@fishbone3333 yeah I legit dont get why it took so long for him. Is it because he missed out on hitting cumulative stat milestones from serving in WW2? Only reason I can think of.
I met him at a Tampa mall during a baseball card show late 80s.. what a pinnacle of true Humanity one of the most humble persons I've ever met in my life when I shook his hand it was like slipping into a baseball glove his hands were as big as baseball gloves I remember the moment of meeting mr. Johnny Mize like it were yesterday
John Robert Mize A Great Payer wether he was at first base or Pinch Hitting He was named by Ted Williams in his list of the best hitters of the game Ted Williams knew what he was talking about the Big Cat or Big Jawn was a tribute to the game and I was very lucky to see him play
An anecdote. My dad in harbor in Leyte was a fleet appointment on the last day of the war--to Annapolis preschool in August 1945. He received orders to go by fastest method of transport to the United States. He had a layover in Honolulu. As he woke up in the barracks a gentleman approached him and said, "Hey, why don't you get up and come have a catch with me?" They went outside with their gloves and a ball and started throwing. Fellow sailors came over and started lining up along their path of the ball. The crowd grew and grew. When the catch was over there was an enormous crowd watching them play catch. My dad walked over and said why are these guys all watching us play catch? Oh sorry, didn't you know? I'm Johnny Mize?
Most underrated player in the history of the game imo.
He should have been voted in by the BBWAA long before his HoF induction in 1981.

He was a great man too. He used to go to the local ballparks and give the kids pointers on how to hit, catch , and run.

Followed him from the Giants to the Yankees. Still one my favorites of all time.
Thomas McKay he was one of my grandfathers favorite too
@@JackCallSports Happy to hear he is remember by baseball fans.
Thomas McKay and a young one!
The Big Cat..
This guy hit HRs as often as he struck out. Incredible all around hitter.
True Hall of Famer, of stastics, ability and character - he's funny too!
Daniel Sienkiewicz
Very underrated power hitter
Definitely deserving of being in the Hall of Fame
WW-2 cost him his 500th home run. Great power hitter who was part of the 5 straight titles in NY from '49-'53.
Great pickup for the Yanks!
@@df5295 he was one of my poppa’s favorites
Mine too
Unbelievably underrated

If Ted Williams says you are one of the best hitters, no matter who you are, you belong in Cooperstown.
The Big Cat should have been elected in his first year of eligibility.
Lost 3 full years in his prime to military service. Kept him from reaching 500 home runs.
Not many would do that today.

Big Jawn
HERE HERE
Mize was perfect proof that the BBWAA has no idea what they are doing. The greatest slugger in the NL of his time and the dumbass writers ignored him.
Ever since they let a convicted drug dealer in, the Baseball HOF has no cache, imo
