the thing is it wasn't even originally supposed to be a fine art piece worth all that much. some guy taped a banana to the wall in a gallery as a prank and commentary on how overvalued all of the other pieces there were, and the gallery patrons didn't realize it and treated it like a sculpture or performance piece. the banana gets replaced every few days anyways to keep up the bit.
That was pretty much what happened. Plus it has provoked more discussion than any piece of "high art" than i can think of. The fact that people get so offended by the idea that something like this could be considered art is also part of pieces like this.
