Trying to conver the datamoshed file back to mp4 using vlc makes the first couple of seconds of the clip, up to where I deleted the , unable to be read by my editing software. Converting it using the website you used worked, though. I'm just wondering what reason that could be.
I tried to get Avidmux 2.5.4 through your link but it keeps bringing me to a newer version without the features that allow for datamoshing properly. Do you know where I can find a link to an older version?
hey, I just checked the link in the description, and it still works for me, the site offers the latest version I the green button, but 2.5.4 still remains underneath as an available option for windows. I would recommend checking the link in the description again, and selecting the blue highlighted avidmux 2.5.4 text. I hope this helps, but let me know if you need further assistance!
I think I downloaded some new version of avidemux. I can't find the settings for i frame, there is only configuration for b frame. Is datamoshing possible in this version too, or do I need to download the older version?
Unfortunately you can’t Datamosh on newer versions of Avidmux, it needs to be 2.5.4. I have a link in the description that should take you to a download page for Avidmux 2.5.4!
I use various different video editors to combine my original clips, sometimes it’s Final Cut, sometimes it’s Premiere Pro, and sometimes on occasions it’s after effects! It doesn’t matter which editor I use to combine the clips, as long as they are in a h.264 file format!
I haven't used VLC to convert my videos in a while, but I believe you need to of to File > convert/stream > and then elect the codec you want to convert to. if this doesn't work either I would recommend looking for another online converter, or for the ultimate glitchy datamoshing experience, screen recording the playback from VLC. sometimes I've found using Screen recordings to actually be useful in crafting the glitch astheitc! @@ramblinnelson Sorry! It doesn’t work on Mac, I am working on a video soon for alternate methods you can do on Mac. Unfortunately unless you have an Intel Mac, you can’t datamosh, and even then you need to have a windows emulator. @@ShaunRayEdits rats, I've got an M1 chip. it's strange that it's not possible on mac but there are mobile apps that seem to do the trick? regardless, thanks for this excellent video!
I followed the steps exactly but it doesnt work /: i have the right version but after i delete the s and save the video back out as a copy its not readable by anything and is usually just black with the audio glitching out. idk what my problem is.
I would recommend trying with the test footage I have linked in the description of the video. Your problem could be the footage you have decided to use, or alternatively you may have selected the wrong format on the 1st save, since it needs to be a mpeg 4 ASP (Xvid), and there are multiple formats with similar names Otherwise you may have downloaded a different version of avidmux, as I’ve had someone else encounter this problem. If it works with the test footage then it’s most likely your footage, but if the output is still black, and not the same as the result in my video, drop a reply to the comment, I’m more than happy to help you troubleshoot your problem!
so make sure its an mp4 or mov before doing the rest of the steps, one thing i was still having problems with was that there was a cut in my footage that didnt get an Iframe and i needed it there.
@@zerek44 if the footage cuts to black it will not work, the footage needs to go straight from one scene to another. As for the file format, you have to bare in mind that avidmux is a very old piece of sowftware so it doesn’t always support the super fancy new codecs. I also find it very interesting your working through your footage with after effects! This is awesome, I hope you manage to make some really cool combinations of effects mate, Happy moshing!
Have you combine the two clips before bringing them into avidmux? If you did combine the clips before bringing them into avidmux, this problem only occurs when your original editors exporting process believed there was no I-Frame necessary to split the 2 clips. You either need to pick clips that have distinct differences between the first clips last frame, and the second clips first frame Alternatively, you can add 1 single very different frame between the 2 clips, which should force the original export into creating an I frame for that single frame, as well as for the clip after that frame, allowing you to remove the I-Frames, and get the datamosh effect on the 2 original clips! I hope this helps! Feel free to ask any extra questions and let me know how it goes! Thanks!
It seems to me that sometimes when I push the up and down arrow buttons they don't always go to the between the clips, but to some other after it, so I just have to manually use the left/right arrow keys to find the between the clips.@@ShaunRayEdits
Hello thank you very much for the video but i do have a problem i am unable to delete the i frame from the video all steps leading up to it are fine i just cant delete the i frame
That’s very strange? I’d double check you have avidmux 2.5.4, and that the I frame interval is all 9s and set to mpeg 4 (Xvid) I’d also make sure the video isn’t to long/ to many separate clips at once. Those are the top suspects for not being able to delete i frames But if these aren’t the problem, see if you can delete other frames, and the I frames exclusively are the problem? I have another datamoshing tutorial on p frame duplication available on my channel : ruclips.net/video/xVecXLUPsWo/видео.html This may also give you the effect your looking for as an alternative to I frame datamoshing I hope all this helps, but if not just drop me another comment and explain the problem a little more and I’ll see if I can help out! P.s. if you haven’t subscribed already I’d super appreciate it:)!
