I’m a 68 year old woman with a healthy concern for many of the ways that complex electrical systems can go wrong after living on a sailboat in my youth. I wasn’t sure at first, but the uncomplicated ways, especially in regards to my electrical system, are the best for me. Living and travelling in Northern Canada and Alaska means there are very few moments when the sun is directly overhead. Travelling on dusty gravel roads means keeping them clean would also be a concern. You, in my humble opinion, are such a support to me in making my van life as simple as can be. I am 70 and I'm building out my own 1987 Peugeot J9. Living here in Switzerland something large is to cumbersome. Used to fulltime for 6 years in Canada and the USA in a 38' Winnebago Elandan and that was luxury. Now it will be simple and comfortable. Looking forward to make my first trip in June. Happy travels!

Camping and even more noticeable the practioners typically are very independent people. Yes many share their wisdom, experience and expertise to others. Dee you are correct in seeing the challenges of living on the road in a vehicle. There are many voices that barker out do this or that oh don't do this! A few gentle voices whisper out a more balanced approach to living this minimalist movement. It's economic..it's social..it's technological and it's personal. This gentle lady is one of those reasoned voices that sing so beautifully to go to map out a minority plan. Yes it's not for everyone to implement it in exactly the same formula as she does. What inspires me she calls out an attitude..a philosophy that eludes so many Nomaders and the balance of society. She's taken the road less traveled and is sensitive to how delicate her message is ..listen do more with less...just listen to her carefully worded intro. You are more than a pretty face. My impression of you is now very different than it was before l listened.
Great points! While my original “dream van” ideals were instagram-worthy, and included building the full solar-powered electrical system, reality dictates a different direction. I’ll be in a minivan full time, with a good-sized fridge being my primary energy user, and want all my systems to be as easy as possible. We’ll see how my 2 suitcase solar panels work, along with recharging while driving, and adjust as time goes on. Happy travels!
Right there with you sister. We have about the same setup. The lower maintenance, space and monetary savings far outweigh all the headaches that come with a fixed panel solar system.

I'm not out to change anyone. Myself, I went with a high quality 90w German Mono adhesive panel in 2014 when I knew I would be boon-docking for 4+ days at the Midwest Renewable Energy Association Fair (Custer WI). It was for running a compressor fridge, which sips power. Performed great because I went with a Genasun controller and Valence 130Ah LFP battery. One good day of sun and it will run for a weeks worth of shade. And, it was a net zero weight gain, as I replaced my size 27 lead-acid coach battery with a
I have similar energy needs. I charge my phone, ipad, laptop and usb devices like small fans and lights. I have used a portable system and usually recharge it when driving. I have solar panels that I can set up wherever, but rarely have to use them. They are more of a backup. It is helpful to let folks know there are alternative ways of doing things that can work just fine. I think it is important to think about what your priorities are and then think about what you are able/willing to do to meet those. I’m with you! I wouldn’t want something that I couldn’t easily replace/change out. The fixed panels, batteries, inverter systems look like a challenge if something stops working. If you don’t live close to an expert - you are done.
Sometimes I think people go for the "cool factor" rather than a more practical solution. I am so glad I don't have anything on my roof. My partner and I had solar on our TT and we burnt up in the sun. In my truck, I can park in the shade a be cool. I will admit I just bought a small generator to help in bad weather to charge the batteries. I lived through 8 straight weeks of rain while living and camping in AK for 4.5 months. THAT situation will make you think of more possibilities

I so agree with you.I am doing my van with portable power just like you. You can also travel stelthier without solar on top. Besides, I can use it at home should there be a power outage.
I have chosen the same thing for my small slide-in camper on my 5 foot bed Tacoma. What I also like about the movable solar panels is that in Spring and Fall, the sun being low, I am able to place them at the perfect angle. Thank you for another interesting video!
Im dreaming and preparing for van life and I agree with you. I’m planning very simple systems to at least start out on my journey. Price wise and what I’m comfortable with are big reasons for me.
At this point I’m not wanting fixed solar panels. One reason I’m to darn old to be climbing around on my bread truck😬 My folding panel works great for me to charge my Bluetti AC 50s.
I absolutely agree to keep it simple. We converted a van in the 70's and NEVER used the sink, so we wouldn't do that again. Keeping it simple means less to go wrong, which makes life a lot more enjoyable. Thanks for this post, I think it might help a lot of people.

