  • At the hearing by the House Education and Labor subcommittee on health, employment, labor and pensions, Jen Jason, a former organizer for the unaffiliated UNITE HERE union, trashed unions and their members, while claiming to be a proponent of social justice.
What Jason didn't say was that he left his union to work for a company whose workers he was trying to organize. To the tune of $222,000 a year.

As a son of a union man, and a member of a professor's union myself, I get so annoyed at people who complain about union dues, and have no clue what they get in return; the only reason why people think things are good enough to not have unions is becuase of unions...people who want to bust-unions will make you believe that unions are the bad guy, but I rarely trust anyone who is making 50 times what I make to tell me the truth about what is good for the worker.

I find it shocking how many people are ok with subsidizing the rich walmart family, who use government subsidies to top up their low wages which costs the government billions yet hate unions which would keep the gov out of taxpayers pockets and force billion dollar corporations to pay an honest wage.
If you are sick of ridiculous taxation, you should support unions because being a paid a good wage keeps them out of taxpayers income and Im sure the executive class could use a little less cash.

Walmart pays more than McDonalds, Hardees, Target, Best Buy, Sears, etc. Americans want low prices. If costs go up, prices go up, prices go up. It's funny when union members claim they don't shop at Walmart because they are fine with their spouses shopping at Walmart to stretch their union paycheck.

Figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show the typical union worker's pay and benefits are 33% higher than what non-union workers get.
In 2000, union carpenters averaged $20.45 an hour base pay. Nonunion? $13.51. Union drywallers averaged $17.93 an hour in 2000. Nonunion? $12.19.
Wages and salaries for union workers average 16% higher than for nonunion workers.

What? I find it very hard to believe that you are truly in a union. A union insures good pay and benefits that only come with collective bargaining. If your really in a union then the amount you are paid and the benefits outweigh union dues greatly.

A union buster is a disgrace! Shame, shame, shame. Corporations have all the resources, all the power. Unions and other aspects of civil society are the only way to make working a little bit fairer. And by the way, preserve the middle class, which is a stabilizing force. Societies that are polarized very wealthy and very poor are subject to all sorts of problems.

It was said that unionized workers are not in it to get rich. That is only true depending on the definition of “rich”. They are in it for a carefree life without ever working a minute of overtime with at least times and a half pay, plenty of sick days, vacation pay, lifelong healthcare, lifelong pension, no stress, no true responsibility, no real risk, early retirement, accumulation of untaken sick pay, etc. They have every right to pursue this but have no right to force it down others throats

Unionized labor should NEVER be allowed in Government. The relationship becomes too incestuous and corrupt. Union $ supports the politician, who in turn 'bargains' away money they are not accountable for, Future Public Taxes. Private Unions have a duty to their members to help the company to remain profitable, or the company dies, work is lost. Not an issue in Government... Outlaw PUBLIC SECTOR UNIONS!

Child labor is not as productive as adult labor. Children are not employable. The market did not want them. Productivity creates economic opportunity. No, using violence to bash someone over their head would be exerting your authority over a peaceful person’s freedom. That would be anti-freedom.

we tried that at GE. Lynn,MA and the result was complete closing of plant 1(turbine) and consolidation to less troublesome union areas like down south where contracts were ratified by unions cause what was a no good deal in the north was a decent deal for workers in economically depressed area.Bottom line workers in the north forced to swallow a contract they didn't want and left with a bad rep. in corp eyes.

Unfortunately he wasn't able to tell his side of the story. The truth of the matter is that most unions today are as greedy as the coporations, except they don't provide anyone with an actual income (except for the thugs at the top). Speaking as a union member myself, the only difference I see between the corporation and todays unions is this: One pays a salary, the other takes money from that salary. Other than that there really is no difference.

One way of looking at it, unions are a "necessary evil" for us workers.
Without them, we average workers would have had ooor, miserable lives. Unions aren't perfect, but what is a viable alternative?

@furiesego Just because a Law exists today, doesn't mean it won't be changed/removed tomorrow. In wisconsin they already pushed legislation on Child Labor changes regarding allowable hours. Bear in mind, if they can fiddle with what is essentially a safeguard to keep kids in school, what makes you think they won't push an agenda further in the future. A super Majority is a scary thing, because they will act as they will, not for those they claim to represent the will of.

Latest figures on LABOR COSTS:less than 10% gap between US and foreign. Total wage and benefits costs: US=$59 foreign=$56 (average). Due mostly to UAW concessions PRIOR to GM/Chry bankruptcy AND AGAIN in 2009. Contrary to popular opinion the UAW doesn't make any demands and has been trying to help the greedy mismanaged Big 3 stay competitive even though Big 3 gave themselves raises. @Kpa1983 Please get educated on how favorable those 'glory days' of free economy were before any worker 'rights' were enforced. I won't say a union is the best answer, but it was originally the right response to organize those that have a stake in their conditions. The problem of a union, like any other representative body, is corruption nothing is immune to it. But go ahead and look into when the 'middle class' even began to emerge and when the federal government made worker's 'rights'.

