    I am a now retired man who has embarked on a journey:
    When I was five years old I had three goals:
    Build a ship.
    Sail to Tahiti.
    And learn to play many instruments.
    I fell in love with the Lute , Viola da Gamba and Pontian Lyra before I was ten. I did not learn about the Pochette until I was in my twenties.
    I did not know about the theorbo back then.
    I feel I am too old to build an 80 foot sailboat. Much less learn to sail it. Tahiti is no longer the place I had heard about as a kid. But I can still learn to play.
    The only way I can afford to get a theorbo, Viola da Gamba, Pochette, or Pontian Lyra is to learn to build one.
    I have built my contrabass canjo as my first experimental musical instrument. I bought a used Bass amp from the junk store. My canjo sounds great on it. I have tuned to low A. Right now I am waiting for paint to dry, so that I can put a preamp into a wooden box.
    I have bought a violin kit to build a cigar box violin.
    Bas Baa Black sheep sound better everyday, on my canjo and I am working on learning to read music.
    Some of my dreams are old, old but I am happy to say I have found a place in my life where I can start reaching out and doing something about them.
    How do I build on my experience and become luthier? I am reading everything I can lay my hands on. Do you have any Books to recommend? Can you help me find drawings or plans for medieval instruments, particularly those of the violin family.
    I plan on working with mostly traditional hand tools. I love pretty but functional tools and plan to make many of my own tools.
    I feel very alone and lost here in the Panhandle of Texas.
    I will be back

    Hi Kimon,
    I wonder if you would please consider makeing a video on touching-up the varnish on violins? I know you have a video about varnishing new ones, but do you have any techniques for just dealing with scuffs, scratches and small pieces of new inset wood?
    I am an amateur and as a hobby I just fix beaten up old violins to pass them on to children to learn on, so I have to keep my costs low because I do it for free. Any tips you have would be most gratefully received.
    Keep up the excellent videos, and thank you.
    Kind Regards
    Andrew

    • @maestrokimon
      @maestrokimon  3 года назад +1

      Hello Andrew. Thank you for the suggestion. I have tried to make this kind of video in the past but it is very hard to film the varnish. It appears so different in video according to the filming angle and light source that it is almost impossible (for me at least) to make a accurate video. I will keep trying though!

      There are several different pochettes made. The one we had in the museum of the school in Cremona was also different. Unfortunately there are no blueprints for sell.

    Such a cool video!! I have one question - if I know that the overhangs of the plates are not even on an original instrument, should I try to account for this when making the template for my mold? Or would the difference of 1-2mm not have significant impact on the sound of the finished instrument?

    • @maestrokimon
      @maestrokimon  3 года назад +3

      Thank you!
      If the outline of the instruments is damaged and isn't overlapping evenly you could use the purfling as reference. In any case I don't expect it to influence the sound.

  • @simonecamplani2430

    What if the center joint of the back is slighltly angled? If the luthier put the two billets in the vise and planed those toghether it could be that the two pieces match without being truly on the centerline
    Just curious to know if what i say its possible

    • @maestrokimon
      @maestrokimon  3 года назад

      That is indeed possible. You can plain them together but will always have to control if they are stil 90 degrees. if not the centerline will not be a line but a curve as the error becomes bigger with the arching going higher!