I absolutely do love the simplicity of your type of set up. I think that if it was only me travelling without my little one, perhaps I could do the same. Both my kids are gamers, and Alexis loves to continue to keep in touch with her friends via gaming while we travel, so we fall into the category of needing extra power. Maybe one day my set up will be simpler… but then I keep thinking of the ability to store ice cream. 🤣
As someone who does a month or so per year of vanlife (but in a Prius Prime) your own solution is almost exactly what I do. My own main reason is not wanting to mess up the perfect aerodynamics and perfect stealth of my car. You already have a deck which looks exactly like solar panels, with exactly the stealth/aerodynamic losses of solar panels. So, if I had your van setup, that deck would be solar panels, either of the walk-on variety to double as a deck, or with some arrangement for stowing the deck under it and being able to put the deck over it when desired, or hinge the panels up to reveal the deck below, or something like that. I'd find a spot (maybe up under the dashboard, in the fenders, under the deck, or in the engine compartment) to install the guts of a house electrical system: charge controller, DC-DC charger, inverter, LiFePO4 battery. And I'd add in a good air compressor and good way of jump starting the van, also. But messing with electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and heating stuff is something I have long done as a DIYer and engineer, so something tucked away in bits and pieces is something in my skill set and comfort zone, and there is no shame about it not being in yours. We all have very different specialties and skill sets, and the French have a nice phrase celebrating that. You're not wrong to stay in your comfort zone. Even a van builder like Jonnie is justified in going with a packaged solution like the Bluetti of the customer's choice. It's not too limiting, and it's easy to replace the whole thing if it breaks down. Simple is good. But on the other hand, it's not making perfect use of a specific vehicle's space, nor is it taking advantage of integrating as well as possible with the vehicle's own systems. Your own power station is small enough that charging it from the van's 12V cigarette lighter port while driving, probably doesn't cause you to run the van much extra, just to be charging. With a bigger power station or house batteries, the 12V outlet just requires the engine to be on for too long, so then you have to go to using an inverter on the vehicle battery, or a DC-DC charger on the vehicle battery to speed things up. Being happy with your solution is all that matters. Just bear in mind that with an installed system that's designed well, you could have more power for things like a fridge/freezer, diesel heater fan, electric blanket, more powerful devices/computer, etc. Things you can live without, but might wonder why you went without them after having them. For me, having a freezer in the car set to -4F when it was 119F in Quartzsite, convinced me to never skimp on power when camping. My specific car can do that without solar, having its own big lithium battery and ability to recharge it to 80% using the engine using gasoline even when not driving. I had brought 60W of portable solar, but didn't even use it when in the vicinity of the car.
I haven't decided yet if I watch your videos for your words of wisdom or just to stare at your van. It's the only one I've seen that actually looks like a little house I love it. And yes I do listen to you ✌

For a long time I just had those power packs charged up before a trip, & while driving, a Luci light charged on the dash, and a power station that could run my CPAP 4-6 nights on one charge (turn off the humidifier in settings), later got a 60w folding solar panel to recharge power station every few days. I used a simple cooler camping for 40 years, then evolved to using frozen water bottles & a reflectix type bag I mastered the are of keeping a cooler cold enough to extend the life of food, etc. Now after 3 years of a cooler in my PMC cargo minivan I have a simple system 110w panel on roof to charge an AGM auxiliary battery to run a 25qt fridge & a few other items. I’m not likely to ever want to climb on my roof, so I don’t think of it as losing real estate… and I found a clam shell for the roof that won’t interfere with the solar if I decide I need extra storage for a long trip (this is a big deal for some people, but I’m resisting the storage for now due to wind resistance). Oh, there is a solenoid to charge the auxiliary battery while driving to solve the cloudy day problem… but no problem for everyone to do what works for them.

