC Disparities and inequalities exist! Everyone is susceptible to skin cancer. We should target these racial disparities and barriers to diagnosis and treatment for skin cancer among all ethnicities.

@@breaktide251 It just happens to be the subject of my PhD thesis. And I have published articles on skin cancer disparities. I’m trying to spread awareness about the controversies and myths. My stats are from peer reviewed journals. You can check them. What I said was constructive criticism I haven’t negated anyone’s point.

@@Astute-recruitImpressive stuff. Though am curious as to why the stats change when it comes to mortality rate

    • @Astute-recruit
      @Astute-recruit 4 месяца назад +2

@@-brutal-. Thank you for your comment and excellent query. I will discuss a few:
Studies highlighted the multifaceted factors contributing to higher mortality rates. Variances in lesion appearance & manifestation on skin of color ( SoC) Insufficient awareness & detection by clinicians and patients regarding lesion appearance, the absence of campaigns focused on early detection, the unknown role of sun protection, socioeconomic influences, suboptimal screening and research participation. Additionally, individuals with skin of color are predisposed to developing more aggressive variants such as ALM- acral lentigenous melanoma, SCCs and BCCs here genetic factors are thought to contribute. Try searching for skin cancer lesions among SoC online. A scarcity of depictions on pigmented skin its evident. Research indicated that a mere 4.5% of textbooks and 11% of online images address this inadequacy (Louie & Wilkes, 2019). Consequently, delayed diagnosis contributes to increased mortality. The U.S SEER database also confirms disparities.

LOL, Ignorance is a bliss appenratly."Good for you"...(sarcasm)
-While everybody know that darker skin tone (= just higher melanine count) is a good protection in Sunnier** geographical zones (stronger Albedo Zone = more Sun Light) , like the Sahara for being on Earth's Equator. ((same apllies for Eyes Iris* and darker brown protection))
-Pale ("white") skin while being a weaker protection against Uv light as other benefits. (Like all Things in Nature, its always a "Win-Lose relation" [meaning: you lose something, but you gain something else entirely, though its never equal nor comparable].
-Let me explain; Pale skin is an (evolutionnary) advantage in colder and "greyer" (cloudy) Climates, while darker skin is as an disadvantage, because it impacts body Growth & mental Depression (litteraly) !
Because in Colder & cloudier territories (due to less Albedo*= less Sun** light) Darker skin block too much sun light to synthetize "enough" Vitamine D for a Body Growth, thus an Ethnic African born in Europe and living (during its chilhood) will tend to be smaller then if he was born and lived in Africa or any Equator territory and "less healthy".
Also "whiter Skin" or colour beige* Tone (not necessarly Pale) has been shown multiple times that its more attractive (sexuality speaking), the Face especially (due to its more colourful aspect with reddish/pink chicks and pale violet Lips. AND let's not forget also Blue or Green Iris (eyes).)
For example: Just like the female (bird ) the Indian peafowl* who are only attracted to colourful feathers on Males! Which is an disadvantage for being to "showy" for Predators, it's still over-ruled by female attraction and pressure.
Im dead serious about all of This !

Considering darker skin is much more prevalent worldwide, it would follow that lighter skin would be worth more due to it being scarcer. Pretty stupid putting a value on people based on skin color, don't ya think?