When I import my video into Avidemux, I get a green screen where my project would be? Why could this be. I am using H.264 and tried using MP4 or Quicktime. Do you have any help?
I think when I’ve experienced this issue in the past it’s been around the density of the file, maybe try cutting your footage down into smaller chunks to test it, or a lower resolution. I’d also recommend making sure you have the correct version of avidmux etc
You won’t be able to run it on a MacOS directly, if you still have a intel Mac, you could use boot camp to run windows, and the use avidmux on you Mac. Link for windows on Mac: support.apple.com/en-us/HT201468 If you have a newer Apple Silicon Mac, or don’t want to run windows on your Mac, then I’d recommend seeing if a friend or family member has a old computer you can borrow, it doesn’t need to be to powerful, so don’t worry about that. As for which one to download, if I remember correctly I used the intel.dmg, or the win32.exe dependent on my which computer I was working on, as I’ve done this on multiple pcs now. So it’s a bit of trail and error on which will work unless you know the specs of your computers operating system. Hope all this helps, let me know if you have any problems:)

Can you convert the AVI to h.264? You should be able to do this on the online converter I have linked in the description, or just exporting it through a traditional editor (prem, Final Cut, davinci, media encoder)
using the online converter i converted it to a mp4 with the 1920, 1080 Full HD 25p, h.264. This is the same present i sued on DaVinci resolve. This time when i click No it does not crash but still displays a green screen.@@ShaunRayEdits

My comments are not sending so if a bunch pop up, sorry. I tried that just now, i used an mp4 with h.264 still showed green. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing@@ShaunRayEdits
I would try troubleshooting this problem in this order: 1) make sure it’s avidmux 2.5.4 2) make sure the footage your importing it’s one single clip of h.264 3) try it with a small sequence of clips first (10-15 seconds) 4) double check you are hitting no to both pop ups (as seen in the video) before beginning My only other thought on this problem is when you open a file in avidmux, especially if it is already converted to mpeg4 and try to hit spacebar to preview the video it will crash, as it can’t compute what your asking since the I frames are removed. I hope this helps! Let me know if it works, and if it doesn’t still let me know and I’ll see if I can help you figure out the issue:)
@@ShaunRayEdits I have the Avidemux on 2.5.4, number two it's one single clip, and the footage I imported is only like 3 - 5 seconds, i only get one pop up and i hit no then it crashes once i hit no on the popup
@@VexolFX it sounds like if your only getting one pop up, the footage isn’t in a h.264 file, since you should have a pop up for h.264 detected. I’d recommend putting the clip you want to try through the online converter linked in the description and turning it into a h.264, or re exporting through your original editing software into a h.264, and then you should be good to go! Hopefully this solves the issue your having, but let me know either way:)
You can edit your original clips together in any editor, but the datamoshing process has to go through avidmux, which is usually only on PC, or select old Macs with Old MacOS/windows emulators!
The software is indeed outdated. However it does offer functions unavailable in any current day editing software, which allows you to create an authentic, and real ‘datamosh’ I am aware of alternative plugins for modern editing software, but they do not provide real I-frame removal or P frame duplication, rather just a effect similar to the authentic. So although the software required is outdated, the tutorial remains relevant, at least until I frame and p frames become accessible and editable in current modern video editors.
@@rose11e Could you elaborate why the tutorial is outdated? It still teaches how to create the datamoshing effect. and the software required is still available. i have NO idea why but my delete key didn't work. i've bailed out on datamoshing so many times because i never actually deleted the i frame 😭🙏instead, i just used Edit>Cut. appreciate the tutorial
Trying to conver the datamoshed file back to mp4 using vlc makes the first couple of seconds of the clip, up to where I deleted the , unable to be read by my editing software. Converting it using the website you used worked, though. I'm just wondering what reason that could be.
That is strange! I'm glad the online converted worked for you though, and Thank You for watching!
I checked the version, it's 2.8.1
Unfortunately you can’t Datamosh on newer versions of Avidmux, it needs to be 2.5.4. I have a link in the description that should take you to a download page for Avidmux 2.5.4!
nevermind, I downloaded the 2.5.4
what editor do you use?
I use various different video editors to combine my original clips, sometimes it’s Final Cut, sometimes it’s Premiere Pro, and sometimes on occasions it’s after effects!
