Probably their most underrated song ( along with How Can I refuse ) and both among my favorites from them.
My favorite part of this video is when she breaks the phone receiver in half. Most people under 40 wouldn't know that those old phones were indestructable, and there's no way any human could break that in half.
No one ever notices that but it stuck out to me too. Those old phone receivers were made of lead or something, so that was pretty funny.
She's angry... her voice is conveying anger and fear and rage... the emotions they were feeling after John Lennon was shot and killed. It's very raw. Love this song. Their re-recording of it in 2016 was pretty interesting as well.
Frantic
I really disliked the re-recording. This original version is classic Heart and I wish they would have left the classics alone. The remake of Sweet Darlin was better but was still unnecessary because the original is classic. But I love this version. I do think that this album overall Ann's voice seems out of control a lot of the time. "Fast Times" was nothing more than Ann screaming silly lyrics and to me is the worst studio song Heart ever made, but her vocal overkill on that song is reminiscent of the rest of the album. Private Audition aside from this song and a couple of other was a really bad album IMO.
@@JPVM That's the perfect word for her vocals here. I couldn't quite think of the word, but that's it.
I love this song! Ann's voice is insane. One I really recommend from this album is Perfect Stranger. Beautiful powerful song I absolutely love it, it's in my top 5 Heart songs
I like the song but Ann's voice seems like she's singing above her range. It seems like she's screaming more than singing in some parts.
Great rhythm on this one. It was written about the death of John Lennon. There are great songs on this album, although it's not as solid as most other albums. "The Situation" is kinda of 80s prog and "Angels" and "One Word" are beautiful.
The strength and power of both these women never ceases to amaze me.
Ann Wilson is without question the best female Rock vocalist ever.
Yep. Raw!
The middle sounds a bit like another one of their tunes. Love Heart!
I played bass in the band Liasyn (Long Island, NY) back in the mid eighties. We played a bunch of Heart songs and introduced City's Burning to a lot of people. We all thought it was a great song. We're planning on a small reunion next year and City's Burning is the one Heart cover we're planning on doing. Over the years, I've met members of Heart tribute bands who didn't know the song. I was disappointed with the version on Beautiful Broken.
I thought the version on Beautiful Broken was poor and unnecessary. Even though it's not one of their bigger hits, most people who know CIty's Burning think of it as classic Heart, and you don't re-record classic songs. Same really goes for Sweet Darlin' although I thought the re-recorded version was ok. Unnecessary, but ok.
I wasn't very fond of this album, but City's Burning is a great track (the original, not the re-recording in 2016). Cheesy video but a lot of the early videos before MTV got big were that way, low budget. Ann did a lot of screaming on this album and some of it just was not very good for a vocalist of her caliber. This song is right on the line of screaming, but not nearly as bad as some of the other tracks on this record. A few really good songs, but overall this album houses the worst 3 Heart songs (in my humble opinion) ever. Very good reaction my friend!
First video I ever saw of Heart
A great song for her powerful voice is Rage from the Desire Walks On album.
ACDC like in her voice
The entire Passionworks album is great.
Don't forget about Stranded by Heart.
This should have been a bigger hit.
It wasn't a single. It's chart position was just Mainstream Rock airplay which came from Album Rock stations playing this track.
This is what the world was feeling after the Legend John Lennon was murdered after giving a psycho fan his autograph ! Lennon represented Peace & Love ❤ 😢 Still feel the anger as I write this.
I've always heard that this song was written because of Lennon's murder, but the lyrics to me make absolutely no sense when relating it to the Lennon situation. "Young man is angry, girl is afraid, he want to get high, and she wants to get paid"? How is that related to Lennon?
The guitar solo is good but I think they got caught up in the 80's video hype.
this isn't played much, thx for your RX. another one to try is 'Wild Child', that one isn't played much either. both are great!
He already did Wild Child.
This was a difficult Heart period for me. A lot of what they were doing felt clownish compared compared to the sophisticated music the had given us a couple of records before. I thought this was the end for them. It just about was.
I agree about some of the songs in this album like Private Audition and This Man is Mine, which sound clownish on purpose but it's a weird direction anyway. But City's Burning is pretty sophisticated in my opinion. I do think Ann's vocals on this (and almost the entire album) are a bit strident, and she has admitted it she was in her worst shape during this. It's a weird thing because her vocals are usually the main feature of Heart but I do think her vocals on most of the album kinda drag it down.
There are several clownish songs on this album. Bright Light Girl, Private Audition, and Fast Times are the three worst Heart songs I've ever heard. When This Man is Mine isn't one of the 3 worst songs on an album you know it's a bad album. I love Heart but this album was a mess.
What I do is I make a playlist of my favorite 5 songs from Private Audition with my favorite 5 songs from Passionworks and then I get a pretty good album
City's Burning
(Beat By) Jealousy
Johnny Moon
The Situation
How Can I Refuse
Angels
Language of Love
Love Mistake
Hey Darlin Darlin
One Word
I call it Private Passion lol
Allies or Ambush could get in there as well
@@Don-Jack I think you have something, there. I'm going to make that playlist. I always thought that "language of love" was foretelling of the Heart that was to come. I don't know why they remade it.
@@JavierParede while not among my favourites I like those three songs lmao especially Bright Light Girl and Private Audition. Not saying they're great but they're fun songs for me. This Man is Mine is one of my least favourite Heart songs along with All I Wanna Do is Make Love To You. Perfect Stranger is my favourite song from this album
I've never heard this song before. I love Heart but this was a little too much.
The song would probably sound better to you without this silly video.
Huh…never heard this before. Powerful song, BUT, IMO, not a good match for Ann’s voice. It’s basically “melodic” shouting ……as though she is singing in the style of, say, Steven Tyler or Brian Johnson. She’s such a vocal powerhouse with soaring melodies…and yeah, she can belt out Zeppelin with ease, but this song doesn’t give her any extended melodic line to work with. A good song, and a top vocalist….just not a good match, IMO.
If you think this is shouting you should listen to the song "Fast Times" from this album -- it's 3:00 minutes of Ann literally screaming extremely silly lyrics. It was written for the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High but for obvious reasons (when you hear it) wasn't used. For a singer as good as Ms. Ann it make me cringe. This record has a few very good songs and a lot of very bad songs. "Fast Times" is worth a listen if only to hear one of the very few songs that exist where Ann doesn't sound good.
