Thank you so much for doing Heart, especially the deeper cuts, not just the hits that everyone does.
I'm loving the fact that he fell for the music of Ann & Nancy, and the band, and that he's doing a lot of the deep tracks that sometimes means more to us rabid fans than the hits. Just really enjoying going back down the Heart rabbit hole.
An awesome song sung by both of the Wilson sisters. Nancy sings the bridge or the refrain:
“Out here on the frontline
Our territory is nighttime
We walk the jungle line
We stay alive”
while Ann belts out the rest of the song. Many people do not know Nancy sings in this song. This is an awesome opening song for a Heart concert as I witnessed it in 1987.
The most underrated song by Heart! Thank you for acknowledging that.
Just more proof on how much of a powerhouse Ann is on vocals.
Ann is a damn vocal titan beast !
Everything Heart ever did that isn't Barracuda or Magic Man or Alone is underrated. There are sooooo many gems in their catalog that are every bit as good as their biggest hits but nobody outside of diehard fans even listens to them anymore. Thank you for reacting to this
Went to see them on the Bad Animals and Brigade tours. They were so good live too. They both have epic voices
Of course, you can always listen to Heart doing this live. They opened the Bad Animals tour with this song. It's even bigger and badder live! Check out the Heart Live in Portland 1987 concert (easy to find on RUclips) and hear how they opened that tour. It's a beast of a performance!!!
Great song! Good to see it get some love.
Thanks for doing this song - like many of the comments here, it is one Heart's best songs, ever. The mid-tempo balancing the huge vocals, guitar, drums etc, a song that only true virtuosos can write. Heart opened with this song during the Bad Animals tour, and I still remember it like it was yesterday. One of those things I am so grateful for having seen in my lifetime. There's a live bootleg video from this tour if you do some digging. Check it out.
So underrated and I was glad! As an avid Heart fan, the deeper cuts are exceptional!
Oh yes! Wayyyy underrated. Agree with Howard. One of my all time favorites, not just of Heart, but period!!! It’s not fast tempo, but if you connect with the alienated EMOTION and lyrics of the song and hit a heavy bag with ALL YOU’VE GOT, in time with the word “bad,” imagining you ARE a “bad animal,” it doesn’t get more powerful than that! ❤️✌🏻✌🏻❤️
I got to see this tour while stationed at Fort Bliss, Tx (El Paso) in 87. You should look into their last original studio album "Fanatic" from 2012.
Pat Benatar! Promises in the Dark, and Fire and Ice.
Who Will You Run To is my favorite song on this album.
That crashing sound was probably made with a fairlight.
Have never heard this either! Damn, go Ann 😍
🤘❤🤘 Sweet Reaction! I was 15 when this album came out. I remember standing in line, over night, at Tower Records to buy it. Then buying all the rock magazines to get as much information on the album as possible, including the fan club letter sent out & signed by all 5 members of Heart. Bad Animals, the song, was written by all 5 members... Ann, Nancy, Howard, Mark and Denny. The song is about them. "Bad Bad Bad Boys and Dangerous Girls". Technically, Heart didn't become just Ann & Nancy until their 2004 album, Jupiter's Darling. Even after Mark & Denny were fired in 1992 & 93, Howard remained an original member until he left in 1998. According to their autobiography.😁
Nice analysis with some great observations. Bad Animals is actually written by the entire band, not just Ann and Nancy, which was rare. Also, that beautiful bright part is sung by Nancy. Ann sang the dark, loud parts and Nancy sang the sweeter sounding major key parts. Part of the problem in the 80s was that all the record company wanted from Heart was power ballads with videos featuring Nancy's breasts. That album has some great moments, but none as great as the title cut. Capitol Records suppressed all the great heavy music the band made during those years and released overly commercial power ballads and pop rockers and in my opinion the best tracks on all those 80s and early 90s albums were left as album tracks while the power ballads were all sent to radio. Thankfully AOR stations that focused on harder rock picked up cuts like this, but Top 40 radio was busy playing "Alone". Of the four singles released from this album two were ballads (the 4th single that stiffed was awful, IMO) one was an Ann-sung pop rocker, and one was a Nancy-sung song that was almost dance-rock. All of those songs were pretty much forced on them by the record company and none were written by the band. This albu, the previous album, and the one after it all had some great tunes that were ignored by Capitol. If it weren't for AOR radio the heavier songs would have gotten no airplay. It damaged the band's rock credibility bigtime because Capitol only wanted one thing from them, or two if you count Nancy's breasts (or maybe that's three things total).