I don’t have solar for the same reasons, plus I look like a little work truck and want to remain stealth! The Connect is also very small. I have the Jackery 1000 and have never needed the solar panels. I decided to wait and see if I needed them and I never have. Great advice!
Good points . Also I'm thinking if you wanted to on a sunny day driving you could bungee your portable solar panels on your roof deck and charge up your jackery
K.I.S.S. is always the best approach to just about anything! However, I created a system that can be both depending on how long I am staying stationary (very rare!🤪) I missed those days when I didn't have the fridge. My power usage was minimal and no need for solar power panel! Great information Dee!😎👍
Well Done Dee. Your right, unless you need that kind of power for work or equipment; you really done need a solar panel power system. But more specifically for us Transit Connect owners - we are driving a van that is under powered and lacks a good braking system. Adding the additional weight of 1 -2 deep cycle batteries is additional weight we don’t need. In fact - even the large Jackery and similar batteries take up a lot of space (and weight). I use a Jackery 250 and have sufficient power to run my fan, lights and recharge phones, etc., for 3 days. Surely in 3 days, I can charge it back up off a portable panel, 110 service or 12 volts while driving.
This is exactly what we also do! You named all the arguments we also had for going the simple way. And an extra reason is that you can use the system in other places then in the van cos it's mobile, for example on the beach and lots of other practical uses.
Completely agree everything I have is portable because that’s what works for me 😇😇😇 power station and portable panel although if I lived in my camper I might think different plus there are two of us and it’s only for camping and road trips ❤️❤️❤️ thank you lady 🐞 out😇
I have 2 flexible 100w solar panels that live on straps by the ceiling. They produce more wattage than the 2 fixed 100w panels on the roof because I can take them out and aim them right at the sun.

I really appreciate this video. I have been feeling the pressure to to get them but the headache of drilling or installing them on my suv has been giving me headaches. I’ve been car camping with a foldable solar panel and a 500 watt generator for years. I upgraded to 1500 and for darn sure don’t need it since I only camp about one week a month. After watching this wider, I just realized I don’t need it I charge when I drive and always start a trip fully charged from home. I have minimal needs for electricity and I’m good, thank you you have saved me headaches and money.

I was an electronics technician in a past life, and so I do qualify as a rock star in this sense. I very much appreciate your perspective and way of living. What I would contribute is that solar is about as reliable a power source as it is possible to create. A 12v battery, a charge controller and a solar panel is the minimalist system which then provides power whenever the sun shines. Sufficient battery to get one through the inevitable lack of sunshine. Of course an all in one power station is the easy alternative. 😊 We all make choices. Mine will be a class c with perhaps 1000 watts up on the roof, and a built-in 4kw generator to charge when the sun doesn't shine. The love of my life is my 20 year old special needs daughter who will travel with me often so my needs are different. I watch your channel and store away your wisdom for when I will inevitably need it.
Lol…sounds like you most definitely are! If I had that knowledge it would be something I’d do too. I just have seen so many out here who have systems they don’t understand get frustrated and stuck without power because they don’t. I do want to learn more. I use jackery with a 100 watt panel with 8mm plug running through back door. Plus with stuff on roof, like having a awning and keeps van cool in summer😎. Love that deck on your van.
Nice! Yeah, my deck actually acts like a shade-it was a fringe benefit that I didn’t realize until I had it for a while. The airflow through the bottom acts as a little cooler. And my metal roof doesn’t get hot which keeps the whole van cooler.

