This sounds great. I'm just a beginner at violin but I like the less harsh lower cello notes while practicing to get better, so I am currently trying out octave strings on my violin. I did a dodgy comparison video of the sounds. Your instrument sounds a lot more velvety in tone though. (And your playing is far better than mine!) Thanks so much for sharing, this is one of the videos that inspired me to try changing strings.
What you are playing is probably a 16" or 16.5" viola. A tenor violin is the same size as a 1/2 cello, 42", and it's played while sitting, same as a cello. It's tonal range falls between cello and viola.
Actually, the 18 inch tenor violins that were meant to be played on the lap while sitting have wider and flatter fingerboard, this one is definitely set up for the shoulder
It has a beautiful lush sound to it; combining the rich darkness of a Viola played 'nearly' in Cello range.
Very nice sound, so much nicer then normal violin sound. Thanks for the video.
Hi. You have a very rare instrument. The 18 inch tenor violin. I have a 19th century German one. Tunes the same.
What a neat find, and at a flea market no less! Also, I love that tune. It's on the original soundtrack of the Irish film "The Secret of Roan Inish".
6' 7" ... holy giant

There were also made 14 inch tenor violins as well as 16 inch tenor violins but the 18 inch one projects best
I dint even tenor violins existed lol.
Lucky find for a flea market!!!! How long is the instrument. And what are string tunings?

There are some tenors small enough to be played standing up.

200cm man plays deep, thick violin. 🎻 Sounds as chocolaty as I would expect it to. 👅🍫
Yup.
Very smooth
What strings do you use for this?
You order strings by length and specify notes.