I am a member of NABET local 53. The union takes $10 of every day worked and puts that into a Flex plan, which encompasses the whole of my benefits. @wernervoss48 Well in the case of Wisconsin the Union workers had agreed to cuts to balance the budget even after the governor had cut taxes for the richest 1% of Wisconsin. The fact that they did so shoots your post full of holes. His agenda wasn't about the budget anyway, it was to destroy all unions and everybody's right to organize and bargain for better wages. Even if they wanted to union could never compete with corporate America when it comes to buying off politicians.

Unions have been pumeled by the "capitalist right wing Republican" momentum particularly of the Regan era.
They have lost alot of political power starting in the 50's and 60's with the McCarthyist approach to organized labor and the claim that it is a form of socialsm, is infact, even communism.
Democrats tend to back, defend and help Labor Unions obviously while many Repblicans being fiscal conservatives and staunch supporters of the "free market" system do not.

Instead we have the classic "Red vs. Blue" scenario where you have to win, you can't work with the guy on the other side of the line. But Alas, I fear that the concept of "Unions are Bad" are now engrained, painted as an enemy of the people. Imagine how well the government could work if they could compromise on various bills. rather than the "All or nothing" approach

@juscurious @juscurious I was too casual in my response. I know what the caused the famine, but the English never dealt with the issue because it was thought that it would fix itself: Laissez faire. The market place is affected by food shortage due to infestans, but you would argue that there should be no relief, because the market would correct itself, and any relief would perturb that process. Hayek, tho, believed in some government intervention around regulation etc.

also I ask all of you this: what is the right pay level? I believe the right pay level is when an employer needs to raise salaries and benefits to fill open positions. @bhunt31 I'm sorry, I was generalizing to much. @juscurious You have no idea what Unions did for the American worker, from fair treatment to appropiate pay. If markets determined how much someone makes than why do CEOs make so much more than the worker, even in a bad economy? Markets are controlled by those in control, not otherwise, thusly appropriate checks need to be placed. Economics does not take into account people; by your account, you are okay with the Irish potato famine and the death therein, because the market caused the famine.

labour laws pertaining to social justice are EXTREMELY important, however, unions aren't necessarily the way to go about it.

@MartyMac61 Wrong! My union does not steal any money from me. My union uses their members dues for education purposes for classes from civil & human rights, women's issues to training for my job. each member has an opportunity to attend many different classes paid for through my dues. We also make several donations to community fundraisers and support our schools. stop spreading lies about something you obviously know nothing about. Unions support your community.

@597914 Your "pay increases" you so proudly boast. Are not in line with the Consumer Price Index. So when the rest of the country gets docked in pay, Union employees are getting yearly raises. Here employees get 4.5% raises annually. If you do your math (which is apparent you dont) you'll see that government spending for state employees far exceed the CPI and adjusted inflation amounts which end up costing the government BIG TIME. Which in turn... "Kills the middle class" Again, take econ.

I hate to point this out, but your anti-union buddies are the same that fought against the regulation of the derivative market, that funny bubble that caused two major Economic recessions in the last 2 decades? A union is concerned for workers rights and safeties, they did more to influence Labor Law than even the federal government, mainly because the government wouldn't enforce it early on. So before you start looking for a scapegoat for 3 decades of budgetary irresponsibility look at the boss

damn right, thats why i dont complain when i see a union dues deduction in my check.
i could make $7 bucks an hour and have no deduction, or make $25 bucks an hour and pay $55 in dues.........makes sense to me.

@captwasabi I never said all unions are good. There are issues, for sure. I am not an un-nuanced supporter of unions. Thank you, however, for noting the unions have served a purpose in the past. I still believe they do, sorry you have lost faith.

@captwasabi How myopic to blame the UAW for the Big 3's mismanagement. Why is my UAW plant is kicking ass and making money for GM? Mexico makes the same transmission but their quality sucks because they can't keep the 19 yr olds working for $90 a week. You think you know how the auto plants operate but you don't know shit. Demands? WTF? The UAW and their concessions are the reason why GM is making their comback and they couldnt do it without us. Tell me what we demanded? U R A Joke!

Seems like we are not the ones who sold America out! oh, i will not shut the hell up. Educate yourself. Your wrong.

Whered you google that? i suppose you'll tell me next that the US hasnt subsidised foreign owned plants or that their gov'ts don't subsidise them either! Or that artificially dflated currency doesnt happen either? You are seriuosly misinformend! I make $28.73 / hr. So you are saying Honda pays them $7????? WTF!