I agree on all points. I have an RV and wouldn't drill holes in the roof. Every hole will eventually create an entry point for water sometime down the road. Recharging a jackery (spelled correctly?) with solar panels is plenty for spare power. You wanna be in control as much as possible. And your deck is the bomb!!👍🙂
Hello Dee. I am with you. I do not want to have to park my Little Red Van, AKA, Tin box or Oven, directly in the sun in order to charge panels. Right now I am mostly camping with Hook Ups, at least electric as I prefer State, County and City parks, but, I will soon be getting a small Jackery Type thing with a small panel to charge it. For me, the biggest reason to not do any mounted system is I want simple. I have owned almost every type of RV there is. The systems always break, and they are costly to repair. I am really not able to fix most of the issues. Even if I had the tools and the knowledge, I am 60 and cannot contort myself in the ways often needed to get behind cabinets and such to repair systems that have broken. In all my RV's the systems that I constantly had issues with were, Water and Electric. I have no desire to put any of those in my tiny van.
I'm in a Transit Connect too, the roof real estate is scarce. I have a eco flo delta pro it's can hold a charge for my use for up to 3 days without a recharge. When I need a recharge I can get one from a campsite or even a EV charge station bc I have an adapter for that. I can also use a 12v trickle charger while I drive.
Hey Dee, I dont need any solar panels because I have small power stations for my phone and my house battery is connected to the van battery, so it charges automatically when I am driving. However I have just bought a little power bank to charge my tools and things because I make junk jewellery and I dont have any power source in my studio. It works fabulously and to keep it powered I will use a solar panel, and it can be powered from inside if the panel is by the window. Oh life is good !
Thank you for teaching and sharing what's possible. Simplicity, cost and possibilities are what's most important for "camping". I am researching what's best for me in my future van life. Complicated, expensive and impractical methods strike me as a sales tactic from "influencers" to sell things that aren't always necessary for everyone. I bought a travel trailer a couple of years ago and it turns out that as lovely as it is as a tiny home, it's cumbersome and not to easy to deal with for this senior camper. Now I have to sell it and start over, but we learn as we go. ✌
I have a fixed system in my build, But I can appreciate that other people have smaller electricity and space needs, I like in the United Kingdom, so you must think its even madder to spend money on solar when all we have is rain! Lol! That said I like the idea of having FREE power and I will always back it up with a DC to DC charger to charge from the engine via the starter battery. I heard Bob Wells say once "I want to park in the shade sometimes." He suggested running solar off your van so you had flecibility and could park in the shade.
For a practitioner of simplicity and minimalism, not having a refrigerator would be a very deliberate choice, not an afterthought, or sacrifice. Having a refrigerator comes with its own set of considerations. For some of us, having the refrigerator is not worth the lost in ease of living or peace of mind. The goal and priority is to eat healthfully. It is possible to eat healthfully without a refrigerator, though perhaps not as conveniently. 😊
Well said, Dee! Everyone has to decide what matters to them and what they are prepared to deal with. We are going to be building out something like a Chevy Express hopefully sometime soon, so we would have room to have a fixed solar panel on the roof, but we don't want one for the very reasons you mention. Totally agree with you (in our opinion and for our own personal reasons and requirements).
We all live differently and have our own ways to survive on the road, no matter if its permanent solar or portable solar.. Its what you are comfortable with and can afford . I have a Jackery 500 and some small batteries and works great for myself as a part timer. 😀✌️I do think if I was a full timer I would need to consider my options... 😊
I think the same way…I can used my Jackery in my cabin, @ my condo in a power outage…it can travel with me in any vehicle. Also I don’t want to climb on top to clean it or clear it off. Inside my van works best for me too!!!
i totally agree with you. my brother and sis in law are definitely fans of the fixed solar but he also understands a lot of it and yes, the batteries are huge! i had a system like that on a rig i used to have. But i like having a simple set up and that's what i go with now, a jackery and two 100-watt solar panels. i have a 50 watt solar panel on top of my truck camper but it was put there before i bought it. and my fridge is 12 volt so it essentially keeps that charged and when i'm not plugged in, i use solar powered lights or battery operated lights inside the small camper to keep it lit and not rely on the 12 volt battery in my rig. Also, i'm a simple girl, not handy at all (like you are!) so simple is better.
The more complicated something is, the greater the likelihood of something going wrong.. simple solutions are always favourable for me. Glad you are happy with your choices. Isn’t it a shame that you had to qualify them for your audience. I hope you’re not receiving unkind, unpleasant comments. xx

