DISCHARGING SEWAGE ON A LUXURY SUPER YACHT (Captain's Vlog 111)
HTML-код

- In this Captain's Vlog, we walk you though one of the less fun jobs - showing how to discharge grey and black water (sewage) from a luxury super yacht holding tank. Being careful not to spill a single-drop of waste water into the sea, the tanks are pumped to a specialised, waiting, barge - then taken off to a discharge facility.

When at sea is it ever allowed to dump the sewage into the ocean?
Technically yeah, there is a no dump zone usually anywhere from 3 to about 12-15mi (give it or take) from the coast, close to the coast no, further in yeah. Most big yachts will have some type of treatment before dumping though, so it semi cleaned or completely cleaned, they might even reusethe water, small boats not really, they dump straight to the ocean/sea. Ocean liners and cruise ships have cleaning stations onboard, so essentially for washing your hands face and body and what not you use treated (cleaned and purified) toilet water.

Yes you can dump raw sewage (black water) into the ocean if you are over 12 nautical miles away from land, If you are within this you need a sewage treatment plant to disinfect the sewage before dumping. However Marpol regulations (marine pollution) has some special areas where you have to disinfect if you are in them no matter how far away you are from land the Mediterranean is one of them. Smaller vessels like these yachts will just store it and discharge it when they get to port.
@@chessyp00fs same for food waste, food leftovers, potato peelings etc but not plastic. You are allowed to dump in the sea if > 12 miles from shore, >3 miles if ground leftovers...
does the mooring or marina charges include the black grey water discharge or u have to pay separately?
@@pinkcnc usually you have to pay .........
Thank for letting Aquaholic take a tour on AWOL. Really enjoyed the tour.
Ahhhh the glamorous side of Yachting. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
This is the work I like to see.
The nuts and bolts of big boat operations..
The main job of a captain.
going by the smell in Monaco marina last time I was there, it looks like you are the only boat who does...
Exactly right. I was surprised by the water conditions generally around the coast there. blue water but a lot of plastics floating around.
You’re right Tristan, I did enjoy this tech vid. Thankyou
Love your vlogs. I recently stumbled upon your videos and am sitting in the hotel catching up on them all! Some might say sad existence I have but hey, it is what it is. I am a private jet Captain and find this fascinating. The boss has a 48 m yacht and I spend most of the summer hanging about various parts of she Med while the Boss does whatever one does on a private yacht, fishing etc.......hardly! I worked as a waiter on QE2 last century to finance the pilot license ha ha, my small contribution to merchant seamanship! Great stuff, keep the vlogs coming, nice to learn how things are done on the yacht. We have very little interaction with the yacht crew as they are always busy when we are “off duty” in Nice , Olbia, Bodrum etc.
you should vlog about being a jet captain i would love to watch also you could make a lot of money doing so and i assure you you would have a big following. by the way i am in Fairmount in nothing here but flat land and corn .
Simple genius . And good for environment.
Always good to know how to dispose of waste. You sure don't want that building up for any length of time.
Very interesting... One tends to forget about sewage, but poop is a fact of life. Great video, Captain Tristan.
lmao
Very nice message at the end of the video. There are many ways to help with our oceans health, and this one is on the top of the list. Thank You For Your Help!!
Congratulations on the growth of your Clear Ocean Pact initiative!
Thanks Jason,
Love the educational content. Love the technical content. Thanks for a great video!
and your engineer is amazing
Thoroughly enjoy these how to videos, THANK YOU ‼️. Vinny 🇺🇸
Sometimes ... even shit is interesting 😂
I smell a collaboration with the Drain Addict!
As someone who lives near the fjords this is realy nice thing to see as it is so clean easy yet nessery process to do
Nice to see how you discharge the sewage on the ships. I am a mechanic for the sewage system on Rhein cruises myself. Nice to see the other perspective!
It makes it fun with the wind filter!
Great to see you back doing what for me I find you most enjoying; Talking about all the different facets of AWOL.
Fantastic.
Your command deck looks so much bigger when you are filming than when Nick was filming, do you use a wide angle lens?
Anyway brilliant to see you back. And your numbers are creeping up. I just wish that all people watching your videos would subscribe it's only a click on the bell in the right hand side.
You so deserve it Tristan.
Thank you for show....
Thanks for the video Captain, I asked that question.
I owned a small porto-poty business for events. There is money in sewage !
Really cool video.
Floating barge with AWOLS floaters. Good job doing your part in keeping the ocean clean.
