      It has been dead for quite some time - and for whatever reason they cannot seem to stop kicking the Tiberium Sun stuff around like a dead horse. The last time they tried to renew CnC it flopped so hard the game never made it out of beta (Generals 2 iirc).

      This is classic EA, It's like when they released the last Sim City and we had to go to Cities Skylines to get the game we wanted, this time we have Tempest Rising to get the Command and Conquer experience we've been craving for years.
      I loved EA growing up but at this point I don't believe they're redeemable, the C&C IP is just an asset to squeeze dry for them.

      There's an open play test for the first mission of Tempest Rising on it's steam page, I heard it's only available until the 28th so I would get on that asap if you want to try it, it's hidden behind a request access button but it was instant for me, it's unashamedly a C&C clone and all the better for it IMO.

    It's been that way ever since RA2. Even if you want to stick to just the "main" franchise, things were a lot more colorful post Tiberian Sun, and Billy Dee Williams was eating whole chunks out of the scenery in Tiberium Wars.

  • @arsmariastarlight3567
    @arsmariastarlight3567 Год назад +3

    As a long-time fan of CnC, the last good CnC is TIberium Wars. RA3 is okay-ish (albeit a bit cartoony) but after that, it's all cashgrab and trend-chasing:
    -Tiberian Twilight (chasing Esport fad against Starcraft)
    -CnC remaster (chasing remastered fad, which although it's pretty good, it's still just rose-tinted nostalgia glasses of something we already played before)
    -CnC rivals (mobile game fad with lootbox)
    and now we have this
    If you see how the CnC games progressed, it's clear that the peak of it is during Tiberium wars, it has the most serious graphics of all CnC series, it has units with special abilities, unit upgrades, support powers and great storyline. Past that, the game seems to regressed, becoming even simpler for each installments to appeal to lowest common denominator:
    ->In RA3, EA removed:
    -ore fields, no longer you can do harvester raid since they won't ever need move out of predesignated ore nodes
    -All weapons now certainly hit (regardless if it isn't even possible)
    -Removed unit upgrades (although previous RA series don't feature upgrades, it's clear that it offers richer gameplay since Generals and CnC3 also features it)
    -Units' special abilities matters even more (basically turning the game's multiplayer into micro-intensive clickfest)
    ->In Tiberian Twilight, EA removed... everything fundamental about CnC
    -base building (no option to cripple certain production building)
    -ore fields (no option for harvester raid or map control, or even worry about money)
    -power (no option to go after their power plant)
    -Dumbed down the combined arms tactics (with the crawler-based system, your own strategy is extremely single-minded: if you play defense, you play turtling and restricted to infantry, if you play offense, you basically do deathball tank rush, and if you play support, you basically play as airfield)
    -With the damage and armor types, the gameplay become super bonkers: in previous games, even a lowly infantryman can kill tanks using mg, but here, your unit could be basically invulnerable against anything without correct weapon type to counter your armor type, but utterly MELT against anything with correct counter (not that I dislike specific weapons countering specific unit, but the difference is so extreme in Twilight that a single high end infantry could take upwards to FIVE minutes killing a basic tank. To illustrate how ridiculous this is, here's an (ridiculous) example: remember the beloved commandos? Yeah, it now takes MINUTES for him to kill a single basic infantry because all infantry armor is "light" which is weak against "gun" type weapons, the commando carries "missile" and "cannon" type weapons, which is ONLY effective against "medium" armor. So yeah, you can have a case of T3 commando taking minutes to kill T1 infantry, who guns him down in seconds because of this nonsense) If you want easy win, build T1 laser units and swarm enemy crawler before going to their spawn point to kill them on respawn. Because of the damage and armor types, they are surprisingly resistant against nearly anything while crawler and the majority of higher tier units are vulnerable against lasers. Plus, these t1 little buggers are insanely fast and replaced faster than they rate they're killed
    -Unit cap, plus the higher tier units are now locked until you level up your commander (and good luck with that, since the xp is also capped at 4000 no matter how well you play and lategame level can cost upwards to 150000. And no, playing the campaign does not unlock new units as you progress, especially with a pitiful 800 xp PER MISSION. So yes, you WILL play the final mission with basic units). To rub salt on the wound, the unlock is separate, PER FACTION (so for example, if you level up as GDI offense to lv50 and unlock all of it's units, and decided to play as Nod, then guess what, you start at lv1 and have to grind it all over again)
    -Some features feels needless or simply put just to nonsensically make the game even more micro heavy, like for example manual reload (yes, there's a manual reload, and it's only for gun-based units. There's no such thing for laser, missile or cannon-based units). Or the chance for miss (yes, your units can miss on their shot, but the thing is, it's not based on distance, it's purely based on percentage. So you can have a tank firing at other tank, at point blank range and STILL MISS. You have to research an upgrade to completely eliminate it)
    -In addition to shoehorn the main storyline that they said 'canon' (I don't), which, because of the Esport-centric gameplay means the story becomes complete nonsense and utterly boring (let's take a comparison shall we? In Tiberium wars, you have MCV escort mission, rally the survivors after scrin invasion and plan a counterattack, steatlh mission to cripple GDI antimissile defense, siege the Temple prime of Sarajevo, operation to eliminate rebellious nod higher-ups, etc. etc. etc. all with the combined arms units, upgrades and support powers. In Twilight, since the ONLY gameplay is primarily revolves around capture points, the WHOLE campaign missions is just that, leading the entire storyline basically concerning about capture points and feels like the rest of the world leaders trying to decide the fate of the entire planet on Esport, literally just feels that Kane Lives to win Esport lol while giving middle finger to all those story build up, lore and other questions from previous games)
    ->Rivals is basically just [insert any money draining scheme mobile game here] and apply CnC skin on it. Legion is basically just version 2.0 of this, and I might say strayed even further (seriously, the character models and the art direction feels like it came from fucking Overwatch)
    Sorry for the long rant, but as someone who grew up with with CnC series since the 90s, I still can't forgive what EA has done with the franchise, literally not just butchering it, but pissed on it's grave, twice. I still play older CnC games to this day, the one when it's still have souls and love put on it (mainly Tiberium Wars, RA2 and Generals), just to re-experience that old nostalgia

