I went through very similar circumstances. The bottom line was that I found property and a house for cheaper than I could buy a tiny, plus land, septic, and power. I was very disappointed at first but realize that my house will go up in value ut a tiny one would not. I also went through not finding land that would allow a tiny. It is not as easy or cheap as it might seem to be. I am happy with my 550 sq ft cottage. Good luck to you both, I think you are doing the wise thing
I'm glad you were able to find a small cottage that made you happy! And our situation was similar, we got a better deal on our house and land then we ever could have gotten with a tiny.
It is 2024 and I am looking for land to homestead on and of course I am running into the same problem everybody else, surprise surprise. Sure a lot of states support off-grid living but not tiny home building. Plus like you stated, even if you found land that you like, you still need to deal with things like septic, water, power requirements depending on will you live. I was originally looking for land out west but now more focus central/east US and looking for property that already has a home that needs fixing up or property where temporary house/RVing is allowed while I build my more permanent home.
I've been seeing this a lot lately with my favorite nomads I follow! So happy for you guys ❤️ I've always loved your content and I look forward to watching these new videos for your new life as an off grid home owner! 😍
So happy for you- looks like a wonderful place! I love the landscape and views! I’m a land use planner in wa state and tiny homes are always a hot topic but until the zoning and building codes are updated, off grid tiny homes just aren’t viable now. Time will tell. The cool thing about you guys buying an existing home is you are basically repurposing, which is eco friendly its own way 😍 . I can’t wait to see future videos of your projects- salud! 🥂
Congratulations on picking a great home & location!!!!! Thanks for the thorough explanations on the trouble of placing a tiny home in an off the grid area, it's very informative and has helped me a lot. I believe you made a solid investment and loved your ideas of making other small homes on the property i.e. guest houses! Happy New Year 2021!
@@AnnaAndRyan Yeah I hope so too. As you were going through all the restrictions in the video I was really surprised at the staggering amount in super rural areas.
@@mythirlmaiden It's very strange. But I think it's because so many people have taken advantage of the lack of restrictions in rural areas, so now they are going overboard with regulating.
@@AnnaAndRyan It could be that, I know in cities it's to stop the creation of slums. I didn't realize it was such a huge problem in rural areas though. I think too depending on where the land is , it could be just a bit classist, when I looked a land a few plots specified no tiny houses, because they didn't think it would fit in with the neighborhood.
@@mythirlmaiden yeah, I think you're right. There were areas we looked at too where subdivisions said no tiny homes, because they didn't like the look.
Too true. Tried to build our own tiny house in 2019, but every piece of land we looked at had significant restrictions and requirements which were designed to make it impossible. Hopefully we can change that in the future.
Yay!! How amazing. I was so excited for you as I was listening to this video. I just love that you have goals and just go for it. Thanks for inspiring us to live our dreams. I can imagine this as a retreat center, too..but I was just thinking that for my own selfish reasons of wanting to hold a retreat in a beautiful location. LOL. Glad you found something that you love. Looking forward to seeing what the future has in store!
I married a vanlifer too. We also went for a small old house instead of a tiny home. Its too hard to insure them and it illegal most places. Ive heard of quite a few people having to abandon their small shed tiny homes. A real house is best.
Lot's of places accept Tiny's...Brevard county FL, SLO county CA, etc... Also, nationwide financing for Tiny's thru Liberty Bank of Utah! 20% down & 650 FICO
As a Colorado native I feel everyone of your guys pain. I'm looking in Routt it's my kinda of place & gonna go yurt off grid. But the property taxes & everything else is just go up & up. Ugh kinda realy depressing.
You are totally right and this ends up being the scenario for a lot of ppl wanting to live tiny. I think the title that they are a scam isn't really accurate it is just that the council/county wants their rates and it is hard to charge rates on anything that is temporary or on wheels. We have the same issues in Australia. Taking them off their wheels or building on skids is step one of the solution but then complying with council rules and regs can run into many thousands of dollars. Enjoy your new home it looks perfect.:-)
Thank you! And the "scam" element for me is that shows like Tiny House Nation and others make it seem so accessible and obtainable for people on a budget. They market them as this cost-friendly solution to home-ownership, but in reality, they are really unobtainable both financially and legally for the most part to the average person.
@@AnnaAndRyan I understand. I am building my own. Costs a heck of a lot less. We have a lot of vacant land in Australia but the points you raise are very similar here. It is probably cheaper to buy a house there for you guys, Here is Australia you would be looking at minimum $500k for a basic fixer upper...one of the reasons why tiny houses are so popular. I hope your new place is shaping up well for you:-)
Living here in Ireland we dont have much places like that, middle of nowhere views with potential to build as its too expensive, id love it. So ill live vicariously through ye doing yers 😂 goodluck with it and keep up the great videos 👍

the restrictions they place on people are mind boggling.
They really are, I hope that they start changing to allow people to live off-grid sustainably.

Texas seems friendly with this, definitely look at the counties.

The more of a liberal local government the more restrictions and taxes you'll pay for sure. Was my biggest mistake when buying my first home.

housing restrictions are repugnant to the Constitution
All about tax dollars :(
