This video is a culmination of many months of research into the world of Rust. I don't know what the back-story really is, this is all at best speculation and the true story is firmly in the hands of the developers to reveal to us when they're ready.

Watching this in 2024 makes a lot more sense now…
The biggest secret is the question why I find this in my suggestions, 4 years after release. As someone who has never played Rust and never plans to. An even bigger mystery might be the question why I've enjoyed this so thoroughly.
I was speaking to a friend of mine recently about the night sky of Rust while gazing at it beside a campfire and we had no idea there were real world correlations of constellations. The cross-crossing of truth is a comfortable fact. So, still our pale blue dot, after all. Cheers, Shadow! What a great film!

I would like to say that this video was beyond amazing.The choice of music in the video made each section of the documentary more immersive. To be honest I did not expect you to go so deep in to the lore, overall I genuinely enjoyed watching 25 mins of something in RUclips.

this is bloody brilliant, my one disagreement is who the inhabitants are. They aren't prisoners, they are military. Look at the insane skill set of these guys, survivalist, toolsmith, metalsmith, chemist, mechanic, machinist, expert marksman, parkour legends, tailor, engineer, architect, pilot, the list is crazy, these guys are the worlds top of the top special forces...now the question is why are they here?

This was an impressive backstory, because you even attempted to explain the _GAMEPLAY_ mechanics. How we respawn. Most theories on any video game ever either have weak reasoning, or ignore it as "It's just for the sake of gameplay."

Impressive theory, solid work, and with the evidence you got, this is pretty neat to think about it, and i've always enjoyed lore that attempts to explain that, like Dark Souls

I was really intrigued by the the structures in Rust’s worlds. They seemed to have so much history behind them. This video was exactly what I needed.

Take it as a stylish way to say "unexplicably at the time when it was first noticed" but given what he said before about the cobalt effects some studies were performed and we now know they respawn in the light of the regeneration power of cobalt. Why on the beach ? I make it a cobalt concentration matter in link with the presence of salt water. Too far on the sea is too much salt and too deep in the land is too much radiations in the air (still too small amounts to affect you, hence no radiation poisoning everywhere, but enough to prevent the reaction leading to regeneration). That s my "open minded" take on it :)

This is a very interesting theory, especially how you explained the respawning.
Honestly as thought out as this backstory is what really made me interested in the world was imagining that there is a major war going on in the world or at least that society has fallen. You and others have survived a shipwreck or a plane crash and you wash up on the island. We then get a lord of the flies situation where you try to survive and dominate the other survivors.
I thought that maybe the survivors on the island are ex employees that were promised immortality as seen on the poster since cobalt industries was running out of funding and test subjects so they were forced to test on their own employees. Maybe after they were made immortal the subjects were abandoned while the owner fleed because of the change to democracy near him. Later the subjects realised that it was a living hell and over all that time on the island not being able to die they became the savages we see on the island due to the mental helltl they were going through thats why they defaced the poster of the owner and the word immortality then later the us government discovered the island and decided to conduct research maybe the air drops are meant to be for the scientists but you have alot more evidence than me also great video

Things that I find interesting:
When you kill a scientist and harvest the corpse you only get cloth and bones but no human meat.
Effectively every player that spawns is automatically a super genius that can create ANYTHING merely from spare parts. Not only that every player is a highly skilled killer with nerve of steel.
Research Under Supervised Test - The island environment could be an ongoing research project being carried out by Cobalt in coordination with the U.S. government to test the science behind what the Cobalt company is attempting to perfect. The back story you told all checks out and it is likely that the U.S. came in and took the island over from Russia in order to harness the technology for themselves.

Did I enjoy the video? No, I absolutely loved it! I seen a heap of Rust content out there, but this video is BY FAR the best one. Raiding, PVP, building and roleplay dwarven in comparison to this. It is an absolute masterpiece! Kudos to you Shadowfrax!!

What is below the island is a device that is basically a huge peltier module (it uses electricity to heat one side up to high temps and cool the other side up to sub zero temps). What if they discovered a new way to make electicity and peltier effect is a side effect of that.

here is my theory on the living situation. It would make sense that they would have some form of transportation for the employees to get from their quarters to their work locations and back. So that is what I believe the underground train tunnels are meant for. There are tons of sealed off doors at the various train stops and so it would make sense for the living quarters to be behind those doors. The train stops are also typically situated near each monument so that also helps support the idea that this was meant for employee transport.

Some of which I had not looked into at all... Some of which I share the sentiments of.... All of which I enjoyed hearing.
However, my theory is a concept that diverges into a bit of a different realm and, after seeing this, I now desire to put a lot more effort into going from simple basic concept theory to researched hypothesis. Thank you for such a wildly wonderful and well put-together video.

what if rust made a kind of Rust story mode. Ones started in a cell and has to fight you way out of prison in the attempt to get away from all human trials and experiments. One therefore had to find keycards and open doors to new spaces to find weapons and kill all the scientists who protected the prison.