    • @MrAtlantos
      @MrAtlantos Год назад +2

      I believe RA3 can still be considered one of the great CnC games. I don't agree with your criticisms of it.
      1. It is true they removed ore fields as they were in previous games, but that didn't remove harvester raiding. Harvesters can still be destroyed to cripple a foe's economy and you can see such plays quite frequently in the competitive scene.
      2. "All weapons now certainly hit." Not true. Weapons such as infantry rifles and tank cannons do always hit, but that isn't new to the series. RA3 bombers are essentially useless against smaller, nimbler units like fast vehicles and infantry because they can dodge the bombs with ease. I think the only unit that changed in RA3 were rocket launchers, which do not miss compared to their Tiberium Wars counterparts.
      3. Unit upgrades are still a thing in RA3. They just switched them from being research options in tech buildings to being commander abilities. The scope is definitely more limited than in Tiberium Wars but it's still there.
      4. Unit abilities are indeed very important, which I'm not a fan of. That being said, I do believe that RA3 was better served distinguishing itself with its more gimmicky gameplay than trying to just be Tiberium Wars with a Cold War coat of paint. At its core, it still is CnC, albeit one that appeals to a slightly different audience.
      5. CnC has always been a bit silly. Tiberium Wars was dark and gritty yet still had plenty of dark humor. Red Alert 3 frequently leans into its campiness, and I believe its cartoony artstyle suits that pretty well. Generals was also quite campy, so RA3 wasn't breaking new ground for the series on that front. It still is CnC.
      I just felt like responding to this cause your observations left me scratching my head a bit. As for Tiberium Twilight, I agree that it was a misguided travesty, and its abominable mobile successors have been little more than EA parading the corpse of the series around. We can only hope that at some point someone picks up the torch that these excellent RTS games left behind.

      @@MrAtlantos
      Fair enough, everyone have their own opinion on their perferred CnC series. Probably because I grew up mostly with Tiberium and Generals series. So, to address some of your statements:
      1. What I mean is that the resource nodes are much easier to defend against raids, just throw all-around walls and put turrets around it. Previously on RA2 and TW, the resource fields covers several portions of the map, so the resource collectors have to wander off outside the base to do collection (in other words, their operational range now larger, so the vulnerability of raiding gives another perspective on how you raid or counter enemy raid, especially when they harvest the same field)
      2. I agree yes, bombs and slow moving projectiles can still miss. What I mean by that (the one that shouldn't be possible) is some weird case like missiles following Sky wing as it goes underwater, or the fact that many of the support powers can't really be countered and in practice they are eventually granted no matter what without an in-game reason or decision
      3. The RA3 unit upgrade is kinda hit and miss in my opinion. Previously on Generals and TW, unit upgrades costs money, are researched from certain tech buildings, and there's some that can only be unlocked using generals power or from certain factions, so there's a layer on decision-making there. I just feel that in RA3, the fact that you got substantial unit upgrade, for several types, instantly for free just by using promotion feels pretty jarring
      4. I don't know how to say this, but some unit abilities feels pretty forced, especially on Empire of the Rising Sun, with their transforming shenanigans, since that means depending on what mode the vehicle currently is, it could mean you lack certain vehicles or utterly steamroll the opposition. I don't know, but compared to previous special abilities on Generals and TW (which enhances the role the unit already is), the special abilities in RA3 feels much more of a deciding factor in a fight
      5. Compared to it's predecessor, RA2, RA3 does feel much more cartoony. While yes, RA2 looks like B-movie in terms of goofiness, aesthetically speaking, there's still an amount of grittiness on it that's still saying "we're dead serious". Compare RA2 desolator (rad-suit infantry with radiation cannon) with RA3 desolator (robotic suit with fuel hose), and I think you get what I mean
      Not that saying RA3 is bad or don't have it's own merit, people can have their own preference, but hey that's just my opinion on it on why it didn't click with me

    First of all, if you are a Company, an independent company at that, you want to make more money than you do right now. So from a simple business perspective any Developer Team, any independent Developer absolutely should use Microstransaction and lootboxes, etc for their own gain.
    Secondly. Most people don't care anymore. No matter how much you say no matter how much you advice the people to stop falling for the market tricks, they'll never listen. And frankly I wouldn't listen any more either, because sometimes I really just want one of the items in the Micro Store.