That was informative
8:36 i think its much safe and ok, just take a bucket of water than to tap your hose to sea water.. to make sure there is no grey water spill to the sea.👍
Interesting and thanks for sharing we learning 🇿🇦
Haha! the wind filter made me think about John Bolton's moustache! 😂
Barbara Barbara barbara. Love you vlogs fella please get her in sometime. 😉
Hello love your videos
This was very interesting how systems on the yacht work and processes even if it were justnsewage. Still all these items and systems have to be adressed and its fascinating.
SLAV! The GOAT!!🥇
Tristan - your the man ! It takes way more than just navigating skills to be a yacht captain !! Is there an agency that monitors super yachts and when and where they discharge waste ?
Nice, tight haircut Tristan!
Thank you.🚽👍
Very Good Slav ! I actually like the protective floor coverings both inside and outside. So you ac cumulate 3000 liters daily - that seems like a lot !
it dont think so ...............
Would love to see avid about how you hookup to shour power
I'm the guy that you have seen in the Monaco yacht show. I saw awol today in cannes, it was actually pretty impressive, but you we're not here at that time. Hope to see you again
Definitely a full time job on MY AWOL, won't you have any down time to enjoy the town while docked...you are very busy even when not on charter.
Nice to see treatment, neverseen this in St Raphael !!!!
Since I've not been yachting, yet, I can only speak to what I know, which is draining grey/black water tanks on 5th wheels, we ALWAYS wear gloves. Even tho it's a boat, you are still dealing with sewage outlets & hoses, right? Just a thought:)
i would think the port's would have sewage lines built into the piers. and include that with your docking fee.
Agreed, 🤔
Cool video. Question: do you also record it on a log book?
Thank you for using a clear tube.
Interesting video...can you add the costs of the different services you encounter in port please?
Very interesting. On a chartered cruise, assuming eight guests and a full crew, how many many gallons/liters of gray and black water does AWOL generate in one day?
If the boat is like an RV there are fluid level indicators in the control room.
You watch the levels carefully on every trip.
so 90 gal/6 days grey + 30 gal black, call it 60 gal per person per week. AWOL 6 guests + 7? crew = 15 x 60 = about 900 gal / week... that's about 3500 litres, or the size of AWOL's tank (assuming you mean US gal).
Given Tristan's reply a bit below that they usually only pump 1-2 times a week, that sounds about right.
Oh the glamour of it all, it all smells the same rich or poor, exception of mine obviously heaven scent😂
😂😎
Enjoying the days of your life bud👍
Great video - another mystery solved - thank you! But can I ask - When you are out cruising with guests, how many days capacity do you have in the black/grey water tank? You mentioned when in port, the tank is emptied daily - is that correct - why? You also mentioned you cannot discharge to the sea - while in port. Does that mean you can do it when not in port?
So what ever happen to the"poop" deck?!...Anyway...what is with the cactus in the garage?
Since you’re going to do this daily, do you just leave that hose where it is, or do you have to stow it each time? Who supplies that long hose??
I always thought they would do the black first then the grey to flush the pipes. Guess we learn something new every day.
That's a lot more pumping than my 45L holding tanks on my boat ;)
Thanks Tristan - So do you all keep the discharge hose onboard or does that belong to the pump out barge?
Awsome... I did always wonder how this was done!!! thank you guys. Very Profesional. Is it to difficul to become a Captain???
No Zip Ties on the connection of the hose to the mount?
Great video again even if it's about a load of Cra*p :)
😂
Excellent video. Wondering……how much does is cost to empty the black/grey water tanks like you did on this video?
In Namibia, in one of the you tube channels one ship was dumping its sewage while docked in port.
So I assume when you are doing longer passages where you fill the tanks before getting to a dump location, you can and do dump into the water? Is there a requirement that any treatment, addatives etc are done to the sewage prior or during the open sea dumps? I know they are allowed but I was really surprised that while at shore you have to have the tanks pumped every day. I would have thought there would be enough space for up to a week between dumps possibly, but i guess unlike some RV's Ive had, it looks like your black and gray tanks are combined as one, or possibly seperate tanks that get discharged through a common outlet connector. Still seems as though needing to empty a 3000 liter tank each day is quite a few people taking long showers and there must be a whole bunch of pooping going on too haha. Another great video Tristan, very informative. Keep it up!!
What are the orange mats/covers on your teak decks?
What happens when you are out at sea, where do you discharge it then? It doesn''t look like you can store much onboard.
My superyacht the sewerage works on a a Stern 'hangover' system. ... You hang your bum over the stern of the 7mt boat and let the waves wash you clean. Effective and helps to burley the fish.
Hi Tristan and crew. Very interesting. Can you show us in detail the work shop on board and what kind of things you have had to fabrivate/repair at sea. If you have already, send me the link to the appropriate video. Thanks. Stu from Argentina.
