I've just completed the book like a few hours ago. You know the strange feeling that you get when you've just completed a great book and you feel so good and elevated and the world keeps going on about its business like nothing's changed. Great review..loved it..loved the book. Especially the way things turn out in the final 3rd of the book. Never saw any of it coming. The end was also so apt, the more one dwells on it the more sense it makes. Do recommend a book that is similar to this one if you've come across any. Also, if you haven't read 'A man called Ove' already.. please do read it. It's a simple and a book that is so wholesome and fulfilling. I'd like to see your review of that as well. You won't regret it.
Hi Aman, I actually have read 'A Man Called Ove' and I loved it! I read it before I started booktube so I don't have a review of it. However, I did, just a week ago, finish "The Remains of the Day" by Kazuo Ishuguro which really reminded me of "A Gentleman in Moscow" and I will be reviewing that book soon! Thanks for your comment!
I just finished this book yesterday and your review is absolutely perfect. In a world in which civility seems in short supply, the Count reminds us all of what it means to live a life of dignity even when confronted with difficult circumstances. Towles' ability to craft language in order to transport the reader to a different place and time is astonishing. Even more amazing is his ability challenge the intellect and engage the soul to reach a higher level of human consciousness.
Apologies, in advance, if I have two similar comments that post... I tried to comment earlier and it didn't seem to post. ANYWAY... I am about halfway through this book and thus far I 100% agree with your thoughts. It's a wonderful, charming read. I mean, I've already ordered "Rules of Civility" by Towles because of just how spot-on this book is! I love how intelligent it is, without being "too much". Totally accessible. There are so many quotable insights, sprinkled throughout. Not what I expected at all and am so glad I picked it up! ALSO... I just wanted to say that I LOVE what you're bringing to BookTube. This is the type of video I live for. You always add such insightful thoughts. So glad to have found your channel.
I just finished reading the novel two days ago and I find your review spot-on. Amor was able to blend social, political, historical and psychological aspects all in a beautiful narrative. You can only like Count Alexander; he kept positive even in the darkest hours. All other characters were well introduced and developed. You mentioned that the novel progresses slowly, I have to say very, very, slowly. The friend who lent me the book gave up after 100 pages or so. Poor guy he messed a gem. I highly recommend it. Thank you for the great review.
It was great to hear your thoughts on reading this before the COVID19 lockdowns changed how first-time readers of the book, such as myself, would experience it. Although it’s not a related genre, I’d recommend Susanna Clarke's Piranesi for similar themes (overcoming loneliness/lost purpose and philosophical takes). It took a few pages to adjust to reading Clarke’s writing style (and it helps to know Piranesi is a human for visualising the story in your head), but it’s worth it for a similar reading journey.
I adored this novel. It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read. The Count is such a lovely, dignified character, and someone who does not become bitter in the face of great personal loss. I can’t praise this novel highly enough. Great review. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
Thank you so much for your comment! I'm glad to connect with another appreciator of a great novel! I've actually been craving a re-read soon and if I do I hope to make another review updating my opinion on the novel... see if it's still a favorite :)
Excellent review. I just finished the book and adored it ! Mr. Towles is a very talented writer and stands way above the crowd. His ability to transform the reader to another time and place is beyond compare. I also read “Rules of Civility” and found it to be an equally rewarding and emotional experience. I thought it had a “Great Gatsby” sensibility and may I dare say surpassed Fitzgerald’s aim.
I also read this book and it transports you to the Count's small hotel room and it's like you're living his life in "captivity" with him. I Loved this book and all of the characters, except the guy who got locked somewhere near the end 😅.
It was absolutely fantastic wasn't it? I'm glad to know the audiobook is great. I'd like to re-read this one next year and the audiobook sounds like a great way to revisit it!
Realy you are giving fantastic review i will read this book soon.... You have great communication skill and too beautiful 2 quality in one video realy appreciable😊😊
ive been reading this for like a month and a half and for some reason am only half way through which frustrates me because i am loving this book so much and i wish more people would read it aaaahhhh (ive read other stuff in between lmao im not *that* bad but still)
I know what you mean! It's kind of weird that way! I never felt super compelled to pick the book back up when I was reading it but while reading it I just wanted to live inside the book and never leave! It took me a while to get though too (It's also like 400 pages and decently intellectual writing). Let me know your thoughts when you are done. This is the only book of 2018 that gave me a "book hang over" when I was done I didn't want to read anything else I just wanted to sit inside this book for another month!
You should check out The Romanov Empress by CW Gortner! It shows the changes in the decades leading up to the Russian Revolution from the second to last Tsarina's POV. It takes place over a span of about 60 years and is absolutely amazing!

I'm currently reading this now, the isolation is portrayed romantically.
