Frieren has been training Fern for more than half her life. She was like 6 when they first met. She's gotta be in her later teens, now. I'm sure Fern see's her as a mother figure. Anyways, loved this episode, LOVED the ED. So stoked to start the second half of this and Apothecary Diaries! :D
3:08 In this scene, Sein looked and sounded like a father scolding the kids and Freiren is the mom... hahaha >_< 4:20 This is not the first time Stark's strength just put fear in people. Remember that time with Eisen. He got scared of Stark that he hit him by instinct. Stark is lucky Fern did not just blow him away with her magic >_
Now that you mention it, they never explicitly state if Stark even realises the actual reason why Eisen hit him... Frieren was told the reason but I'm not sure if Stark does
10:50 Himmel kept his feelings buried until they were buried with him. It is SO SAD that they couldn't have explored those feelings when he was still alive, let alone young.
The backstories in this show sometimes get me emotional and they are pretty simplistic like the Sein one when he went to have a smoke. And most of the Himmel ones that she brings up. So much of what she's doing is based on what he did with/for her. Also I would definitely let Frieren hold my hand when I was sick and I don't care that I'm a 37 yr old man. lol.
Author seems to be weirdly projecting his modern Japanese habits unto the classic west-inspired fantasy world that he used. Like their light clothes with no hand & head protection and Japanese-style sitting in rooms without furniture... in northern regions in winter where cold breeze is going close to floor. This 'age of adulthood' doesn't make sense in that world either. I wonder what else he put in there out of habit and without thinking about world-building.
@@PredatoryQQmber That's kind of normal for people to include such things. It's just odd, because it's not out culture, but you have the same with Tolkien - you just don't notice that, because you take some things for granted (albeit some things changed in the meantime, so it raises more eyebrows than it did back then). It's very rare to be able to manage to completely remove the author from the culture they are in. I included this information not to laugh about that but to explain. Could some of it be removed and story could be better? Yes. But honestly it isn't that much. You forget that sitting might be bad in regular house, but if house is built with that in mind, you can actually build one in which you can sit and not freeze. Though admittedly it is a bit of a stretch given how cold it is shown to be.
@@jannegrey593 Even in modern times and in northern countries (Scandinavia, Russia, Canada, etc.) building up to spec to tightly is a major issue and in perfectly built house colder drafts of fresh air will not be good for you either (elders tend to never shut up about them). But that one thing is not important by itself but when there is a lot of them and they are related to cause and effect of events in the story, then it starts to look like inconsistent writing. I'm more worried about major things like demon racism and beliefs of old overtly fascist Japan still being proliferated (such as in Tanya the Evil or whatever it's called, or Code Geass). Japanese ideological underbelly is not a thing I would like to see being projected unto fantasy stories. Although, it's still better than western ideological mainstream. Let's see how much of it is in background and foreground of the story. And if it's only little everyday things or something deeper.
@@PredatoryQQmber If we are expanding outside of Frieren, then yes, there is a lot to worry about. I was talking about Frieren and how some of the style of buildings seems to be from Hokkaido - you know "colder" part. Which is why I said it would only work a little bit to help with drafts. "Demon racism" - given how it is usually rare to write completely irredeemable species in Anime, I say in Frieren it is written quite well and nothing wrong about it (this whole concept is explored later in quite close detail). Please stop seeing racism everywhere. And when it comes to "old fascist beliefs" I sort of agree, but only a handful of authors do it on purpose - those are really bad. Rest are sort of victims of the fact that this is NEVER talked about in school or anywhere else. To the point that when government from time to time, tries to do a small (though waaay inadequate) offering towards what happened in WW2 and Korea/China/Other countries that suffered - people often don't get why. That is the problem and it's said government problem. You expect waaay too much from populace that was not educated for 80 years and have only references from people who occupied them after WW2.
@@jannegrey593 I only mentioned racism once while talking about show about literal race war. So keep orders on what to 'see everywhere' for someone else. And your last point contradicts that one: we are talking about society that for 80 years was under crypto-fascist government made-up from collaborators of occupational army who got to keep their positions for selling their country to foreign power and merely stopping overt indoctrination and propaganda, where anti-communist neo-fascist political assassin (Otoya Yamaguchi) is widely hailed as martyr hero. I don't think I should explain what fascist 1930s governments thought about race. So, this mentality seeping in as 'the norm' is well to be expected. Recently anime Ningen Fushin shat itself on the ending because it suddenly decided to morally whitewash some Unit 731-style villain in the story about recovering trust in humanity after dealing with traitors, yet it left final 'power of friendship' spiel for the worst possible moment. I doubt that author even fully understood what he did there. So, I expect wild jumping-the-shark sh|t like that all the time.
@sukshasakura4997 No that’s a great one too but it mostly uses string instruments. The one I’m talking about seems to be some sort of brass/synth. I’m not super well versed in musical instruments so I may be wrong though. But it’s not the same song.
When Frieren mentioned that the kids were acting strange, I thought that it might be that, after a month, they were making a little progress, but because they’re all a group of socially awkward individuals, the two weren’t sure how to advance things on their own. Wishful thinking, I know, but they still made a little progress. Stark now knows to use a little more finesse when he wants to play with others. Otherwise, Fern might’ve sent him crashing through a wall like Eisen.

I've always found that stance to be shallow, especially when it's about non-romance centered stories. I mean realistically love itself is complicated but it almost never needs anything complicated to blossom. And just because two characters are obviously compatible doesn't disvalue any of the depth that can come from that relationship. Now sure I could understand if you just don't like it when the couples are following cliches as to where they are doing things that aren't even cohesive with their personalities or the setting (Like shoe horning Beach dates, school proms, etc). But not liking them just because they were made in mind to be together by the author comes off to me as middle school girl levels of "I don't like my love to be straight forward, I want constant drama". Not to mention the hypothetical extremes of that side of the argument gets the kind of people who hardcore ship characters who are either characters who can't stand one another and would be a toxic as hell relationship, or have never shown any interest in the same sex, but that's ignored to fulfill headcanon fantasies.