Love the vids, watched them all. Just seen AWOL is for sale. Will this affect what you do?
Well, I've learned that Monaco doesn't allow discharge in their waters. I was under the impression that treated sewage from an approved plant regardless of distance from shore. Do you guys discharge anyway when you are outside the 12-mile zone, providing the other requirements are met?
👍
I have alternate title suggestions for you to review. "Today on SYC we're #1 in the #2 business!
Either that or
"Sh... It happens today on SYC!"
Liking it 😂
Video has been made in Le vieux Port in Cannes :)
It didn't look like anyone was monitoring the connection in case of a leak.
Does the sewage hose stay with AWOL?
Simple but interesting.. thanks Tris
Thank you Tristan great job 👍🏻 yet again mate 👏🏻
Good idea to wear gloves
I like this process, you arrive to your destination and park your yacht and cleaning service arrives. Voila ... the solution. The question, is the service included with the slot or is an extra charge? What about if their is no slot or you just don't want to park it, is their one for only that? Is their an App where you can find all these on board travel points inside the yacht signal?
I heard, once, the word ‘sea’ originally meant septic.
I'm not sure of offshore laws. But why not grind in the tank solids matter in Black tank real fine. Run the Grey water into Black. To help grind the solids. Screen filter that water into grey tank. Add Bio safe Chems to kill off bugs. Dump that water offshore as you go along. It would be fewer Black tank dumps needed. I did hear your comments on dumping around ports. The tanks need to be dump each day? You said? Say you have max. load crew and passengers. How many days does your tank hold? I assume you dumped black water first, then grey. Was wondering last clear water clear. You did use the seawater. Thank you for these vid's. Can you review any ship to ship sharing? Material, food, crew etc.
Given all of the lobster, champagne, caviar & fois gras consumed on a super yacht - that sewage should be of such quality that they pay YOU for it. :)
😂😂🤔🤔
tristan dont sweat details like wind breaker in the vid. it keeps it real
I WAS WONDERING WHAT THAT FURRY CREATURE WAS ON THE TOP OF HIS HEAD...LOL !!!
everyday ?
Do the black and grey water pump out at the same time?
It all goes o the same tank.
love the ostrich on the top part of the screen :-)
Thanks, guys. Where do you get your shorts from? Very smart - add them to the merchandise?
In Namibia, a You Tube channel showed a ship dumping is sewage while docked in Port.
You must have wastewater treatment system, it's possible for this size of yacht
Yes, Slav talks about it in this video. 🤔
They come and pump you out everyday in port? Seems like a lot of work when you've got thousands of gallon of storage.
3500 liters = 924 gallons. Not a lot for a crew of 8. Remember, that's laundry/dish and boat washing water as well.
Cannot call this 'clickbait!'
3 000 liters everyday. What do you on board for that amount of water???
Your dead cat is a sad cat. lolz
They don't put the valves and other things in very convenient places. You'd think flash docks would have sewer hookup pipes under the wharf.
Those were my observations also. I would think that the boat builders and marinas would have a more convenient arrangement to perform this important function.
Fascinating video about something I’d always wondered about... how exactly does one clean the dirty water tank....???
Really interesting process and a great video about something so essential; thanks.
Flush it with seawater
so 80% in 24 hours?... Geez what are you feeding them?.... Just fooling about. Wonderful content as usual. Thank You!
Lot of people on a full Yacht.
Was thinking the same thing. Did the math and that's around 2400 Liters (634 gallons (US)) in 24 hours. Seems like a lot, though I'm sure a majority of that is grey-water rather than black-water.
Mostly shower and laundry, I presume.
JIM
Very surprised at how small the discharge hose is. In Australia my 29 foot long yacht is attached to a two and a half inch diameter hose and vacuumed from shore.
What came out of me this morning would definitely block that pump 😀
Not after it goes thru the macerator.
@@JCrook1028 : ALL HAIL the inventor of the macerator. No one can say that he didn't know sh....it.
Interesting video! How much is the fee to get discharged for 3000l ?
on an airport the little ship is called "honey truck" :D
well may be a drop when you lower the drain hose in the water will escape in the Ocean
Single use plastic Are bore sustainable that's why we use them instead of what Was use before them. Single use plastic in the 1st world nation are not the problem.
Our system pumps into the local sewage pipes. A whopping 16 GPM.
Backwater only. Grey water (dishes, laundry, showers) go overboard.
It is a dirty job, but everyone has to do it. I hope the corporate stooges on the large cruise liners watch this and maybe learn by example. I Support the 'CLEAR OCEAN PACT'🤜🤛
Thanks Andy,
They’ll come everyday now that you are in port? I’m guessing you didn’t mean that?