Very sound logic. I had a leisure battery and small fixed solar system for a while but hardly used it and the cons were as you outline. So, other sources for my vehicle and same for my caravan and 60’ boat! More with less - good principle.
I prefer my Jackery and solar panels to set outside as well. My needs are very simple. I do have a CPAP but my Jackery can power it for 2 nights no problem and 3 if I wasn’t charging phones and laptop too. Such a cute little opossum 😍 one of my favorite critters!
My van already had one when I bought it! And yesterday was rainy and I had no solar, lol. But luckily I have a jackery300. Since I’m just getting started I’m finding out the very things you’re talking about 🙌 I had to clean off a ton of pollen on mine😅. I’m getting ready to get a second battery tho so I can have an extra charged one .
I agree with everything you said. I like that deck up top. Too bad you can't put a chair up there. I noticed the pine cones on the ground. The big heavy ones, falling from a tree will destroy anything it hits. So be careful and that possum is a reminder that you could run into any creature or stranger when by yourself. My suggestion is get trained up in firearms. It's fun and one more thing you can do is go to nearby ranges and target shoot. It's a blast.

I was one who wanted to install solar panels when I began van life almost two years ago. I have not found the need for them. My two Jackery units and one 4Patriots unit get recharged while driving and I do not any devices other than my Alpicool C20 refrigerator that requires a lot of juice to run. After seeing your rooftop deck I decided that is more of a priority. This spring I will install the deck myself. A small camp chair and a side table with a soft bag cooler will be all I need up there. Your deck idea is awesome 👌.

Right there with you sister. We have about the same setup. The lower maintenance, space and monetary savings far outweigh all the headaches that come with a fixed panel solar system.

Myself, I went with a high quality 90w German Mono adhesive panel in 2014 when I knew I would be boon-docking for 4+ days at the Midwest Renewable Energy Association Fair (Custer WI). It was for running a compressor fridge, which sips power. Performed great because I went with a Genasun controller and Valence 130Ah LFP battery. One good day of sun and it will run for a weeks worth of shade. And, it was a net zero weight gain, as I replaced my size 27 lead-acid coach battery with a

I have similar energy needs. I charge my phone, ipad, laptop and usb devices like small fans and lights. I have used a portable system and usually recharge it when driving. I have solar panels that I can set up wherever, but rarely have to use them. They are more of a backup. It is helpful to let folks know there are alternative ways of doing things that can work just fine. I think it is important to think about what your priorities are and then think about what you are able/willing to do to meet those. Sometimes this might mean adjusting and letting go of some things for more freedom or ease of use/build. Thanks, as always, for the supportive content. LOVED the possum! He was such a cool dude!

I’m with you! I wouldn’t want something that I couldn’t easily replace/change out. The fixed panels, batteries, inverter systems look like a challenge if something stops working. If you don’t live close to an expert - you are done.

Sometimes I think people go for the "cool factor" rather than a more practical solution. I am so glad I don't have anything on my roof. My partner and I had solar on our TT and we burnt up in the sun. In my truck, I can park in the shade a be cool. I will admit I just bought a small generator to help in bad weather to charge the batteries. I lived through 8 straight weeks of rain while living and camping in AK for 4.5 months. THAT situation will make you think of more possibilities

I have chosen the same thing for my small slide-in camper on my 5 foot bed Tacoma. What I also like about the movable solar panels is that in Spring and Fall, the sun being low, I am able to place them at the perfect angle. Thank you for another interesting video!

