- The Librarian, played by Billy Van, had the goal of frightening viewers with tales of horror. Unfortunately for me, this went right over my head as a child. Only now do I appreciate the humor of this sketch.
Isn't it odd how things stay with you subconsciously? When I read Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, I pictured the Hogwart's caretaker, Argus Filch in my mind very similar to the Librarian. The similarity became even stranger to me when I discovered the Librarian had a cat, Horrendous, just as Argus Filch had a cat, Mrs. Norris. I'm so glad I have the opportunity to enjoy this show again. I can't thank the people at Critical Mass Releasing Inc. enough for bringing this show back to air in Canada.
This was another favorite, and Billy Van should get a star on Canada's walk of Fame..he certainly deserves it. The Librarian tries to scare people but fails to do so everytime.
Still cool as hell.
The librarian and Grizelda were both my favourites!
Me too
I loved them and the Wolfman.
The Librarian was my favorite of all. Billy Van was so talented. RIP BIll Van, you made a difference in my childhood. Thank you kabukiwolf for the wonderful memories.
This man was simply amazing. It definitlly stays in your subconscious. Long live billy
Hickory Dockery dock.....muhahhaha
Agreed!!! He’s Brilliant and I find myself imitating him all the time with my child and not even realizing… That I’m doing “the library and”! Lol
Loved this show when I was kid in Hamilton , Ontario Canada. Billy Van played most of the characters and was the king of camp.
LOVED ALL of this program BUT the LIBRARIAN was my favourite ...what a genius BILLY VAN WAS. HILARIOUS ANTICS back then, I MISS IT !!!
I named my cat Horrendous after tha librarians cat i luv you billy van!!
In the immortal words of The Wolfman..., ''DIG IT!''
The memories of childhood and running home from school, to turn this series on just came flooding back!! I have been trying to remember details of this program for many years - all I could remember up till just now were "sensations" but nothing clearly defined. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!
He always terrified me as a kid.
This shit is fucking CLASSIC! I wish I was a kid again!
Oh,yes, the Librarian was my favorite sketch from the show. And it was a spoof on those who say nursery rhymes and children's stories are horrifying to little children. That came from psychologists who were afraid of their own shadows. Billy Van showed them, LOL!
The could have called it the Billy Van show. The makeup and costumes were great.
Hahah! The librarian was the shit! Used to creep me out as a kid, but now I can't stop laughing!
If Billy Van had not died early in his life, I am sure he would have achieved some greater popularity.
R.I.P.
OMG I remember watching this! I loved it!

Great great TV! thank you for posting
This was such a good show. And brings back so much memories. It's been over 25 years since I watched this show. Another classic much like G.I. Joe and Transformers.
They should do a show like this again. But then again, nobody will be like Billy Van. He was the best. Portraying 10 characters to perfection. Just awesome stuff. He should've been on SNL or something.
I guess perhaps who could follow in his footsteps are people like Mike Myers, Will Farrel, Ben Stiller, etc.
thanks for posting these!
awesome...
I don't think even THE LIBRARIAN was terrified. Still, he managed to turn fables and rhymes into stomach-churning commentary.
I always loved this show, so many great characters
I saved this to several playlists but most exciting of all is I saved this to my Sleep Magic playlist. Cannot wait to fall asleep to this!
Brilliant and Brilliance
Quack Quack, says the DUCK! :) Love how his eyes widen when he says that part LOL
I loved the Librarian and the show...thanks for posting.
That's creepy music!!! lol LOVE IT!!!
Lol! Many bowls of cereal early in the morning in Ontario. This show came on very early.
They also played the first couple of minutes of that tune for a Monty Python "Sci-Fi" sketch.
"Industrie Spatiale" by Robert Hermel
I love the music for this show :)
Did you know it was used for the intro to the "Sci-Fi" sketch in Monty Python? 😆
This was my fav! I loved when he yelled at Zanzibar the Castle ghost who always knocked books off the shelves and made a funny laugh, great stuff, glad it's on Space, Drive-In, and TV-Land, too bad there is no Wolfman psychedelic music scenes though :(
The Wolfman stuff was shortened due to licensing issues with the music. The psychedelic silhouette backgrounds were a video feed-back effect created by pointing a studio camera at a monitor showing the output of that camera.
