A whipping boy wasn’t a boy who whipped others but rather a boy that was whipped or caned in place of the prince, mainly it was for the crown prince. At the time there was rules against striking royalty, so the tutors of the royal family would bring in another boy that would become the princes play mate and friend, this was normally the son of a nobleman. The thinking behind it was that rather than the prince behaving himself to avoid physical pain that he’d behave himself to avoid seeing his friend in pain as the punishment was done in front of the prince. The reason that it was a role often given to a nobleman’s son is because often the prince and the whipping boy would become close friends and that plus the guilt the prince might have felt would mean that the whipping boy would grow up to become a powerful man because he would have the ear of the king. The term “he’s a whipping boy” refers to someone who takes abuse or punishment so someone else that is more powerful or connected to someone powerful doesn’t have to in exchange for favour later on.
I find it fascinating that the Founding Fathers of the United States knew that the Crown held as an option for punishment drawing, hanging and quartering. I understand it was on the books until 1781-meaning the signers of the Declaration of Independence were truly heroic. As Benjamin Franklin said: "We hang together or we will all hang separately."
@@ElectricityDisco We committed the worst, but we can't forget what the Lenupe tribe did in 1764, the Enoch Brown Massacre. But still what they did pales in what we did
Shouldn't B. Our forefathers were British subjects. Knew all about English punishment methods. That's 1 of the reasons our laws R written 2 stop cruel & unusual punishment. Why generation punishment 4 your father's crime was abolished. Why a quick execution was adopted & a humane form of punishment was instituted 4 most other crimes. And the Bill of Rights is included in our Constitution. The British were a cruel people more so than other European countries & historically has been. It wasn't until after our Revolution that humanizing criminal punishment took hold world wide.
If you want to see a gibbet then visit the village of Elsdon in Northumberland. There's a replica of the one used to display the body of the murderer William Winter , complete with model head in this spectacular setting. Winter's ghost is also said to haunt the area.
Thank God i was not there in Tudor England. Otherwise i would have to witness such brutal executions and torture. A normal person will become insane or devil watching this.
I think one of the worst was the strapping onto a person held prostrate, stripped of clothing and bound to a wooden board, a animal cage containing a starved large rat. The only way the starving rat could escape was to gnaw its way thru the belly of the victim and burrow its way out.
Only the ones granted the Men's Butts Discount were reprieved. Very rare. I believe there were only 3 people ever who were given the MBD by the monarch 👑 back then.
They are all dead, so kind of hard for that to happen. No matter how awful these people were, they've helped shape our world as it is today, for the better.
I understand your stance. However, as Christians, we understand the punishment in heaven for people like this. But we're not the ones to judge on this earth. Your statement is true, as the one true GOD will judge them. But it's not for us to judge when it definitely is not of our time. Hitler and Stalin are fair game as we definitely can judge their atrocities. But your talking about a time of total bias in written record because the only written record came from limited source. Henry the 8th may have been an absolute heathen in the eyes of GOD, but we'll never know the extent because of limited literacy.
I can’t help but think that these brutal punishments would most certainly be a useful deterrent today …..I feel that the judiciary system is much to lenient with criminal charges………. Yes ?
I was thinking about what you said about how cutting off the hand is still a practice in some parts of the world and I don't believe that we are somehow exceptional so I think there must have to be a sort of natural selection of ideas happening and like with natural selection environment matters. For example: something as crucial to society as we know it as Magna Carta could not happen without King John's general dodginess. The Barons would not have united against the crown without that stimulus.
Would be interesting to learn what were the Most Unusual or Most Uncommon punishment methods throughout the different periods of history. Most history watchers are aware of the Most Horrific as they are the most publicized in literature, illustrations, artworks, documentaries and films.
Henry VIII was the King of violent times and he did what he had been brought up to do. Its not 21st century rules being applied to a violent period of not only English but also European history. Just refer to the Papal or Spainish Inquisition if you want brutality

The founding fathers also committed even worse atrocities on native Americans. So LOL. Is this really that fascinating?

Humanity has to be the biggest letdown in the universe. I really hope there aren't any 'intelligent' life forms like us in other galaxies.
I have to agree! Sad, but probably true!
Without a doubt.

Actually White Liberals. Not all humanity.

Such a terror of a monarch sometimes I think does England still need the Royal family? They should live as commoners

Yes but at least Hitler was voted into power.

Henry’s shoulder appear to be about 6 feet wide, which means in reality he probably had puny ones
Branding of deserters and cowards during the Civil war quite common.