I absolutely do love the simplicity of your type of set up. I think that if it was only me travelling without my little one, perhaps I could do the same. Both my kids are gamers, and Alexis loves to continue to keep in touch with her friends via gaming while we travel, so we fall into the category of needing extra power.
Maybe one day my set up will be simpler… but then I keep thinking of the ability to store ice cream. 🤣

As someone who does a month or so per year of vanlife (but in a Prius Prime) your own solution is almost exactly what I do. My own main reason is not wanting to mess up the perfect aerodynamics and perfect stealth of my car.
You already have a deck which looks exactly like solar panels, with exactly the stealth/aerodynamic losses of solar panels. So, if I had your van setup, that deck would be solar panels, either of the walk-on variety to double as a deck, or with some arrangement for stowing the deck under it and being able to put the deck over it when desired, or hinge the panels up to reveal the deck below, or something like that. I'd find a spot (maybe up under the dashboard, in the fenders, under the deck, or in the engine compartment) to install the guts of a house electrical system: charge controller, DC-DC charger, inverter, LiFePO4 battery. And I'd add in a good air compressor and good way of jump starting the van, also. But messing with electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and heating stuff is something I have long done as a DIYer and engineer, so something tucked away in bits and pieces is something in my skill set and comfort zone, and there is no shame about it not being in yours. We all have very different specialties and skill sets, and the French have a nice phrase celebrating that.
You're not wrong to stay in your comfort zone. Even a van builder like Jonnie is justified in going with a packaged solution like the Bluetti of the customer's choice. It's not too limiting, and it's easy to replace the whole thing if it breaks down. Simple is good. But on the other hand, it's not making perfect use of a specific vehicle's space, nor is it taking advantage of integrating as well as possible with the vehicle's own systems.
Your own power station is small enough that charging it from the van's 12V cigarette lighter port while driving, probably doesn't cause you to run the van much extra, just to be charging. With a bigger power station or house batteries, the 12V outlet just requires the engine to be on for too long, so then you have to go to using an inverter on the vehicle battery, or a DC-DC charger on the vehicle battery to speed things up.
Being happy with your solution is all that matters. Just bear in mind that with an installed system that's designed well, you could have more power for things like a fridge/freezer, diesel heater fan, electric blanket, more powerful devices/computer, etc. Things you can live without, but might wonder why you went without them after having them. For me, having a freezer in the car set to -4F when it was 119F in Quartzsite, convinced me to never skimp on power when camping. My specific car can do that without solar, having its own big lithium battery and ability to recharge it to 80% using the engine using gasoline even when not driving. I had brought 60W of portable solar, but didn't even use it when in the vicinity of the car.

For a long time I just had those power packs charged up before a trip, & while driving, a Luci light charged on the dash, and a power station that could run my CPAP 4-6 nights on one charge (turn off the humidifier in settings), later got a 60w folding solar panel to recharge power station every few days. I used a simple cooler camping for 40 years, then evolved to using frozen water bottles & a reflectix type bag I mastered the are of keeping a cooler cold enough to extend the life of food, etc. Now after 3 years of a cooler in my PMC cargo minivan I have a simple system 110w panel on roof to charge an AGM auxiliary battery to run a 25qt fridge & a few other items. I’m not likely to ever want to climb on my roof, so I don’t think of it as losing real estate… and I found a clam shell for the roof that won’t interfere with the solar if I decide I need extra storage for a long trip (this is a big deal for some people, but I’m resisting the storage for now due to wind resistance). Oh, there is a solenoid to charge the auxiliary battery while driving to solve the cloudy day problem… but no problem for everyone to do what works for them.

I don’t have solar for the same reasons, plus I look like a little work truck and want to remain stealth! The Connect is also very small. I have the Jackery 1000 and have never needed the solar panels. I decided to wait and see if I needed them and I never have. Great advice!