That background ambient music always creeped me out as a kid, great show!

love it,,billy van the man
Billy Van was the bomb.
"Quack... Quack... says the DUCK!" 😮😮😮
Terrifying.
When this was on I was too old to admit I watched it and too young not to miss it.
Horrendous was a cat that wandered into the studio one day and just stuck around on its own schedule. One of the directors named the cat Horrendous because he felt the cat was ruining scenes by wandering through a scene while they were recording. No, Doctor Pet-Vet never brought Horrendous for Igor.
wow I almost forgot about this! haha!
Oh wow, so this is where the librarian from Heroine's Quest is from!
Love the Librarian and Horenndous
Grizelda cracked me up..also I loved Igor groovin on the Wolfman sketch
Some like it hot,
Some like it in the pot,
....NINE DAYS OLD.
One of my favourite characters in the show. Besides having a massive crush on Vincent Price… this Librarian gave me goosebumps in a good way! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 ❤🤤
I love The Librarians logo. The music is cool too.
I have not seen this in 35 years!!! Local UHF station aired this every Saturday Afternoon! I couldnt remember the name, I thought it was "Dr. Castle Fright" or something! WOW! Thanks for bringing back a distant memory! Now that im older I can understand it better. :-)
Landaux I remember this too being in northern Ohio
He looked like that 10 years ago!
Yes... the Hilarious House of Frankenstien... starring, Billy Van, Billy Van... and Billy Van.
I heard he past away about six months ago on the radio.
Miss Billy Van. Miss the show. Miss him on game show.
I've never saw it but it looked it great 👍😃
I was terrified of the closet to his right......you couldn't have paid me a trillion dollars to enter that room
Thanks for posting these!!!
Canadian talent t it's best!
No Mister Librarian, I am a little frightened! O_O
Creepy... and awesome as well! XD
Haha, I didn't get it as a kid either, but I loved the show anyway. :)
I was lucky enough to grab the 3 dvd box set released awhile back...classic
Is it possible on VHS? I ponder.
The series is on Crave now
@@michaelgordon3552 Thank you Michael. I'll check it out. I still laugh my head off over Billy Van's Grizelda to this very day.
my mother used to quote that cat in the well poem to me
Yeah, to be honest, when I was a young one, I never got the Librarian either, but now he's awesome :)
He was trying to teach us the dangers of P**sy, But we wouldn't listen.
Frightenstein wouldn't get off the drafting table today.
Two very alive kitty cats of the same litter is what I need.
I shall name them Lucas and Spielberg, and
They will drive the rats and overall vermin of this building to oblivion.
They bathe often and love to read and hang out in my library.
now that I think of it porridge in a pot for 9 days is pretty scary!
I love it!
1:54 - The Owl. Excellent.
Bow Wow!
Frightening... LOL
Horrendous the cat is in this one
Billy Van
What cookoo say you know...cookoo cookoo
lol.. this guy creeped me out when i was a kid.
whacky and hilarious !!!
Quack, quack says the ... Duck
I wonder if he's a descendant of the Master Librarian from Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night?
do you know what really terrifying? Grizelda cooking ^,..,^
can you post the one about PLUM PUDDING? :) or do I have the wrong show?
Great stuff but my favorite is STILL Grizelda.
owl abuse lol
Sunday morning at 6
This show was pure Gold.
This reminds me of that MST3K where they're reading the childrens books which are filled with unimaginable horrors...except for "Dr. Terror's Orgy of Blood", which is a nice little tale of a picnic. XD
But what does the fox say?
Dracula frightensyein
is that a quote from SCTV Joe Flatery?
Is that the singer from Pentagram?
I wonder if this is a comment on the ineffectiveness of literature to impact the youth of the 20th century.
One of my favorite characters
