It must be a great joy for the father (Christoph) to see such talent. Magnificent voice: warm, soft, yet powerful over the full tessitura, poignant rendition. Piano also is wonderful, clear and quite supportive for the singer. In a nutshell, this is a massive performance, coming at par with those with Fischer Diskau. I never thought this could de be attainable.

Speaking as a former stage director, and composer of simple songs, however... The emotional intensity of Winterreise is such that I would never place the audience so close to the performer. He needs a "protective" space, and, we want to watch and hear him, not the audience. Plus, the accompanist comes across as an upstaging narcissus: the vivid shirt and weskit belong in a nightclub, not in an intense tragedy de facto performed by a solo artiste, working with the most sensitive and quirky of all instruments, i.e., the human voice. A little "sobriety" would be in order - and that includes leaving the sniggering outside the door, or back off.
Back again to the greatest performance of all time Swedish TV production of Winterreise with Peter Mattei accompanied by David Janssen - STUNNING! Only comparison wasa when Jean Pierre Rampal mesmerised an entire theatre in Italy with Debussy's La Mer! The Italians wouldn't let him off the stage... he got us back, 🤣. Now someone with means and method kindly give young Pregardien the exposure he so richly deserves...
A "duel" between him and Peter (Mattei) comes to mind... :)

Peregolesi lived only 23 years, yet his "Stabat Mater" and other works live forever. I write dramas and novels, etc., and compose simple hymns and songs... composing, even simple, short works, requires a completely level of concentration...Handel didn't eat for a week while composing Messiah, but at least he knew the maid set his food outside the door every day...at least he had that. Now as then, there is no support for the creative genius but when we die, what a grab for our work! The John and Catherine McArthur Foundation was set up for such, but was usurped and now arts, literature and music are gravely politicised and compromised, especially in the USA. Pregardien and Hyung-ki are shining lights for the future of great music.

Beautiful tenor voice. Typical tenor, can't resist a few ornamentations here and there...which are, indeed, lovely. Delightful surprise, but baritone Peter Mattei is still my Wintereise "supremo!" Look forward to hearing the remaining Liedern and young Pregardien, jr's interpretation of other great works. Bravo.

He's a tenor. They do that. Than after performing an outstanding work and bring the audience to our feet, and tears, etc., they will start lamenting the one nano second when they thought they were a microtone off. You can spot them around Lincoln Center - they're the ones wearing shirts and ties and little scarves in the hottest days of summer - protecting the ""instrument" so to speak. Absolutely lovable!!!

It occurred to me recently that the sudden and traumatic loss of the love of his life may have pushed the protagonist of the Winterreise into an episode of manic-depressive psychosis. He goes through extreme mood swings from deep depression (e.g., Gefror'ne Tränen, Wasserflut, Einsamkeit) to emotional highs (Der Stürmische Morgen) and even phantasies of divinity and omnipotence (Mut). He also has paranoid fantasies (Die Wetterfahne) and hallucinations (Irrlicht, Täuschung).
The end is ambiguous. Is Der Leiermann an allegory of death (suicide, freezing to death somewhere) or has he finally found a like-minded individual with whom he can share his thoughts and feelings and regain control over his life and his emotions? It's this ambiguity that makes the end so powerful and thought-provoking.

There is something archetypal about the figure of the Hurdy-Gurdy Man.
I recognize him as an image first encountered in my childhood.
    His origin is Eastern Europe.
Why do I think he might be Jewish?
    The Fiddler on The Roof.
    The Rag Picker.
    The Outcast
The Stranger among us who has looked upon things we all shy away from and so, we shy away from him all the while knowing he has something wise and terrible to teach us.
Someone recently said to me that more than being loved, we need to feel that we belong.
I thought about that and it feels right !
    Family,
    Religion,
    Nation,
    City
    Class
    Sexual orientation
    Local Sports Team
    College
    Fraternity
    Political party
These are things we belong to.
    We support them.
    We exalt them.
    We defend them.
We oppose those who attack them.
We feel elated when another member of our tribe succeeds.
What does it feel like when we belong to no group?
Who among us does not belong to any group?
    The beggar.
    The homeless
    The elderly living alone.
The black man in a white world.
    The mis-shapen
    The grotesque.
This is the Hurdy Gurdy man.....the Leiermann The one we fear most because he lives our greatest nightmare.
But when we are dying we feel the ultimate alone-ness.
We are alive but no longer belong to the world of the living.
Perhaps Schubert, who was dying when he wrote this, was making common cause with the Leiermann. Outcasts... together.
" May I come along? Will you play my song

The words are Mullers, but the emotional expression is so richly conveyed by Schubert. Who is more alienated, misinterpreted, plagiarised and abused than the creative genius. Not the interpretive genius, but the creative genius. It's as if academia can't wait for us to return to the Lord so they can plagiarise, shred and exploit our words for generations to come! Much of my work has been lost. Perhaps if I had returned to England...perhaps...

    • @gerlindemayer9645
      @gerlindemayer9645 7 месяцев назад

    • @Joggelschorsch
      @Joggelschorsch 7 месяцев назад