However, I created a system that can be both depending on how long I am staying stationary (very rare!🤪) I missed those days when I didn't have the fridge. Well Done Dee. Your right, unless you need that kind of power for work or equipment; you really done need a solar panel power system. But more specifically for us Transit Connect owners - we are driving a van that is under powered and lacks a good braking system. Adding the additional weight of 1 -2 deep cycle batteries is additional weight we don’t need. In fact - even the large Jackery and similar batteries take up a lot of space (and weight). I use a Jackery 250 and have sufficient power to run my fan, lights and recharge phones, etc., for 3 days. Surely in 3 days, I can charge it back up off a portable panel, 110 service or 12 volts while driving.

This is exactly what we also do! You named all the arguments we also had for going the simple way. And an extra reason is that you can use the system in other places then in the van cos it's mobile, for example on the beach and lots of other practical uses.

I really appreciate this video. I have been feeling the pressure to to get them but the headache of drilling or installing them on my suv has been giving me headaches. I’ve been car camping with a foldable solar panel and a 500 watt generator for years. I upgraded to 1500 and for darn sure don’t need it since I only camp about one week a month. After watching this wider, I just realized I don’t need it I charge when I drive and always start a trip fully charged from home. I have minimal needs for electricity and I’m good, thank you you have saved me headaches and money.

I was an electronics technician in a past life, and so I do qualify as a rock star in this sense. I very much appreciate your perspective and way of living.
What I would contribute is that solar is about as reliable a power source as it is possible to create. A 12v battery, a charge controller and a solar panel is the minimalist system which then provides power whenever the sun shines. Sufficient battery to get one through the inevitable lack of sunshine.
Of course an all in one power station is the easy alternative. 😊
We all make choices. Mine will be a class c with perhaps 1000 watts up on the roof, and a built-in 4kw generator to charge when the sun doesn't shine.
The love of my life is my 20 year old special needs daughter who will travel with me often so my needs are different.

I use jackery with a 100 watt panel with 8mm plug running through back door. Plus with stuff on roof, like having a awning and keeps van cool in summer😎. Love that deck on your van.
Nice! Yeah, my deck actually acts like a shade-it was a fringe benefit that I didn’t realize until I had it for a while. The airflow through the bottom acts as a little cooler. And my metal roof doesn’t get hot which keeps the whole van cooler.

I agree on all points. I have an RV and wouldn't drill holes in the roof. Every hole will eventually create an entry point for water sometime down the road. Recharging a jackery (spelled correctly?) with solar panels is plenty for spare power. You wanna be in control as much as possible. And your deck is the bomb!!👍🙂

Hello Dee. I am with you. I do not want to have to park my Little Red Van, AKA, Tin box or Oven, directly in the sun in order to charge panels. Right now I am mostly camping with Hook Ups, at least electric as I prefer State, County and City parks, but, I will soon be getting a small Jackery Type thing with a small panel to charge it. For me, the biggest reason to not do any mounted system is I want simple. I have owned almost every type of RV there is. The systems always break, and they are costly to repair. I am really not able to fix most of the issues. Even if I had the tools and the knowledge, I am 60 and cannot contort myself in the ways often needed to get behind cabinets and such to repair systems that have broken. In all my RV's the systems that I constantly had issues with were, Water and Electric. I have no desire to put any of those in my tiny van.

I'm in a Transit Connect too, the roof real estate is scarce. I have a eco flo delta pro it's can hold a charge for my use for up to 3 days without a recharge. When I need a recharge I can get one from a campsite or even a EV charge station bc I have an adapter for that. I can also use a 12v trickle charger while I drive.

Hey Dee, I dont need any solar panels because I have small power stations for my phone and my house battery is connected to the van battery, so it charges automatically when I am driving. However I have just bought a little power bank to charge my tools and things because I make junk jewellery and I dont have any power source in my studio. It works fabulously and to keep it powered I will use a solar panel, and it can be powered from inside if the panel is by the window. Oh life is good !