It doesn’t matter which editor I use to combine the clips, as long as they are in a h.264 file format!
both the video converters in the desc didnt work
hey, i got my video to play in vlc but the online converter is not working... is there any way to save it through vlc? much love!
I haven't used VLC to convert my videos in a while, but I believe you need to of to
File > convert/stream > and then elect the codec you want to convert to.
if this doesn't work either I would recommend looking for another online converter, or for the ultimate glitchy datamoshing experience, screen recording the playback from VLC. sometimes I've found using Screen recordings to actually be useful in crafting the glitch astheitc!
Thank you so much for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
thanks for the advice! I ended up just screen recording it. came out pretty much the same @@ShaunRayEdits
hi shaun ... it's a great tutorial. I tried to apply the steps but I couldn't find the maximum I-frame interval setting in the software. I even installed an older version but still did not find this setting. any advice?
Thank you!
I’ve never encountered and issue like this before, and I’m guessing you have tried using the version I have linked in the description? I would triple check that you are in the correct tab to find the I frame interval editor, as that was a mistake I’ve seen people make before.
If you have any extra information I’d love to help but I’m a bit stumped on this problem at the moment sorry!
I'm having the same problem. I'm fairly certain this doesn't work on Mac
@@ramblinnelson Sorry! It doesn’t work on Mac, I am working on a video soon for alternate methods you can do on Mac.
Unfortunately unless you have an Intel Mac, you can’t datamosh, and even then you need to have a windows emulator. Apple have plenty of well documented way to emulate windows so that’s a good place to start if you want to explore that option!
Your problem could be the footage you have decided to use, or alternatively you may have selected the wrong format on the 1st save, since it needs to be a mpeg 4 ASP (Xvid), and there are multiple formats with similar names
Otherwise you may have downloaded a different version of avidmux, as I’ve had someone else encounter this problem.
If it works with the test footage then it’s most likely your footage, but if the output is still black, and not the same as the result in my video, drop a reply to the comment, I’m more than happy to help you troubleshoot your problem!
@@ShaunRayEdits fixed. oddly enough my problem was starting with footage that was already in AVI format when i brought it into the program from AE.
so make sure its an mp4 or mov before doing the rest of the steps, one thing i was still having problems with was that there was a cut in my footage that didnt get an Iframe and i needed it there.
This is awesome, I hope you manage to make some really cool combinations of effects mate,
Happy moshing!
it doesn't let me open avidemux
for some reason an i-frame isn't created between my two clips, does this happen much?
Have you combine the two clips before bringing them into avidmux?
If you did combine the clips before bringing them into avidmux, this problem only occurs when your original editors exporting process believed there was no I-Frame necessary to split the 2 clips.
You either need to pick clips that have distinct differences between the first clips last frame, and the second clips first frame
Alternatively, you can add 1 single very different frame between the 2 clips, which should force the original export into creating an I frame for that single frame, as well as for the clip after that frame, allowing you to remove the I-Frames, and get the datamosh effect on the 2 original clips!
@@bobflux4435 Ahh, in that case it might be that you have either missed converting it to a mpeg-4, or missed changing the I-Frame interval to all 9s!
Hello thank you very much for the video but i do have a problem i am unable to delete the i frame from the video all steps leading up to it are fine i just cant delete the i frame
That’s very strange?
I’d double check you have avidmux 2.5.4, and that the I frame interval is all 9s and set to mpeg 4 (Xvid)
I’d also make sure the video isn’t to long/ to many separate clips at once.
Those are the top suspects for not being able to delete i frames
But if these aren’t the problem, see if you can delete other frames, and the I frames exclusively are the problem?
I have another datamoshing tutorial on p frame duplication available on my channel :
ruclips.net/video/xVecXLUPsWo/видео.html
This may also give you the effect your looking for as an alternative to I frame datamoshing
I hope all this helps, but if not just drop me another comment and explain the problem a little more and I’ll see if I can help out!
P.s. if you haven’t subscribed already I’d super appreciate it:)!
@@ShaunRayEdits thank you very much i realised i was on avidemux 2.5.6 i really apreciate your time i hope you have a good day
When I import my video into Avidemux, I get a green screen where my project would be? Why could this be. I am using H.264 and tried using MP4 or Quicktime. Do you have any help?
I think when I’ve experienced this issue in the past it’s been around the density of the file, maybe try cutting your footage down into smaller chunks to test it, or a lower resolution.
I’d also recommend making sure you have the correct version of avidmux etc
@@ShaunRayEdits Same here, can't figure it out either... That's a shame, I used to do it years ago, maybe windows 11 doesn't help
😢
hi mate. I have a Mac, will Avidmux work/ which one of the download links do I choose? there's five options
You won’t be able to run it on a MacOS directly, if you still have a intel Mac, you could use boot camp to run windows, and the use avidmux on you Mac.