MY GAWD!!! This band and this song Would overwhelm the world if this was released today
Lead Women with Great Everything!!! We NEED THIS SO BAD NOW!!! 2024 Bows to 1987
THIS is Feminisms Peak
It wasn't released as a single because it would have gotten very little airplay on Top 40 stations and sold poorly. Love the whole album, every song on it. Far as singles go "Easy Target" might have worked, and I think "You Ain't So Tough" has hit written all over it. Catchy as all hell and screams single. I think you'd really like it. For sheer drama and vocal power "Wait For An Answer" and "RSVP" are awesome.
They should have at least sent it to Album Rock radio -- it would have gotten tons of airplay on hard rock stations. In fact that's the first place I ever heard it, but since Capitol only pushed the power ballads at radio a lot of great tracks like this got left behind. It sucks because this is the best pure rock song on the album and sounds more like true Heart than anything else.
Labels usually don't send singles to album rock stations, they send a full album and the stations play what they like from them. Salvo was asking about Top 40, and Bad Animals just isn't Top 40 material. Most harder rock soundings songs aren't. Top 40 stations play whatever gets airplay and sells as a single, all genres...pop, rock, country, r & b, dance, jazz...whatever. You usually wouldn't hear a heavy rock song on Top 40 any more than you'd hear a super twangy country song. As for Capitol pushing ballads, after Alone hit #1(smart move on their part) the 2nd hit was "Who Will You Run To" (uptempo rocker #7) and the 3rd hit was "There's The Girl" (also an uptempo song #12).
@@brentgunderson1349 Yes they do, all the time. They are promotional singles. Black on Black II was sent to rock radio as a promo single but was never a proper single in the US. Same for Tall Dark Handsome Stranger, Wild Child, and The Night.
@@brentgunderson1349 You're wrong, they send tracks to radio for promotion ever single week. You think Comfortably Numb was ever a single? No it wasn't but everyone knows it because it was promo'ed to AOR stations. Same from All My Love and about 30 other tracks from Led Zeppelin. Same for a number of Heart songs including Mistral Wind and Wild Child.
Point being, they aren't sent to be presented as commercially available singles. AOR stations are known for playing long versions and deep cuts from albums. Personally, I'd think it pointless to send a bunch of "promo" singles of say a Led Zeppelin album when every rock station is immediately going to have the whole album and go nuts playing anything and everything off it. Seems like a waste of time and money to me. Same with Heart or Pink Floyd or any other known quantity in the rock realm. But that's just IMO, it's their money to spend.
i guess their performance on this song is stronger than the song in itself, NOBODY could sing this song like ANN does. it's a great track but it is really different from thaerest of them on BAD ANIMALS,the album. probably it would have made better during the GRUNGE years.
This was the period that the record company pushed Nancy to the fore front. Ann was gaining weight, and the record company saw it as a problem. Same as bringing outside songwriters, more or less coercing the band to record these songs. Years later Ann and Nancy regretted going along with the record company wishes. Not that they had much choice at that time. It's a shame really.
My fav from this Album besides Bad Animals is "Wait For An Answer"
@@viktorsalazar9624 OMG...what a powerhouse vocal on that!!! Right till the end!!!
@@thomasdempsey721 it was also another Dalbello original. Of course Ann's vocals made her own. Powerhouse indeed! Little Queen's Dream of the Archer is another Gypsy ethereal classic...Ann's sustained note at the end give me chills each time!
Try Wait for An Answer....
Hi, new subscriber here. Please react to Gigi De Lana and the Gigi Vibes’ version of Fly Me to the Moon. It’s a pleasant surprise!
In this cover, she and her band completely changed it up to make it their own. It’s received a lot of international reactions based on their arrangement. She’s a fast rising star in the Philippines (singer, actress, model) but her passion is music and her RUclips channel is blowing up with an average of 2k new subscribers a day. She does covers as well as has her own album of original songs written by her and her band members. Her vocal versatility is amazing, she can sing any genre…from jazz all the way to rock. Check her out and let us know what you think. 😊
This album get 6-7 out of 10. It’s very tough to get decent songs for a 10 track album. It’s tough to write songs that have a certain similar DNA but yet with each track to sound different and yet unique. Pardon me, 6-7 is a pretty good score, and it’s doesn’t mean this album have 3 lousy songs! All the tracks are decent with few outstanding tracks and hidden jems!!!
I saw them live when this album was out... ABSOLUTY AWESOME,but sadly such a shamefully underrated band....😢