Thank you for teaching and sharing what's possible. Simplicity, cost and possibilities are what's most important for "camping". I am researching what's best for me in my future van life. Complicated, expensive and impractical methods strike me as a sales tactic from "influencers" to sell things that aren't always necessary for everyone. I bought a travel trailer a couple of years ago and it turns out that as lovely as it is as a tiny home, it's cumbersome and not to easy to deal with for this senior camper. Now I have to sell it and start over, but we learn as we go. ✌

I have a fixed system in my build, But I can appreciate that other people have smaller electricity and space needs, I like in the United Kingdom, so you must think its even madder to spend money on solar when all we have is rain! Lol!
That said I like the idea of having FREE power and I will always back it up with a DC to DC charger to charge from the engine via the starter battery.

For a practitioner of simplicity and minimalism, not having a refrigerator would be a very deliberate choice, not an afterthought, or sacrifice. Having a refrigerator comes with its own set of considerations. For some of us, having the refrigerator is not worth the lost in ease of living or peace of mind. The goal and priority is to eat healthfully. It is possible to eat healthfully without a refrigerator, though perhaps not as conveniently. 😊
Yes. Refrigerators are probably one of the biggest drains. Not having one is definitively a deliberate choice I made on many levels.

Everyone has to decide what matters to them and what they are prepared to deal with. We are going to be building out something like a Chevy Express hopefully sometime soon, so we would have room to have a fixed solar panel on the roof, but we don't want one for the very reasons you mention.

i totally agree with you. my brother and sis in law are definitely fans of the fixed solar but he also understands a lot of it and yes, the batteries are huge! i had a system like that on a rig i used to have. But i like having a simple set up and that's what i go with now, a jackery and two 100-watt solar panels. i have a 50 watt solar panel on top of my truck camper but it was put there before i bought it. and my fridge is 12 volt so it essentially keeps that charged and when i'm not plugged in, i use solar powered lights or battery operated lights inside the small camper to keep it lit and not rely on the 12 volt battery in my rig. Also, i'm a simple girl, not handy at all (like you are!) so simple is better.

Very sound logic. I had a leisure battery and small fixed solar system for a while but hardly used it and the cons were as you outline. So, other sources for my vehicle and same for my caravan and 60’ boat! More with less - good principle.
Yep! I think it feels scary for some to imagine. But once you figure out simple ways to manage certain things, it really is not that hard🤗
I prefer my Jackery and solar panels to set outside as well. My needs are very simple. I do have a CPAP but my Jackery can power it for 2 nights no problem and 3 if I wasn’t charging phones and laptop too. Such a cute little opossum 😍 one of my favorite critters!

And yesterday was rainy and I had no solar, lol. But luckily I have a jackery300. Since I’m just getting started I’m finding out the very things you’re talking about 🙌 I had to clean off a ton of pollen on mine😅. I’m getting ready to get a second battery tho so I can have an extra charged one .
But I have to say it has come in handy a couple of times to charge up my Jackery , haha
I can use that little Jackery for everything I need, really.

I agree with everything you said. I like that deck up top. Too bad you can't put a chair up there.
I noticed the pine cones on the ground. The big heavy ones, falling from a tree will destroy anything it hits. So be careful and that possum is a reminder that you could run into any creature or stranger when by yourself.
My suggestion is get trained up in firearms. It's fun and one more thing you can do is go to nearby ranges and target shoot. It's a blast.

I was one who wanted to install solar panels when I began van life almost two years ago. I have not found the need for them. My two Jackery units and one 4Patriots unit get recharged while driving and I do not any devices other than my Alpicool C20 refrigerator that requires a lot of juice to run. After seeing your rooftop deck I decided that is more of a priority. This spring I will install the deck myself. A small camp chair and a side table with a soft bag cooler will be all I need up there. Your deck idea is awesome 👌.
