The locusts come like a storm and an army envelops the fields spread over several kilometers in the blink of an eye and after that the farmer can do nothing. The locust heart clears its crop before its eyes and it is only a matter of minutes.
Islam Khan, a resident of a village in Lodhran, Punjab Province, Pakistan, witnessed the scene. A few days ago, a locust heart attacked his recently harvested cotton crop.
The locusts would have stayed on their area for only about 25 minutes, after which a cotton plant would have survived somewhere on their 60-acre field.
"It simply came to our notice then. It was about eight o'clock in the morning, but they were so numerous that the sun had dimmed. The only plants left in Islam Khan's field were those that were near the road or where people used to move.

He told the BBC that the swarm of locusts was about six kilometers long and about two kilometers wide. When he landed on their land, he cleared the crops ten kilometers ahead before flying again.
It was a relatively small army, or an army that was seen last year in Kenya, an African country that was three times larger than New York City in the United States, according to the journal Nature. There are so many swarms of locusts in Africa that flights have been suspended.
The same locust has flown from Africa to Pakistan. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the locust can fly at a speed of 90 miles per hour, meaning it can cover a distance of 160 kilometers per hour.