Link for windows on Mac:
support.apple.com/en-us/HT201468
If you have a newer Apple Silicon Mac, or don’t want to run windows on your Mac, then I’d recommend seeing if a friend or family member has a old computer you can borrow, it doesn’t need to be to powerful, so don’t worry about that.
You should really clarify this is for moshing 2 videos together in your title. I watched the other video and do it to 2 videos which result very bad.
could you make an updated version for avidermuz 2.8 its not working in the update ://
There is unfortunately no way to datamosh in avidmux 2.8.
I would recommend following the link in my description to download avidmux 2.5.4. This will allow you to datamosh!
@@skarn4117 If your having trouble getting I frames to show up, it may be that the first frame from your second clip isn’t different enough from your previous clip to define itself as an I-Frame, in this case maybe try 2 different clips, but if your set on those clips, add 1 frame that’s completely different between those 2 clips in your original editor to trick avidmux!
I hope this helps, but if not let me know, and I’ll see what I can do!
It says error when I try to convert the file to a mov how do I fix this ?
Hey,
Firstly does your final file play in VLC.
Have you also changed the the video back to a copy before exporting it for the final time.
Also are you using the online converter I recommended in the description, I have usually had no errors with this converter in the past.
If any of this helps let me know, if it doesn’t solve your problem, drop me another comment and I’ll see if I can figure out how to fix your problem again:)
If any of this does help and you did enjoy my tutorial, I’d really appreciate it if you could subscribe and support the channel, thank you!
@@ShaunRayEdits 1, my video does play in VLC but it is 25 minutes long instead of the 1:11 minute clip i rendered with avidemux and the audio is completely gone
2. I did set it back to cop before exporting.
3. I am using the online converter in the description.
thank you for replying :)
I dont have xvid i only have xvid4 and nothing is the same
You most likely have a newer version of avidmux if you have anything above 2.5 it will not work.
I have left a link to avidmux 2.5 in the description, so try downloading that and you should be able to mosh away freely!

Avidemux only shows a green screen, i am on 2.5.4.
if i click no it crashes, if i click yes it shows a green screen. If i use an AVI file it only shows green. please help.

@@shout-messagetry using 2.5.6
my Avidemux just crashes when i import my footage
I would try troubleshooting this problem in this order:
1) make sure it’s avidmux 2.5.4
2) make sure the footage your importing it’s one single clip of h.264
3) try it with a small sequence of clips first (10-15 seconds)
4) double check you are hitting no to both pop ups (as seen in the video) before beginning
My only other thought on this problem is when you open a file in avidmux, especially if it is already converted to mpeg4 and try to hit spacebar to preview the video it will crash, as it can’t compute what your asking since the I frames are removed.
Can you do this on mobile for capcut?
You can edit your original clips together in any editor, but the datamoshing process has to go through avidmux, which is usually only on PC, or select old Macs with Old MacOS/windows emulators!

outdated
The software is indeed outdated.
However it does offer functions unavailable in any current day editing software, which allows you to create an authentic, and real ‘datamosh’
I am aware of alternative plugins for modern editing software, but they do not provide real I-frame removal or P frame duplication, rather just a effect similar to the authentic.
So although the software required is outdated, the tutorial remains relevant, at least until I frame and p frames become accessible and editable in current modern video editors.
@@ShaunRayEdits i meant the tutorial, not the software
@@rose11e Could you elaborate why the tutorial is outdated?
It still teaches how to create the datamoshing effect. and the software required is still available.
If the tutorial is indeed outdated for any reason I will update and refresh my datamoshing tutorials, as datamoshing is something I'm incredibly passionate about.
@@ShaunRayEdits i mean the software has changed and it wont work like the way you said on the tutorial, sorry if i messed anything up

great video, poor tutorial
Thank you for appreciating the video, I’m sorry to hear that you’ve struggled with the tutorial. I’d love to know where and what I can improve to make the tutorial easier for you to understand, since I do plan on making more in the near future. I would like to clear up a few things:
The tutorial was made as part of my university degree, so was constrained to being under 4 minutes and have a similar structure to what the video ended up being.
The video was also made in quite a short amount of time, leading to some of the video feeling a little rushed, I am working on improving this right now for future videos, I’ve just been super busy but it won’t be long before I’m making more tutorials again.
sorry it turned out it was just me and i was using the wrong version. You nailed it ❤️
